Suggestion scope
Survivors (and PKers and Death Cultists)
Suggestion description
Maybe I've watched Lethal Weapon 2 too many times (Where Lt. Murtock kills his would-be assassin in his garage with his nailgun), or maybe it was a game I played called Escape from Hell where a nailgun was one of the weapons you could use against the dead, or maybe I've watched a truly horrible horror thriller movie called Nail Gun Massacre once (yes it's a real movie) ... but I think Nail guns would be an awesome improvisational weapon for a zombie genre game.

Nailgunmassacre.jpg

Nail guns would be found in Hardware Stores only. Nail guns are designed to not take individual nails, they take nail clips, which come in bunches of 15. Nail guns found in Malton Hardware stores are the cordless consumer-type: direct drive, powder actuated nailguns - not the type that use a pressurized air hose or the type that use electromagnetism (battery-powered ones). That is to say, the nailgun essentially uses gunpowder charges to propel the nail in a manner similar to that of an actual gun propelling a bullet.

Nail guns -are- deadly.... most of them are sold with instructions to take the same precautions with a nail gun that you would with a firearm. There is even proposed legislation to make them require the same sort of background check, due to the fact that the most widely-used nailguns are so similar to normal firearms.

As proof, there is a CDC report which states: In the United States alone , about 37,000 people every year go to emergency rooms with serious injuries from nail guns, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Forty percent of those injuries occur to consumers. Nail gun injuries have tripled from 1991 to 2005. [1]

Below I have included images of 4 types of nailguns from a national hardware store, which also sells them on the internet. Each of these nailguns are direct-drive, powder-actuated nailguns. They do not use tubes, air cannisters, hoses or batteries. I've also included a picture of a common type of nail gun clip.

The nailgun fills a niche which is currently empty. Currently there is a Flare gun (VERY high damage, low accuracy, one use), a shotgun (High damage, potentially high accuracy, low capacity), and a pistol (moderate damage, potentially high accuracy, moderate capacity). Nail gun would come under Low damage, potentially moderate accuracy, high capacity)

In addition, because a nailgun fires nails instead of bullets, it does something which normal bullets can't do. Because it's essentially a less powerful version of a flechette round, it goes through the kevlar netting of a flak jacket without having the inertia displaced (flak jackets work on the principle of kevlar netting which evenly distributes the force of a rounded projectile like a bullet or shell, which is why something made from essentially a type of strong fabric can stop a bullet) - just like shooting an arrow or a flechette round, or stabbing with a knife would go through a flak jacket. Also, since the code for flak jackets only work for weapons which do 5 or more damage anyway, there does not need to be any sort of change to flak jacket code to implement this tool/weapon.

Benefits:

  • High ammo capacity
  • Ignores Flak Jackets
  • Gives additional help to survivors in a mall siege
  • Makes Hardware Stores more useful
  • Good flavor for a zombie setting where survivors would need improvisational weapons
  • Gives consumers a random chance to start with a weapon which does not suck.
  • It fills a niche of a high capacity, low damage, moderate accuracy firearm type.
  • Because it's found in hardware stores, it doesn't dilute search rates from gun shops, armories and police departments for pistols and shotguns.

Detriments:

  • Low damage per nail
  • Does not work on barracades (Nails can not break down a barracade)
  • Only found in Hardware stores and as a 'random' improv weapon for consumers, so unless you start with it randomly and find the clips in a junkyard, you'll need free running to get a restock on ammo and the nailgun itself.
  • It's a new weapon that can be used, and there are people who vote no on any new weapon.

Stats:
------

  • Damage: 3
  • Capacity: 15 (see picture - nail guns do not take individual nails)
  • Accuracy: 5%, 30%, 55% - Nail Guns are similar to pistols, but different. No matter how similar they are to a firearm, they are still going to be less accurate. No amount of training is going to make a nailgun as accurate as a pistol. Therefore, you can't use the same 'advanced pistol techniques' on a nailgun that you could on a normal pistol
  • Encumberance - Nail Gun: 5% (slightly more cumbersome than a pistol)
  • Encumberance - Nail Clip: 2% (bigger than pistol clip, but also lighter - it balances out)
  • Found: Hardware Stores (4% for nailgun, 6% for nail clip), Junkyards (1%? for either), Nail Gun can also be one of the improvisational weapons which Consumers start with (one loaded nailgun, no extra nail clips)
  • Special: Because of how flak jacket code works on UD (only effective on weapons which do 5 or more damage), and because nails fired from nail guns are a smaller, weaker version of a flechette round, they bypass flak jackets.

Questions and Answers
Q: Aren't nailguns less accurate than pistols?
A: Yes, they are. Which is why they have a cap of 55%, instead of 65%. But there are also 37,000 injuries per year in the US alone from nailguns, including many head injuries. So while less accurate, they are accurate enough to be a good makeshift weapon.

