Beginners Guide?

Has anyone thought about writing a beginners guide? I know one would be very helpful, as I am a beginner, and I really have no idea what I'm doing. Worshipme 02:15, 19 October 2006 (BST)

Try Project Welcome they have a guide there. --MarieThe Grove 13:08, 27 October 2006 (BST)

Historical Groups

I don't think this gets the attention it deserves and it should be in the menus. I suggest adding Historical Groups under Groups in the Player Information box/table. And I suggest adding Historical Group Voting beneath that. -- TexasFlag.gif BubbaT 20:17, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Seconded. --Xoid 13:12, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

An Idea

I have somthing I wish for some poeple to view, this is My own opinion and it is not Spam.

Please look carfuly at the Malton Political Government Act.

Just saying, that bill of rights is balanced a lot toward Survivors. In my opinion, it should be 'The right to kill a hostile Zombie', so that way the peaceful Zombies won't be exterminated. Zombies should also be allowed to run for the positions, and as so I am instituting the PZP, Peaceful Zombies Party.--Sarpek 23:08, 20 June 2007 (BST)

Read up on punctuation before you start trying to write constitutions. I do agree that the mall thing is a useful link and should be on the front page, actually, though. If nobody objects I'll at least stick it in the Player Info section & template in a day or two.--'STER-Talk-ModP! 00:44, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Signatures

Allright. I'm suprised that no-one knows how to use sigs. You don't have to create a template! You don't!

Just go to 'My Preferences' at the top of the page, and copy and paste your sig code in the sig box. Too many people are using templates, which makes it awkward, and not subst:-ing them in. It's not right. It takes 5 seconds more to copy and paste the code, so why not do it?

That's why I'm thinking we call a ban on all sig template use, to avoid the clutter at the bottom of talk pages. Don't you agree? - - Scalene's Lollipop.jpg Lil' 'alene Widley 04:31, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Yes, this is almost a policy. But I'm no writer, and I'd like some opinions from people... - - Scalene's Lollipop.jpg Lil' 'alene Widley 04:31, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
Where is this magical sig box? --Sgt. Expendable JG 00:19, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
Like I said, go to 'My Preferences', at the top of the wiki, and edit 'My Signature'. Try testing it with and without raw content - it goes wierd occasionally. Look - mine works, no problem. - - Scalene's Lollipop.jpg Lil' 'alene Widley 13:23, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
Like I implied, it's not there. I click on Preferences and the only place the word signature appears is next to a checkbox concerning raw signatures. --Sgt. Expendable JG 20:04, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
It's the "Nickname" field. --Brizth M T 20:13, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
People on this wiki prefer templated sigs over conventional sigs. I think you'd have a hard time pushing a policy like that. In fact, iirc, there were attempts to discourage (or prohibit) templated sig use already, but they failed. --Daranz. talk . mod . 14:41, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
I don't get it. It's a lot simpler to use a proper singnature than any other, and it's preventing template spam. *thinks* I'll figure out a way to stop it soon enough... - - Scalene's Lollipop.jpg Lil' 'alene Widley 07:44, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
You do realise that we have those templates set as our signatures in preferences? So they are as easy as regular signatures. --Brizth M T 08:40, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Well, why not make the code for the template your sig, and save the trouble? - - Scalene's Lollipop.jpg Lil' 'alene Widley 08:46, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
Because this way we can change our sigs and have olds signatures update as well. Also, it removes some clutter from the edit view, since you can have signature spanning several lines but shows only as one template. Of course all this causes some serious technical problems why it is not used lot in other wikis. --Brizth M T 10:34, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Possible Bug/Possible Banning

Everytime I log in I get the message that my IP has hit the server too many times. I play at work....Which is bad, I know....So I know there's no one else who's eating up server hits....Have I been blocked, banned, or am I just being messed with by some weird bug? Tomsense76 15:07, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

If you haven't donated for the character you're using, you only get 160 IP hits per day. Cyberbob  Talk  13:26, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I know about the 160 hits per 24 hour peroid. My complaint is that I log on after not being on all weekend to find that I'm still blocked due to too many hits to the server.... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tomsense76 (talkcontribs) .

happens a lot if you are on dial-up, AOL is particularly bad. Log off then log back on again, that often works but is bad when you ar in a live fight and go from fine to IP'd out in 2 hits! If it is not dial up then???--Honestmistake 17:18, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Well unfortuonately it's not dial up or AOL, so I don't know what the problem could be, logging in and out doesn't help either -_-;; in fact logging in and out sends the number down each time I do it Teraji 10:45, 8 March 2007

If you are using wireless networks then people not from your work could be accessing your main IP line. Wireless networks take one IP and create internal IP addresses that feed off the one public line. Aka Kitsune 23:21, 15 April 2007 (BST)

