Project Notes

The much anticipated master locations list his herby started... With any luck we'll have it done by the end of the month. Be advised this is my current work in progress, and any individual or disambiguation pages will follow. edited from originalConndrakamod T W! 18:47, 19 May 2006 (BST)

Done Crooktown for you. It appears there is nothing about Crooketown done yet, unless I screwed up. –Xoid STFU! 10:19, 15 May 2006 (BST)

Since we are pretty much doing this anyway, I added it to the projects list, with us three listed as members. Maybe we can suck in get others to help. –Xoid STFU! 04:40, 17 May 2006 (BST)

Hey guys, heres an issue I think I found; I was looking for a suburb to do and I saw that some Location Lists were shorter than the others; that means that either some lists have more than 100 and some have less; should we start putting the # next to all our entrys so that we can check after submitting them? --Karlsbad 18:54, 19 May 2006 (BST)

That's only because of multi-block buildings that are condensed into one entry.--Brizth mod T W! 19:54, 19 May 2006 (BST)

Stage 1 Completed Suburbs

All Suburbs Completed: The links on the master list should now be correct. Moving onto Stage two.

Stage Two

Allright, I'd like to set up the "I'll take "X" suburb again so that we can create the necessary "Merged Pages" like Streets of Dunell Hills and Necrotech Yagoton for each of the categories... we wouldnt be doing the actual 9x9s yet just the merged pages with the list of appropriate entries and categories (although copying the 9x9 template onto the page for each entry is probibly a good Idea). To avoid too much moving of articles I woulsd also suggest anything that currently has its own entry NOT be moved to the merged pages. My hope is once we get this far more "casual users" will pick up the ball and enter information on their favorite locations... Conndrakamod T W! 17:52, 25 May 2006 (BST)

From the wiki Location Guide:

For consistency, suburb building type page names should be of the format suburbname buildingtype(plural), e.g. Huntley Heights Museums, with the following exceptions:

  • NecroTech suburbname
  • suburbname Auto Repair Shops
  • suburbname Carpark
  • suburbname Fire Department
  • suburbname Police Department
  • suburbname School District
  • suburbname Wasteland
  • Streets of suburbname

Note that suburbname Pubs should be used instead of suburbname Arms.

I'm almost done with the Families of Malton list and about ready to come back to this project... anybody else ready to start Stage Two with me? Conndrakamod T W! 14:20, 30 May 2006 (BST)

I'll start with Mockridge Heights and head east. Is there a set style to these pages? If you want them any different to the Streets of Mockridge Heights, you'd better let me know --Boxy 14:38, 30 May 2006 (BST)
No, that looks cool Boxy... You might want to include the 3x3 map template though. Dont worry about filling it out yet, just include it. Oh and if by chance there is only one of a location (Autoshop PD FD etc..) you know that it doesnt need a page right? just making sure we are on the same page. Conndrakamod T W! 16:03, 30 May 2006 (BST)
Okay. So, every type of building/block gets a group page, unless there's only 1 of that type --Boxy 16:19, 30 May 2006 (BST)
Correct. Yay! communication is a wonderful thing... Conndrakamod T W! 16:47, 30 May 2006 (BST)
Cool, I'm also assuming that Motels and Hotels go in suburbname Hotels. Boxy 10:20, 31 May 2006 (BST)
You are correct sir... Conndrakamod T W! 10:31, 31 May 2006 (BST)

As a note, for the merged pages, I've come up with a set of templates that are slightly different to the regular locationbox. Template:Locationblockmerge and Template:Infomerge are basically a way to avoid having the basic info box presented 4-5 times on a single page - instead you can take the Info box and place it at the top of the page. Their syntax is effectively identical to the original Template:Locationblock, so you won't have to worry about re-learning how to use each of them (and, of course, it's easy enough to switch between the two templates). -- Odd Starter talkModW! 04:05, 31 May 2006 (BST)

Stage Three

This will begin the actual Mapping Process when we are Done With Stage Two...

Stage Four

aka Beatification... Searching the web for appropriate Pics to flesh out the "Merged Pages"

Individual Pages

A lot of the pages are out of date and broken. A lot of the buildings use the suburb_color= code that makes them look like Fire Stations. To solve this switch suburb with location. Also some ofthem are using the old template. Some of them don't have and surroundings place on the map. I've done a lot of Page 1 and Page 2. So if anyone wants to helps add more to them and start Page 3 and 4 then that would be great. Sonny Corleone WTF 18:18, 20 May 2006 (BST)

To toot my own horn:
I've been fixing that since the changes in the template where made. And I've been doing the works; adding the coordinate redirect, the regular redirect, moving to the correct name, ensuring that there are no "duplicate" locations… (Y'know like 6 churches with the same name.) and creating disambiguation pages when there are. Removing erroneous categories…
But all that is irrelevant. This is the locations list we are working on, not their pages. Sorry for being an arse, but, well… I am. :-p –Xoid STFU! 03:14, 21 May 2006 (BST)
Oh ok. Well I guess I'll continue doing it. Sonny Corleone WTF 13:17, 21 May 2006 (BST)

Pages Still Needing Work

I have the complete locations list in an Excell doc. If anyone wants/needs it email me at jason.bowles AT gmail.com. I'm catching what I can, but looking through a list of 10,000 names by sight.... Conndrakamod T W! 13:18, 23 May 2006 (BST) :::List is 812 kb long and is the entire list sorted alphabeticly w/o the generics.

