I first thought about merging the whole crates article with this, but i changed my mind as it has a lot of unrelated here info. Hope the way i wrote about it here is better --~~~~T''' 13:58, 30 August 2007 (BST)

This is very different than crates... You did right, IMO. The articles should cross-reference each other, but be seperate. --WanYao 07:15, 31 August 2007 (BST)

Military Report Archive

I've put some wiki-code into the Report Archive. Each month now has its own subpage, and a new page needs to be created each month. I made a handy template to throw at the top of each page, as well, so all the pages can be edited the same. To create a new month, copy what you see on the report archive page in the code, click the "create it" link, paste the code, and move the reports in. Simple, no?

I figure it's easier to get it set-up now, when there aren't that many reports to categorize, than later, when there might have been months to sift through. This also lets you find the right year, month, and day quickly. Is there anything I might need to work on?

Looks excellent and handy, thanks. However, why you disabled edit buttons everywhere? --~~~~ [Talk] 13:14, 10 September 2007 (BST)

Military Reports and suburb ratings

Could they perhaps replace or at least enhance the suburb ratings system? --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 04:09, 31 August 2007 (BST)

Mabey, but there is also the consideration that there would be lots of things that would be lost if such a change ever happened, Identity of who is doing what is one thing.--Karekmaps?! 05:02, 31 August 2007 (BST)
Choppers also can't tell how many are inside buildings... --Sonny Corleone RRF DORIS CRF pr0n 05:11, 31 August 2007 (BST)
Actually they seem to be able to provide rough estimates at times.--Karekmaps?! 05:21, 31 August 2007 (BST)
do we know for sure they cant see inside of buildings? i know it wouldnt make sense but you never know...--'BPTmz 16:38, 31 August 2007 (BST)

Does anyone else appreciate how useful this potentially is for survivors? It's not game-breaking, but its in-game usefulness is certainly more than "small"... And I mean to more than just suburb ratings... --WanYao 07:12, 31 August 2007 (BST)

Hell yes, this gives us unbiased reports. Sure it does not count the number of people in buildings, but it does tell us the general shape of a suburb, and the amount of zeds hanging around. Since ruin, it's probably a better indicator of the state of a suburb than the amount of survivors or zeds anyways. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 02:13, 1 September 2007 (BST)
Well, the information is a bit vague in a way. It gives zed data and just a little bit about buildings and survivors. Unless I am interpreting it wrong... but I don't think I am. But it's still useful, very useful... I think that every suburb should now have a seperate section in the wiki for recent external military status reports... Probably right before the news would be the best place for it. --WanYao 06:29, 1 September 2007 (BST)

Now that the military reports are being posted on the page, I think they should be wiped once a week. No need to archive - so what? --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 13:44, 1 September 2007 (BST)

