20080322 Flavor Change

Thekooks 11:46, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Suggestion type
Flavor Change

Suggestion scope
Everyone, mainly new players.

Suggestion description

Currently on the www.urbandead.com main page the breif description of the game reads as follows;

In death, the city stirs. Its borders still locked down after a sudden government quarantine two years ago, Malton's trapped civilians make their way through the derelict buildings, surviving the changing seasons to rebuild their fragmented society from the rubble upwards. Military cleanup squads patrol the empty streets, stationed in the city for the long haul, while embedded scientific groups continue the experiments that brought them here.

And the dead rise up and thrive, trailing through the ruined streets of the city, milling between buildings and clawing through makeshift barricades and diversions, reclaiming the city as their own.

This does not mention pkers, which leads to many new players becoming angry and confused when they are PK'd. I suggest that front page text be added to include a sentance or two about PK'ers. As an example the new text would read like this:

In death, the city stirs. Its borders still locked down after a sudden government quarantine two years ago, Malton's trapped civilians make their way through the derelict buildings, surviving the changing seasons to rebuild their fragmented society from the rubble upwards. Military cleanup squads patrol the empty streets, stationed in the city for the long haul, while embedded scientific groups continue the experiments that brought them here.

And the dead rise up and thrive, trailing through the ruined streets of the city, milling between buildings and clawing through makeshift barricades and diversions, reclaiming the city as their own.

Some survivors have become insane at the horrors they have seen in Malton, choosing not to fight the dead they roam Malton looking for weak survivors to murder.

This will prepare new players for the game better.

  3. If a PKer kill a low level newbie, then shame, shame, shame on them. Me, being a PKer, usually don't kill anyone lower then Lv10. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 13:13, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

  11. Keep As Cheeseman and Rosslessness... again :) --  17:43, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
  12. Weak Keep - not always true (IE PKers only go after low levels, PKers choose not to fight the dead) but whatever... Basically as Cheeseman, different wording--/~Rakuen~\Talk Domo.gif I Still Love Grim 17:59, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
  13. Change - the wording. --Heretic144 18:22, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

  17. Keep - A bit different wording would be nice, but still a good idea. --ZsL 02:45, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
  18. Keep - Hmmm...I like it.--Jamie Cantwell3 02:47, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
  19. Keep - The wording will have to change, but I like the concept. I remember when I was PKed as a newbie without any idea what was going on... =[--KF 03:53, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
  20. Keep/Change - Great idea... but the flavour text given is not good. I'd suggest something more like, "... and amidst the chaos of the zombie outbreak, some survivors have taken to murdering their own..." simple and neutral...--WanYao 09:10, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
  21. Keep - Good idea. I tried to make a friend join the game and he got killed only minutes after he'd joined, and he was like '???'. - SadYear 09:49, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
  22. Keep - definitely needs some kinda warning that survivors may well murder you too. --Karloth Vois RR 13:26, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
  23. Change the wording so that it doesn't insult our profession! But I agree, this is crucial. --BoboTalkClown 16:03, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
  24. Keep - Because I love advertising murder. --Trav 16:58, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
  25. Keep - The wording is kinda corny, but I'm sure Kevan can come up with something else. --Hhal 17:38, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
  26. Keep - I'm sure kevan can work something out. but the idea is solid.--'BPTmz 17:43, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
  27. Keep - but, instead of mentioning insanity, I'd focus on the disorder and lawlessness of the situation - not sure how to phrase that, but there must be some way to point out that violence doesn't just involve zombies. TastyNougat 19:25, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
  28. Keep - Like others im not sure i like the flavour text that much though.--Carnexhat 19:51, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
  29. Keep - Agreed that the wording needs work. Newbies should be aware that there isn't "sides" to this game. Just because another player is breathing doesn't make him your buddy. --FrozenFlame 04:22, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
  30. Keep Survivors are weak. ----Secruss|Yak|Brahnz!|CGR|PKA|800px-Flag of the United States.svg.png|EMLN|Templates|RRF|RFTM|Crap|WHOZ|Evil3.gif|MU|GN|C2008|Chippy.gif|19:09, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
  31. Keep - Whatever. Not as if it makes much of a difference anyway. --LH779 13:09, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
  32. Change - Uh, I don't mind, as the others have mentioned, but there has to be a better wording for it. ~AriedartinTalkA KS J abt all 17:57, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
  33. Keep - POWER TO THE PKER --Akule School's in session. 21:46, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
  34. Keep/Change - maybe better to make it in the page right after a character is created. --RayHanley 12:23, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
  35. Keep - When I started playing UD, I remember thinking that PKing was akin to driving round the track backwards in an online racing game - PKers were (in my view) breaking an unofficial rule of the game just to annoy others. A line in the start-up text could have changed that, showing me that PKers were a legitimate, deliberate inclusion in the game. --Toejam 20:05, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
  36. Keep/Change - Agreed, something like this should be added. A few quick things though, first, what about zombie pk-ers? They exist, and not all newbies play survivors. Also, a tweak in the specific flavor would be nice, as mentioned earlier. --Nathan Blackwell 20:19, 30 March 2008 (BST)
  37. Keep Definatly, new players should know that their breathing companians might turn on them! --Asdfgjkl 02:48, 1 April 2008 (BST)
  38. Keepbut put the Pker bit above the zombie bit. They are survivors of a sort after all...--TerminalFailure 03:06, 1 April 2008 (BST)
  39. Keep/Change - I support it overall, but the sentence should eb a bit different. I'm sure Kevin will get it right when he reads about it in Peer Reviewed.--Kolechovski 20:30, 1 April 2008 (BST)