Help-out Page

Okay this is my suggestion to the wiki there needs to be a help out page built, and what this page would contain is a list of things that ned to be or could be improved on and people who want to help out the wiki will take an assigned job. The only reason I'm even suggesting this is because people say I don't help out enough around here well tell me what needs to be fixed and maybe I could.--Lonewolf17a 17:49, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

we have this page here, that points to several ongoing projects. You could help in one, or try to find something else that needs to be done. I try to make some maintenance in pages that are in need of some, and to make things look better styled with some css coding and stuff... the better thing for you is to look at the wiki and try to find something that you would like to contribute, not just sit around and wait for people to tell you what to do. --People's Commissar Hagnat [cloned] [mod] 18:50, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Hrm. I thought it was protected. Turns out it's just semi-protected. --Daranz.t.mod.W(M)^∞. 18:27, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
You could ask for the protection of both {{comannounce}} and {{lastupdate}} but, as I see it, these templates have never been vandalized and are updated very frequently by normal users instead of mods. Maybe in order to keep them more updated the unprotected status should be mantained. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRCT+1 18:38, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
I'm not saying they should be protected. I'm saying I was unaware of the fact that they can be edited by everyone (essentially). Besides, if they start getting vandalized, we can protect them then. This is a wiki after all. --Daranz.t.mod.W(M)^∞. 18:44, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
Yap, you're right. I wonder where is that horde of vandals that used to dwell here when Amazing was just recently banned and BobHammero was still around. It's not like I miss them (the vandals), but it has been a while since this wiki had such a clear vandal case as someone blanking some pages. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRCT+1 18:48, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
Matt, I know for a fact that {{comannounce}} was vandalized frequently when you were gone. I don't think {{lastupdate}} was, but please don't speak unless you know what you are talking about.--Gage 20:17, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

New page Idea

Should we have a page to show the moste Famous Players of the game? --Apex 00:30, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

If they are famous, there shouldn't need to be a page detailing who they are; by definition, people already know. Besides, how would you control who goes on the page? At best, it would be a popularity / propaganda contest. Paging all drama queens, please report to the Famous Players page! Swiers X:00 16:05, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Nope, don't think that would be a good idea... You'd constantly get people editing it with themselves on top, and you'd probably have major zerging issues. Whisper 20:19, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Server down?

I'm not sure if this the proper place to ask this, if not, my apologies in advance. I've been unable to log in all day. Is the server down for maintenance or some other reason? Bjornsthorn 18:43, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

The wiki has been working fine for me. It is always wonky at 0800 GMT though. That's for everyone as far as I know. Thari in Argentina, Cyberbob and Xoid in Australia and myself in the USA all have troubles at that time.--Gage 20:15, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
Ah, thank you for clearing that up. SuperMario24 20:18, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Category Abuse?

I've noticed that several groups are listed as sub-categories on various group / organization pages. Why are they listed in this manner? Why are not ALL such groups listed in this manner?
Also, these same groups often show up as categories for locations. Location descriptions are supposed to be neutral, are they not? How can a location description be neutral if its categorized as part of a specific group? --Swiers X:00 15:55, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
I agree with you to some extent. A location page should not be strictly controlled by one group. However, if there is history concerning that group in that location, it should probably be acceptable up to a point. SuperMario24 16:14, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
So, the Ridleybank article should be in the Category of "Ridleybank Resitance Front"? Who gets to edit these articles to add new categories? Could any old survivor group come along and add themselves as a category just because they wandered into Ridleybank? --Swiers X:00 16:24, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Oh, and I figured out the "subcat" trick they are using. What gives a group the right to declare themselves a subcat? Isn't EVERY group a subcat of "groups"? What makes some of them special enough to declare themselves subcat? Swiers X:00 16:24, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Subcat? Whatever do you mean? --Hubrid Nox Mod WTF U! B! 16:26, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

I have a habit of stating the obvious....However, I did check some of his former posts and found this. Perhaps it has something to do with it.
"How does a group qualify as a subcategory here? DHPD is listed as a subcategory on the groups page, but it doesn't seem any different from any other group to me- its certainly not a type of group, is it? What is the code for making a group a subcategory, and who validly is allowed to use that code? Right now it looks like anybody clever enough to know that code gets to promote / publicize their group(s) in ways other groups are not"
SuperMario24 16:36, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Ah, I see. That would be wrong if there was something preventing other groups from advertising/organising themselves in a similar manner. There isn't, so there's nothing wrong with it. --Hubrid Nox Mod WTF U! B! 16:39, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Well, since there's nothing wrong with it, I will proceed to use it as well.  ;) Swiers X:00 16:43, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Wiki Bugs

I've noticed that the number of pages that don't exist but still show up as blue links on Special:Uncategorizedpages has been growing. I'm almost positive that they have spawned from one of these two wiki bugs Bug 7023 or Bug 6967 there seem to be rather simple fixes for both, is there anyone on the wiki with the need permissions to fix these pages and if so could they? Thanks. Vantar 21:49, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Lexicon

Just because Talk:MP is a good place to attract the attention of a lot of wiki-fiddlers: the Lexicon really desperately needs people to fill it back up. I'm not sure why everyone is being so unenthusiastic about it because all the articles that do eventually get written are very good. It's really fun, not much effort, and will be really fun to read when it's done--but we can only finish if more people join.--'STER-Talk-ModP! 04:16, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Writing fiction is hard work (at least for me, and I've even done it on a paid basis). Also, the lexicon projects layout / procedures seem arcane at best, or even downright discouraging. If you want people writing fiction, why not just a big happy "submit fiction here" link (that perhaps takes them to some BRIEF guideline and peer editing areas) instead of the current intimidation? --S.Wiers X:00x-mas tree dead pool 22:40, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
We already have something like that, it's called Malton Chronicles. The Lexicon is supposed to be very structured. The whole point of it is the whole wikiness of it, with articles referencing each other. It can be a bitch to write anything good for it, but it's sort of a game like that. --Daranz.t.mod janitor.W(M)^∞. 23:40, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

Map Of Malton Links?