Why no need for archive? There'll be an archive. Keeping here only 1 week worth of reports sounds fine for me --~~~~T''' 13:48, 1 September 2007 (BST)
Give me a reason to keep the reports then? The suburb page does not keep reports. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 14:32, 1 September 2007 (BST)
History. The fact that suburb page doesn't keep it doesn't mean it shouldn't be kept. Anyway, if you insist - i could deal with them being deleted --~~~~T''' 14:43, 1 September 2007 (BST)
Well, the list is going to get very long, I expect. And out of date... But keeping a history seems prudent... Ideally, I would like to see these reports put up on the individual suburb pages that they apply to, but I think that'll wait until more figure out what the radio update does... Not to spoil the "fun', etc. My opinion is that, for the moment, they not be deleted, even though they are taking a lot of space. --WanYao 20:25, 1 September 2007 (BST)
Hell no. We don't need an archive. For 'history'? So what? I can see what the military said about the suburb last week. Who cares about that? Again, I'd look to the suburb page and point out that they don't keep archives for an arguably more important page. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 01:36, 2 September 2007 (BST)
Well, I happen to think that keeping an archive is useful. Dux, if you don't wanna, fine... Anyone who does, let's talk and figure out how to do it. If we're going to. --WanYao 03:58, 2 September 2007 (BST)
Archiving is good, I've never dissed it as a whole. Talk pages. Promotion bids. Suggestions. They're important for evidence or precedent. However, these military braodcasts will become like spam if you paste every single one here. Suburbs can also change within 24 or 48hrs. There is just no point to archive this stuff. Name another type of report that is archived. Suburb announcements or news don't count. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 04:06, 2 September 2007 (BST)
I will be archiving them based on the precedent set by suburb news pages. These reports show the state of the city at certain times and could be good for historical purposes if anyone wants to reminisce on how things got in some places et cetra. There will and should be an archive. Also it might be good if they were reorded so it's newest up top, no one likes scrolling.--Karekmaps?! 07:21, 2 September 2007 (BST)\
I'm doing it now, also I'm lowering the removal time to 5 days because we already have a shitload of reports. I'm also going to format them more like news reports on suburb pages so they are easier to browse.--Karekmaps?! 07:26, 2 September 2007 (BST)
Archives potentially provide a lot of useful information. Zombie group movements... human incursions and their success/failure... various other trends and tendencies which following could prove quite useful... I agree archiving them HERE in the long run makes it spammish. But on the suburb pages they'd not be spammish at all. Although at the same time, having them all in one place is kind of nice... maybe they need to be grouped or organised somehow? ... Oh, and Dux you can't just say, "Give me another example... oh but these important examples? They don't count, sorry..." I'm shouting foul! on that one, rightly so... --WanYao 17:26, 2 September 2007 (BST)
Here's the thing... this is the the most important argument, for the present moment. The feature is BRAND NEW. Moreover, everyone is keeping it kind of hush to allow players to have the fun of discovering and going ZOMG LOOK CHOPPER REPROTS!! ;P So, until the feature is more widely known and the community decides what to do with them -- for example, put them in the individual Suburbs' News or a special section, or whatever -- please do that community a serve and hold on to them. Again, if you don't wanna, heck... email them to me and I'll have a folder in my gmail for them, whatever... --WanYao 17:46, 2 September 2007 (BST)
Actually, there's always wiki page history... --~~~~ [Talk] 19:38, 2 September 2007 (BST)
Actually no, the wiki page history doesn't contain all edits, many of the older pages are missing many older edits.--Karekmaps?! 03:35, 3 September 2007 (BST)
However the edits do go for at least 6-12 months. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 03:54, 3 September 2007 (BST)
Does it really matter? There is an archive now, why not use it, also I already set it so all of August is added so only removal from this page needs to be done until september starts going out.--Karekmaps?! 03:57, 3 September 2007 (BST)

Using Choppers for Reports

I say we do not use the chopper reports at all for the danger reports. We should instead rely on DEMON reports that will not be posted on the wiki, as they are highly sensitive and top secret. All in favor? Good. It's settled. --Sonny Corleone RRF DORIS CRF pr0n 03:54, 3 September 2007 (BST)

Reports Quality

Recently there was a part of reports that was bothering me all the time. Even if the suburb is totally in ruines it was saying "minimal structural damage". Now look at the broadcast for 7th Sept that i bolded. Heh, guess that was just a bug and now this part of reports will also be reliable --~~~~ [Talk] 08:00, 8 September 2007 (BST)

So it's a message to explain that RUINed suburbs will now be reported as heavily damaged? 'arm. 16:35, 8 September 2007 (BST)
Yes, they were reported as "minimal structural damage" before and it was buggy. As you can see in recent reports, they are now "heavy structural damage" or "most of the buildings are ruined" --~~~~ [Talk] 18:45, 8 September 2007 (BST)

Iwitness

Iwitness makes it super-easy to archive External Military reports. It doesn't add any organization, but records are displayed by "Malton Time". But I assume most folks reading this knew that. The neat thing (and the reason I'm writing this) is that a bit of search-foo makes it equally easy to find all available records that contain External Military broadcasts, with a very minimal amount of spam (none observed so far) because the search term can be very specific. I've described this on the main page, and given a link, including a tiny url in case people want to promote it in game. I'm sorry if it looks like advertsising, but I couldn't think of any more subtle way to detail this method of archiving / retrieving External Military broadcasts without disrupting the article flow. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 16:01, 11 September 2007 (BST)