Q: Do nailguns uses hoses and cords?
A: Some do. Some don't. Cordless ones do not use hoses or cords. They use 2 types of propellants - the less common ones use small air cannister method and the more common ones (also more powerful ones) use an explosive powder-actuated method. In other words, a form of gunpowder. These are the more common nailguns used in the world. Treating them like power drills which use AC and batteries would be like treating your pistol like it's a laser. Also, there are two types of powder-accuated nailguns. Direct Drive and Indirect Drive. Indirect Drive are the safer ones. They are lower velocity and do not use the explosion on the nail itself. They are also very recent. Malton's been in quarantine for quite a while now and has the more popular, more widely used DIRECT DRIVE powder accuated nailguns, which are high velocity and act by causing an explosive charge behind the nail itself, much like a gun does to a bullet.

Q: Look I know how to use a nailgun and you are supposed to push it up against the thing you're nailing, not fire it like a gun!
A: Correct. Because if you fire it like a gun, the nail can hit someone and potentially kill them. Which, in Malton, is the general reason for using it as a weapon. People are going to be using them in a definitely unsafe manner because they're not using them to fix their drywall, they're using them to kill zombies (or in the case of PKers, kill their fellow humans).

Q: Nails aren't supposed to be used as bullets - they won't fly like bullets!
A: Actually, they do fly as bullets. In fact there is a type of bullet called a flechette round which has been used since World War 1 to get through armor. Essentially, it's a long nail, modified to be shot out of firearms. And -all- explosive powder-accuated nailguns and also many non-explosive-based nailguns, have warning labels on them saying that they need to be treated with the same safety precaution that you would treat firearms.

Q: How big are nailguns?
A: Depends on the type. The cordless ones are not very big. Slightly bigger than a pistol, and slightly heavier as well. Since the only nailguns which would be useful in Malton as weapons would be the cordless, direct-drive powder accuated ones, Malton citizens are quite fortunate that they're also the most portable ones.

  5. Very Weak Keep - I will vote KEEP because this is well thought out, balanced and DOES in fact fill a niche. It is "very weak", though, because a) it's a little out of genre... though i can see it as a makeshift weapon and b) because I see getting close enough to a zombie to really make it effective being a little dodgy... --WanYao 20:27, 5 May 2008 (BST)

  10. Keep - How is this out of genre? It's in a hardware store. I know where multiple hardware stores are in relation to my home but I would be hard pressed to find a gun store or a fort. Even if you couldn't shoot it like a gun (although you can) this would still make a good melee weapon. And you wouldn't even have to swing it. --Some1neelse 00:51, 6 May 2008 (BST)

  15. Keep - It will be amusing seeing a headshot with this. --Pvt human 05:48, 6 May 2008 (BST)
  16. Keep - If you can get close enough to a zombie to stab it with a knife or hit it with an axe, you can get close enough to shoot it with a nailgun.--  ZZ Argh.gifEmot-zombie.gif 07:11, 6 May 2008 (BST)
  17. Keep - Nail guns would make pretty crappy weapons, but they'd do in an emergency. I have heard of nailguns being used like firearms as a laugth (I've also heard of people going to hospital with a nail through their foot) and apparently they're very innacurate. I've looked at the stats and they seem to add up ok. Go for it.--SeventythreeTalk 07:47, 6 May 2008 (BST)
  18. keep As far as I am concerned makeshift weapons are more in genre than shotguns. In any event I think it would be fun to "nail" a zed and it is the purpose of a game after all.--Honestmistake 09:46, 6 May 2008 (BST)
  19. Keep - Seems to balance fine, but it'd be better as a weapon that can fare better than a pistol against armoured targets, but worse than a pistol against a bare target. ~AriedartinTalkA KS J abt all 15:36, 6 May 2008 (BST)
  20. Keep - For once, a new weapon suggestion seems to be balanced. It isn't a multi-target grenade or flamethrower, it isn't a long-range X-ray sniper rifle, it isn't a crappy antique bolt-action rifle, it's a nailgun. To be honest, I'm surprised this wasn't in the game from the start. Would your average person, in the event of a zombie breakout, run through the streets to the nearest gun store and dig around for a shotgun which they've never even held before? Or would they first grab their nailgun and nail some zeds? - Leeksoup 16:37, 6 May 2008 (BST)
  21. Keep - I like it. Something different for a change and nicely balanced too. -- Cheese 23:32, 6 May 2008 (BST)