Kill Votes

  1. Change the wording and it should not be a separate sentence, rather part of the context --~~~~ [talk] 20:42, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
  2. Kill - As Funt Solo said, but I dont like voting spam. PKing is not meant to be a key focus of the game. There are also death cultists, GKers, life cultists, dual nature players, etc. The point of the opening text is simply to cover the main focus of the game: survivors battling against zombies.--Dr Doom86Phoenix2.gif T PSS 02:53, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
  3. Kill - As Wan Yao and Duke - Headshot Hal Talk +1 Casting Call 02:25, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
  4. Kill - As Funt. --PdeqTalk* 20:11, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
  5. Change Not all PKers target just weak survivors, I say change the wording --MikhailTalkJournalGroup
  6. Kill - This would spawn more PKers. As a new player, I never even considered the possiblility of being attacked or attacking a survivor. Sure some may be mad if it happens but I think it would cause more harm than good, as people would read this and a number will choose "madman" to play instead of zombie or survivor. --User:Vazzaroth 8:00 23 March 2008 (UTC)
  7. Kill - As vazzaroth --Vault 15:07, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
  8. Kill There are many ways to play Urban Dead other than the main focus, which is zombie vs survivor conflict. I don't think PKing deserves special note in the description. If so we might as well add a line, "Many survivors are clinging to their love of fine art to get them through these dark times and are looting museums for decorations to bestow on buildings across the city" or "Some zombies have become sexually frustrated and desperately request Gangbangs and for people to Grab Manbagz" --Jon Pyre 16:27, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
  9. Kill - Don't justify people playing contrary to the theme of the game. --Pgunn 20:50, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
  10. Kill - PKing isn't a key focus of the game, just an unfortunate side effect--CorndogheroT-S-Z 17:57, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
  11. Kill - I don't think anyone's mentioned yet that pk'ing weak players is awesome. --Vandurn 17:21, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
  12. Kill - As Dr Doom86, vazzaroth and Jon Pyre. Vandurn, you're now awesome! -- The Lethal Trio [Tlk|NTCS|RRF] U! E! 22:18, 4 April 2008 (BST)
  13. Kill - Utterly needless. Let new players find out on their own about PKers.--Luke Skywalker 13:32, 5 April 2008 (BST)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Spam - there are many motivations for PKing, which anyway is punished with half XP. It's clear that it's not the intended key focus of the game. --Funt Solo QT Scotland flag.JPG 15:20, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
    How so?--Thekooks 16:25, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
Uhm, read what I said: "punished with half XP". --Funt Solo QT Scotland flag.JPG 17:24, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
Discussion moved to discussion. --Funt Solo QT Scotland flag.JPG 17:34, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
  2. Spam - It's absurd to think that people only murder because they are insane. -- Iscariot 23:42, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
  3. Spam - Funt's a bit wrong but he's right in an overly vague way. Pking does not give half xp as a way to discourage it so much as it gives half xp as a way to encourage interacting with zombies, as a few other early updates, If pking didn't give half xp it would be preferable to actually having any zombie involvement. So, basically, don't encourage Pking because the more Pking is encouraged the more Zombie interaction is discouraged.--Karekmaps?! 09:53, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
  4. Spam - I hate voting Spam, but seriously, who the hell is complaining about getting PKed as a newbie? Why is it necessary to specifically mention it? This just seems like tilting at windmills, to me. --Diano 23:38, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