As a note, it might be worth considering, as a general policy, to include other buildings with the same name on specific building disambiguation pages (for example, Applegate Alley including within it Applegate Alley Police Department). -- Odd Starter talkModW! 03:04, 24 May 2006 (BST)

I just had a thought; Why on earth do that? I'm thinking we should follow Wikipedia's, and have something like this:
      __________\ Useful Items#Beer
     / /
    / ___________\ the Beer Building
   / / /
Beer
\ \________\ Beer Towers __________\ Beer Place School (Crowbank)
    \ / / /
     \___________\ Beer Place School
/ \__________\ Beer Place School (Santlerville)
                                            /

(NOTE: I'm talking about the hierarchical structure only; not visual formatting.) –Xoid STFU! 05:38, 14 June 2006 (BST)

Just saying hello and letting you all know that I've decided to officially join your merry project. Thanks to Xoid for giving me the go-ahead to get my hands dirty on this one. --Bob Hammero ASSU! 09:38, 23 May 2006 (BST)

Er, unless I'm actually part of the other, similarly named one (thanks again, Xoid). My mistake. Is there a page/talk page for the Locations Pages Project already, or should I create one? --Bob Hammero ASSU! 10:46, 23 May 2006 (BST)
Welcome aboard Bob, we've been using this page as the Talk/projects notes... Conndrakamod T W! 13:19, 23 May 2006 (BST)
Thank you. Together, we shall achieve world domination through the creation of a comprehensive map of all of Malton! Mwahahaha! :-) --Bob Hammero ASSW!U! 19:21, 23 May 2006 (BST)

Boxy

I'd like to help guys, where I can. I'm no expert at this, but I can copy basic coding, and organisation, pretty well. Seems to me that some of your merged pages, Streets of Dunell Hills for example, are going to be very impracticle (for map navigation purposes) if we include all of the 9 block templates for each and every street. Could I be presumptuous and suggest that once you get more than 3 or 4 to a page, that you just put links to individual pages for now, and if you're going to take the time to do a 9 block template, just put it on the individual page, even if that's all that's there? Boxy 12:45, 27 May 2006 (BST)
The reason for the merged pages is so that we don't have a big set of stub pages that have no real chances of expansion. If there are nine Streets in a suburb, and none of them have any real significance, or any real activity going on in them, it seems... pointless for each of them to have the same cookie-cutter page. That is why they all go onto merged pages. So having merged pages link to the actual pages sorta defeats the purpose of the merged page to begin with... -- Odd Starter talkModW! 16:56, 27 May 2006 (BST)
Agreed, Besides the Wiki isn't as much for map navigation as for maintaining information about those locations... The Map of Malton is really best for that. Conndrakamod T W! 00:58, 28 May 2006 (BST)
I don't see the point in having ~30 (40 in Dunnell Hills) 9 block templates on the one page, if not for navigation purposes. The only significance (most) streets have is navigation from one building to the next.
What is the problem with a big collection of "stub" pages? They're not really stubs if they've got all the relevant info.
If you're going to take the time to do the 9 block templates for every street, it's not much trouble to create a "cookie cutter" page for it anyway, and put it where all the other 9 block templates around it are already pointing. This is how I'd see the combined page (just for eg), pretty easy to do, and it can go either way in the future, adding the info on there, or creating individual pages. I might start doing it for the small area that I am in, in Mockridge Heights, and you can make a decision when you get finished with stage 1 eh?
I can see the potential for the wiki's use as a much more informative navigation tool than the static maps. Not as useful at finding where you want to go over large distances, but very powerful in finding where you want to camp for the night within a quadrant (for survivors), or where your next attack would have the most strategic effect (for zombies). --Boxy 02:38, 28 May 2006 (BST)
Or, of course, you can tell me to f off, you've made yer decision ;) Boxy 02:47, 28 May 2006 (BST)

Brizth

I wrote some perl code that enables me very quicky create the lists from UD maps. Unfortunately I'm currently away from the computer that has the code. So, I'll probably finish all the suburbs in few hours, when I get back. That is, if no one has any objections. Anyone has any? --Brizth mod T W! 15:05, 21 May 2006 (BST)

Test it first. Otherwise, go nuts. –Xoid STFU! 15:08, 21 May 2006 (BST)
East Boundwood and East Grayside were done with it (had to leave right after that, so I couldn't try it properly on others). And few comparisons I made earlier seemed to work nice. --Brizth mod T W! 15:12, 21 May 2006 (BST)

Done. Whee, all the lists are full. Now just some cleanup and we are done. --Brizth mod T W! 17:46, 21 May 2006 (BST)

Karlsbad

You take the High Road, I'll take the Low Road- See you in Molebank, suckas! --Karlsbad 10:55, 15 May 2006 (BST)

WOO HOO Helpers! yee HA! errr ahem... Sorry I've lived in Arkansas too long I guess... please excuse that there outburst…
One other thing. Karlsbad I've been keeping the "a" off of "a warehouse", "a carpark", "a cemetary" et al since that was how "Nov" started that buisness... and there is suposed to be a "." after all the "St"s but thats easy enough to fix later. --Conndrakamod T W! 11:08, 15 May 2006 (BST)
Are we knocking of the uncapitalized "the" as well? --Karlsbad 11:17, 15 May 2006 (BST)
Nope, keeping the "the" but we are spelling out "Police Department" and "Fire Station" when abreviated. Nov was the golden boy of location stubs so I want to make sure we do it ahem right. If you get what I'm saying… --Conndrakamod T W! 11:31, 15 May 2006 (BST)
Can I call dibs on Ketchelbank? –Xoid STFU! 14:07, 15 May 2006 (BST)
Too late. Done Ridleybank as well. Damn this is boring. –Xoid STFU! 14:45, 15 May 2006 (BST)
