Suggestion description
To say it up front, this suggestion is not designed to stop intentional zerging, nor should it help zergers know when they've been found out. Read on for why that is.

Many Urban Dead players have multiple characters (alts). The rule regarding alts is simple, but many players still find that their characters get too close to one another sometimes. Even veteran players have this problem on occasion. This suggestion is aimed at helping honest players keep their characters apart.

  • Proposal - A proximity warning whenever characters with the same e-mail address are within 10 blocks of each other, as well as requiring confirmation for e-mail address changes (explained later). Similar in appearance to the IP warning, if a character moves within 10 blocks of another character with the same e-mail, they would receive a simple warning, perhaps like, You are X blocks away from CHARACTER_NAME, another character with your e-mail address. Please mind the rules. As long as the characters are within 10 blocks of each other, the warning would be displayed.
  • Why e-mail? - If the actual zerging detection mechanisms (e.g. cookies, IP addresses, etc.) were used, zergers could learn the limits of them and circumvent them more easily. By using e-mail, no information about the actual mechanisms is given away, and the proximity warning becomes an opt-in tool for honest players to identify when they're close to making an accidental mistake.
  • Why confirmation? - Without it, griefers could enter the e-mail address of their target, then find out whenever they were in proximity. It would essentially act as a radar system, and could potentially have some other drawbacks as well. Confirmations ensure that only people who own an e-mail address can use it.

Please note that the existing countermeasures will remain as they are. This suggestion does not modify, remove, or otherwise alter them.

  11. Keep - Sure why not. I guess the stupid and lazy need a way to keep their damn characters apart, since they can't just use their fuckin BRAIN and do it themselves.-- | T | BALLS! | 08:58 20 December 2009(BST)

  18. Keep - Very helpful for newer players and the occasional oopsies for seasoned. Gently reminding new players of proximity infractions while learning the game would be a very useful tool they could be encouraged to use. A small information page could easily be created explaining how it works and how to use it with that link added beside the existing ones "See also Alt Account, Alt abuse, Zerging & Alt Proximity Alerts" in the Frequently Asked Questions/Alts area.--AU10Pantomime Mistress of Pain┌∩┐()┌∩┐ 02:37, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
  19. Keep - 'There is no way anybody who cares about the rules should ever be that close'... it's all about raising awareness of said rules. Dumping it in settings might make people more aware. As long as it's an opt-in via email reply - IE, for it to activate one has to respond to an email sent to the address in question, so a griefer can't sign up a new character using someone else's email and use it to track them - there's no good reason not to. - M arcusF ilby T 04:23, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
  20. Keep - This may be useful for tracking the locations of long inactive characters without activating them and risking tripping the anti-zerging countermeasures. --Anotherpongo 10:31, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
  21. Keep - Has the potential to be very useful. --Met Fan F 00:31, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

  23. Keep - Good idea, quite useful for people making a legimate mistake.--The General T Sys U! P! F! 10:46, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
  24. Keep - Though I agree with Marcus that there would have to be some sort of opt-in via email to avoid abuse of the feature. --Lois talk 10MFH 13:05, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
  25. Keep - I have recently seen how hard it can be at times to keep my alts away from each other, especially when one spawns a suburb away from another and half of Malton is destroyed. I like keeping my alts away from each other and this would help me in doing so. --No one ever pays Rufus in gum! 23:43, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
  26. Keep - I can't tell you how many times I've forgotten where one of my less-active alts is. Speaking of which, I should go look in on my rotter... --sannok(talk)(kilts) 23:49, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
  27. Keep Its the darndest thing, a few days ago I participated in the ransacking of the Krinks Power Station, and walked outside so I could hear the groans for tomorrow. I logged in on my alt account, and a feeding groan led me to a fire station. I was mortified to notice that I was right next to the Krinks power station. This feature would easily be handy. Verance 03:36, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
  28. Keep - Sure. Fuckin lol'd at Verance's comment though. -- Adward  17:49, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

  30. Keep - Personally, I think this is a great idea--Supercharazard 11:48, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
  31. Keep - Pretty useful, especially as I have several mobile alts who like to wander at random, and have already accidentally ended up darn close to each other. --Spiderzed 17:45, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
  32. Keep -Sounds good for noobs. Otherwise doesnt fix zerging, so not a big deal.--Supercohboy 06:50, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - I actually think it is a great idea in principle; but there is no way anybody who cares about the rules should EVER be that close to one of their alts. Thus the intentional zergers would likely be the only ones seeing the warning. However, a well thought out and presented argument Aichon, just can't give you my vote. --YoEleven 02:54, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
  2. Kill - I like the idea but not sure its needed, I mean if you dont know that your alts are near each other.....but I must say a good read and balanced article.--C Whitty 12:17, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