  25. Keep - I like x2! --Hhal 00:28, 8 May 2008 (BST)
  26. Keep - The movie sucked. The game was awesome. That cancels each other out. So I vote keep because if I see a hot zombie chick, I want to be able to tell people I nailed her good. --Barton 17:45, 9 May 2008 (BST)
  27. It took me a while to come around to this one, but I've decided like it because it provides a semi-viable alternative to (normal) guns or HtH weapons for certain people. As such, it would add decent flavor to the game, but not be so wildly common that its not the novelty attack it should be in cinematic terms. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 18:32, 9 May 2008 (BST)
  28. keep - The keep votes make sense, the kill votes don't - most of the kill votes, like Jamie Cantwell says, seem like they said 'oh noes, another weapon, kill' because they sure didn't read the suggestion if they say this would not be accurate --Katsman 23:01, 11 May 2008 (BST)
  29. Keep- Like the idea. --BKM 10:23, 12 May 2008 (BST)

  32. KEEP -In response to Gardenator, I am a contractor, so i've used several nailguns. I don't think you have though. The author's talking about nailguns that use gunpowder, not air, so you didn't even bother to read the suggestion - you just voted kill without reading. Voting keep because I actually read it and it's well thought out and balanced. - Signed by Ed Begly 16:05, 13 May 2008 (BST)
Did you actually read past the first sentence in my vote? It reads - "Framing/Roofing nailers require a air compressor to fire. There are "cordless" finishing nailers out there, but they shoot little thin nails." So my argument was that since the OP put in how realistic it was to have a nailgun as a weapon, a finishing nailgun is not much of a weapon. --User:Gardenator/sig 00:00, 15 May 2008 (BST) - Non Author Re --Tselita 19:12, 15 May 2008 (BST)

  33. Keep - Much better suggestion. Stick to non-conventional weapons, better suggestion than your Tumbler slug one. And just found an additional reason to vote for this - I noticed that half of the kill votes on both of your suggestions come from The Dead (aka griefing idiots) - if they hate it (or hate the author) I have to give it the benefit of the doubt. 38. Keep - Would be interesting. I think 15 per clip is a bit high (maybe 10?), as long as its not just better than the fire axe (without any disadvantages), it could work. No-genius 15:06, 14 May 2008 (BST)
I went on youtube, saw the video of the nailgun massacre movie. It was gross and disgusting and I turned it off when the guy shot him in the crotch, but zombie fighting is also supposed to be gross and disgusting so this fits. 40. Keep - You know, my cousin once shot a nail through his finger, so it can happen. I wouldn't bother with the firearms stuff though - I'd just walk right up to the zombie or human and shoot them point blank. If I can do it with a knife, I can do it with this. Oh yeah...... the streak continues --Zaphod Beeblebrox 19:03, 14 May 2008 (BST)

  45. Keep - Seriously, does anyone read suggestion rules anymore (about voting)? I'm pretty sure it said you're not judging the REALISM of the suggestion, but how it would be in the game. This is good, because just about every other makeshift weapon sucks. And this is well balanced, thought over, and another stupid suggestion... --ToastrlordT TSA 21:37, 15 May 2008 (BST)
  46. Keep - As above, totally. Why would anyone argue realism for a weapon, when this is a game about zombies that come to life and eat brains, but can also talk about bananas and gang banging? And if you stick them with a needle they become people again? This is definitely well balanced, the person clearly thought it over, and who wouldn't want to take a nailgun and go firing it around like a crazy person? Air compressor, gunpowder, how far does it shoot, who cares ... I don't care if it runs on vespine gas and puppy kisses. It's a great idea for a weapon. --AshLaw 21:58, 15 May 2008 (BST)

  55. Keep - Balanced and interesting. --Leon Vulcan 16:50, 17 May 2008 (BST)
  56. Keep - This definitely isn't much of a survivor buff, as the efficiency is not much better than a fireaxe. I personally like the flavor: Even if the idea of a zombie being stopped by nail gun body shots isn't realistic, the idea of headshots with a nailgun is definitely right out of a zombie movie. Maybe some additional changes would make the idea even cooler, like something representing the ability to use the nailgun in its intended capacity as a construction tool. I don't think the damage should go up, and I don't figure the accuracy should be any more than 50% when maxed: shooting zombies probably makes your hand shakier than shooting cans which are just 10 or 15 feet away. This idea seems fun, won't really disrupt game mechanics, and is highly unlikely to upset the balance between zombies and survivors, so I'm not really sure why so many people are so violently naysaying it. Guess I will never quite understand the UD community. I mean we already have pool cues, golf clubs, and fencing foils... --Pac8s 17:20 17 May 2008 (BST)
  57. keep-4 damage would be nice. Balanced. Could be a consumer starting weapon (or maybe THE weapon). I want my nailgun. 'Nuff Said. Enough sentence fragments.--Rofl. 22:54, 17 May 2008 (BST)
Keep - I'm fine with the damage and everything else. Using construction would be great, but I like the idea that it does around a knife's accuracy or a little better. If you can get close enough to stab, you can definitely get close enough to make this accurate and deadly. And I will never understand the UD community either. heh I just noticed Im vote 69. --I am Iron Man 06:38, 18 May 2008 (BST) - Sock. -- Cheese 01:13, 19 May 2008 (BST)