I have all reports since the first one archived here on Iwitness, but in private... Usefull to calculate exact time --~~~~ [Talk] 18:22, 11 September 2007 (BST)
I expected somebody did. I've been talking to Max Grivas (he's the one who coded the DB side and all the other advanced stuff) about setting up a system to automatically compile a record of all broadcasts made on 29.63 MHz and the time of broadcast, but its a difficult project to automatically get the times sorted out. This might be a very limited instance where I'd be willing to make a call to data in private records, as the use would in no way reveal who had made the record, where they were at, etc. The main purpose would be to find records where the broadcast had happened within the past 24 hours, so the time could be pinned down better. I already have a character with 10 radios who I'm using to make Iwitness records, but the broadcasts are sometimes a bit stale by the time I log in. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 00:11, 12 September 2007 (BST)

Great Idea

Just wanted to let everyone know that I love this idea. It perfectly fits the RP aspect and it's helpful to both sides. I have yet to see a report that was biased. Cheers. --Paddy Dignam 18:25, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

You won't ever see a biased external military report; they are automatically composed by the games server based on info in the server database, not player observation and opinion. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 04:26, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

External Military Report Page

The name and function perhaps are to close to this page's, but I hope to have made some substantial improvements. It seems to me that the primary failing of this page is that the information is organized chronologically, not by location. To that end, I'm making a new page that will be for the collection of reports by LOCATION, eventually indexed onto a map. It should be up and running in the next couple days, but won't have much data to show until I get radio reports for all the suburbs- either fresh ones that I log, or old ones dug from the archives here. Hopefully people will help with that? The main problem I see swapping the data over is that I used a slightly different format- mina allows you to be much lazier about assigning a time to the broadcast, because its now fairly clear that you don't get multiple broadcasts about the same suburb in a short enough period to need to worry about pinning things down to the exact hour. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 23:26, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

What is in a External Military Report?

Pursuant to the above project, I'm looking for a way to put values on the info in a EMR. Here's what I've got so far- please add any useful info. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 00:29, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Zombie Numbers

These seem given as approximate numbers outside / on the streets. Values seem to be "looks/looking clear" and "a couple dozen" on the extreem low end. Reports give estimated numbers ("about twenty", "thirty or so") for larger numbers of zombies, and then seem to just say "more than a hundred" beyond that. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 00:29, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

External_Military/Archive/200709#27_September_2007: around a hundred and fifty; External_Military/Archive/200709#25_September_2007: nearly two hundred; External_Military/Archive/200709#4_September_2007: well over two hundred the only reason is that there's no such big numbers in a suburb very often --~~~~ [talk] 06:57, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Power

Seems given as "no lights on down there", "several buildings with power", "a lot of buildings with lights on", and "lights are on across the suburb". SIM Core Map.png Swiers 00:29, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

More (in no order): can't see any signs of life; a lot of lights on, looks the area's been reclaimed; only one building with lights on (sometimes this building is named in report, example); a few buildings with lights on; power's on across most of the area --~~~~ [talk] 07:04, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Infrastructure

This seems to report the number of ruined buildings. Observed values (in assumed order) include "can't see a single ruined building", "infrastructure looks intact too", "only a few buildings damaged", and "serious collateral damage". SIM Core Map.png Swiers 00:29, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

More (in no order): most of the buildings are ruined, heavy structural damage, some minor structural damage, the whole suburb's wrecked --~~~~ [talk] 07:00, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

EMRP up and running.

Its good to go now- just plug in reports. The External Military Report Map is fully functional and allows direct comparison of the suburb danger level colors vs summaries of logger External Military reports. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 03:43, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

Automated External Military Report map

Here's my humble contribution. :) I've programmed up a database-driven map of external military reports: here. The map looks pretty lousy still, but the data is there. Currently I've got it set to only show reports within the last 7 days, because those are the most useful. I've also written up a script that will pull each day's logged reports from iWitness using the search URL someone posted above. (I hope they won't mind; it's only about 6 pages a day.)

It looks like reports have a chance of happening every 10 minutes (though they happen much less often than that on average). Suburbs seem to be chosen entirely at random -- a few days ago I noticed one suburb getting reported on twice with only 40 minutes of separation. After parsing all the reports in the wiki and the most recent ones from iWitness, I think I've identified all the phrases that are currently used in the reports, but I don't know exactly what they all mean (like, is "minimal structural damage" worse or better than "some minimal structural damage?"). That will require some scouting, I think, to review what a suburb looks like immediately after its status report.

The breakdown of messages described above is mostly accurate, except for a few exceptions. If the first part of the report gives a number of at least "a dozen" zombies, it'll be followed by a second message saying whether the zombies are spread out or grouped together. And the infrastructure message may be followed by one or more reports of the status of individual buildings, often missing words from the end. Also, the highest number count I've seen so far is "well over four hundred", but I suspect it can go higher than that. There are few examples above "about two hundred".

I also noticed, in the wiki, exactly one report that didn't fit the normal pattern. It seems to be flavortext: 7 September 2007 (19:06) "... report quality ... minimal structural damage ... this isn't conventional warfare ... infrastructure won't be sustaining any serious ... is that understood ..." --Sterling Bershadsky 18:24, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

cool. you're not the first with this idea though, but kudos on programming it! about what messages mean - look on tak page of this: External Military Report Map. About flavorful report - reports before it had bugged display of information about ruins. About time - reports can happen each 20 minutes (XX:00, XX:20, XX:40), don't forget that often people make iwtness-snapshot far after the page was loaded.
Also i have a request for you. Could you please query the reports since 9 November 2007 in a text file with format that is used here in archives (including brackets [[, ]] on the buildings names). That way we could complete our archives - i was parsing stuff manually before until at some point i decided to write a script but had no time for it since...
p.s. you forgot to put some stub index page to folder --~~~~ [talk] 19:55, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
I actually got the idea for it by looking at this talk page, where it was mentioned further up. And thanks for reminding me about the stub index page.
Currently the only data I've got in my database is the reports from the wiki, and the last week's worth of reports from iWitness. I'll see about getting you that text file if I manage to fill in the rest. I need to do some more code tweaking before I'm ready to start taking in a lot of past reports from iWitness, though.--Sterling Bershadsky 04:17, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
Great work! Hell no I don't mind you scraping data from Iwitness. That's exactly the sort of thing I WANT people to use Iwitness for. As you say, your only calling up a few pages a day, though with all the "EXTERNAL MILITARY" records I personally make, its probably more than 6.
When I created the EMRP and EMRM this is actually what I really wanted. Updating those by had is a real pain in the ass, and I've fallen way behind on it. Perhaps we could collaborate on a project over at maps.urbandead.info? I've got AMPLE storage space and bandwidth for such things. If nothing else, you could streamline your code by having direct access to the Iwitness database, rather than having to dig through the HTML record pages. As far as collaboration goes, I can't myself do database stuff (User:Max Grivas did that) but am pretty good with the rest of PHP, javascript, and HTML, so would be happy to make the map look pretty, etc. I'd love to dress up your code a bit to make it work a bit more like the above pages, say by grabbing the danger map colors and integrating them (not 100% sure how that could be done, though it looks you could mange it) and auto-parsing the EMR's into a set of stats like I used on the EMRM, only maybe with a graphical indicator instead of those ugly letters / numbers. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 21:49, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
I can't make a good-looking webpage to save my life, so I think collaborating would be a great idea. I'll send you an email. --Sterling Bershadsky 04:17, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
Even better, I've started a thread about it in the iWitness forum: link --Sterling Bershadsky 06:00, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
I have all records since the early october-or-so in Iwitness in Public area (well maybe few exceptions that are in private), submited by characters Duke Garland and Hangrah Hragrah, when i fill them into wiki archives, like this i take it from those my iwitness records.
Also, i know my way around databases and php, and i'm kind-of free till the 7th january so i'ld be glad to dive into this project too. --~~~~ [talk] 09:59, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

I thought that the *crash* *static* *silence* message only appeared when a transmitter was destroyed. Is it normal to hear this on 25.96? Should there be something about it on this page?--Calim 06:55, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

This certainly isn't usual. I logged in to find the same report. That said, reports have resumed.

Best to watch out for future occurrences, if any. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 17:30, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Seems it has happened before, and very recently. Possibly it's that somebody tuned a radio to 25.96 (which cannot be broadcast on) but its destruction still causes that crash-static-silence broadcast. In which case this is just a minor bug. The joint times are just an amazing coincidence if so. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 18:10, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Radio Silence

I don't know if this is worth mentioning, but during 29-30 June 2009, the External Military radio was silence for two full days. This is not normal, is it? I don't know what happened. Perhaps the Military helicopter(s) ran out of fuel, or crash. If you think this incident has some significance, feel free to add it to the article. -- Kittithaj 16:14, 2 July 2009 (BST)