  59. Keep But they should be found in warehouses, too. Due to their low damage/high capacity, they'd probably be less-preferred then pistols and/or shotguns, but at times when the local mall is down, and the PDs are non-operational, it would make them significantly more useful to be found in secondary resource buildings such as warehouses. I also like the suggestion of using them for construction. Say, perhaps, that if you roll a fail on your barricade attempt, you'd get one auto-retry, which would use up a random number of nails from the loaded nailgun on the top of your stack (maybe even the whole clip, of you're unlucky). --Morgan Blair 17:31, 18 May 2008 (BST)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - "the equivalent force of a .22 caliber bullett" HAHAHAHAAAA! A .22 is a peashooter, hon. Not the kind of man stopping power you'd need in a service weapon, let alone a zombie apocalypse. • Re - Here's a government website on construction tool safety - please particularly check the part dealing with powder-actuated nailguns, which says "The nail comes out of the gun with the equivalent. force of a .22 caliber bullet". [2] As for video games notwithstanding, I also included 2 movies (Lethal Weapon 2 - an action movie - and Nail Gun Massacre - a horror movie), and a CDC report on the amount of serious injuries and hospitalizations each year from nail guns (37000 in the US alone) --Tselita 18:05, 5 May 2008 (BST)
      • It's still not a good weapon - just because accidents can happen with it does not make it practical to run around killing people. Bullets are aerodynamic for a reason, and they are much denser than nails. Try looking up the statistics for deaths caused by nailguns. --Pgunn 20:07, 5 May 2008 (BST)

    • Re - I've made a counter suggestion I invite anyone interested to check out and chip in on. Basically, I think the nail gun as written isn't going to be used because it advances on the same skill track as the handgun. 7. Kill - Eh, maybe in genre, people use improvised weapons in zombie apocalypses all the time. Still, a nail gun makes a very poor weapon, I'd be better off hacking a zombie's face with a hatchet. 22. Kill What's the point of this? Nails from nailguns would do nothing to something that doesn't feel pain (like ZOMBIES! Weird huh?). Oh here's and idea!: Persons shot with 25 or more nails gain NAIL ARMOR. Nail armor does reflexive damage to anyone punching, biting, or clawing the person, in addition, you gain 1 point of damage reduction. Suggest this 1000 times like this played-out nailgun idea. 24. Kill - Has anyone here used a nail gun? Framing/Roofing nailers require a air compressor to fire. There are "cordless" finishing nailers out there, but they shoot little thin nails. Shooting a zombie with 30 nails would only cause flesh wounds. Don't believe me? Go out to a shooting range with a pistol, shotgun, and a finishing nailer. Shoot something big like a watermelon wrapped in leather and tell me how strong a nail gun is. --Emot-siren.gif LABIA on the INTERNET Emot-siren.gif Dunell Hills Corpseman The Malton Globetrotters#24 - You rated this wiki '1'! • Not sure what the point is of my Re'ing anyone with this sig, but whatever. 1) it's a powder-actuated nailgun, not an air compressor nailgun. 2) I included multiple Re's with links to youtube videos of nailgun injuries where the nail does embed deeply into the person, including right into the heart. Not a flesh wound. The nails shoot out with the force of a .22 calibre bullet. I didn't make this up - it's from the US Government Construction Safety Report. 3) The powder actuated nailguns do not shoot 'thin nails' I included a picture of a nail clip which I guess you didn't bother to look at, since you were too anxious to vote kill on my suggestion. What you're doing is like trying to say pistols should not be allowed in UD because bb-guns use air compressors to fire weak bb's. It's apples and oranges and you really should read the suggestion before you vote on it - Jamie was right. --Tselita 16:23, 13 May 2008 (BST)
You know I've read some of your edits and I'm kinda surprised you will go that route. My real life part time job involves selling nail guns at a hardware store. There are two types of "cordless" nail guns. Powder actuated or electric. The newer electric nail guns shoot at a very fast rate (as opposed to earlier versions which had to wind up a spring which took several seconds), while the powder actuated ones require fuel cells. Regardless, they are all considered finishing nailers as opposed to roofing or framing nailers. Can you guess which ones drive larger nails? Ok go and google "nail gun lethality", the second link(the first one being this page) is http://www.safetyline.wa.gov.au/pagebin/mechhazd0008.htm which says "A nailing machine was being used to attach structural members to a timber building frame with steel connector plates, when the carpenter positioned the tool awkwardly. A nail ricocheted from the steel plate and penetrated to its full depth in his assistant's head. The assistant recovered." But I digress.