I'm curious why there is just the single link now?--Theblackgecko 16:33, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

there are two: Map of malton & Zombie map. The maps are not part of the wiki and maintained by the grace of private persons. If the person who created a particular map-site pulls the plug. there is nothing we can do about it. I'm not aware that there are more maps out there.--Vista 16:59, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
The two links that used to be on External Links box on the main page, http://visitmalton.info/ and http://map.aypok.co.uk/index.php, were removed on 6 February 2007 after changes were made to http://redrum.soul-fantasy.net/map.php which made it generally considered superior to the other maps. Game Stat History?

I was wondering if this information is accessable, and if it is, could we put it up for viewing and maybe make a few graphs tracking population stats and class breakdowns over time. I'm guessing that the information is not public, but maybe Kevan has it somewhere and will let it become public if we do all the work to put it up here on the Wiki. --Heretic144 03:52, 5 April 2007 (BST)

News Papers

I think there should be a section made for the games news papers on the wiki. Some examples are The Malton Examiner the Malton Gazette and Malton Mirror--Seloth 15:31, 22 April 2007 (GMT)

Have you seen Category:Press- Vantar 04:28, 29 April 2007 (BST)
Feed the press. As the Malton Gazette posts its fourth issue, it's time for me to start making overreaching demands; namely, put the Malton Gazette on the front page! Please, eh? What do you think? It's quite newbie accessible to read...there, on the top of the Player Information column, very nice.
I don't think it's a bad idea or a non-inclusive paper or something that will fold at the moment; however, how about putting up a Press page (not category page) until we get more than 1 writer, if you don't agree?--Thegreathal 01:53, 7 May 2007 (BST)
P.S. I reverted this page after I posted my own topic, then realized it would fit in here nicely.

DNA extractor & stacks

Maybe I'm having PHENOMENALLY bad luck, but my experience with the DNA extractor is that it will not cycle past a rotter in a stack. The Wiki says you may have to scan a rotter several times before cycling past, but I'm waaaaaay past "several times." On 3 occasions now, I've come to a revive point with a full load of AP and syringes, and hit a rotter in the first scan or 2, then spent my entire remaining stock of AP trying to "cycle past" it. Numerous other occasions less dramatic, where I had only 10-20 AP left, same result. I've probably squandered about 300 AP over the last 6 weeks banging my head against this particular wall, and never once have I seen it cycle past a rotter to the next zed in the stack.

http://wiki.urbandead.com/index.php/Useful_Items#DNA_Extractor Here's a convenient link to the Wiki entry.

Chimerix 01:07, 10 May 2007 (BST)Chimerix, 09 May 2007

If all the zombies in your location have already been scanned, then your DNA extractor will only pick up the one on top of the stack. A rotter usually ends up on top, because all the others get revived, and the only way to get rid of the rotter is to shoot them -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 01:17, 10 May 2007 (BST)

Unarmed Upgrages?

I pitched this Idea on the suggestion page, and I got some mixed feedback, and was suggested to take this to a disscussion page. My idea is, should there be some added skills to the Military skill tree that incease your damage and/or accuracy of your unarmed attacks. An addition of this would actually make the punch attack worth using, and most people underestimate the ability of the human body, and how it may add to the natural balance of the Survivors v. Zeds. My suggestion ID is "20070513 Martial Arts Skill"

Discuss: Is this too out of Genre? Would this help balance the physical prowess of the Survivors against the Zombies? Would this make punch worth using?

--SCfan7 23:04, 18 May 2007 (BST)

You'd be best starting a discussion on the talk page local to your particular suggestion (ie this page), and then linking to the discussion from Talk:Suggestions. That way, more people who like to discuss suggestions will see it. --Toejam 14:58, 24 May 2007 (BST)

Er, I know that sometimes the wiki seems like nothing besides a place to mass produce suggestions like a Chinese sweatshop, but there are other parts to it as well. Just look at the front page, there's the "game information" and "player information" sections which contain links to just about everything you'd want to know about the game. Yeah, there is plenty of help resources both here on the wiki, in the official FAQ and on wikipedia itself. Many people are just too lazy or thick to do a few clicks and read down a page for help. So yeah, be prepared for a heap of fresh meat users to flood the wiki. I've already encountered a few people in-game asking simple questions. I think my PKer character will be working overtime. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 23:46, 18 June 2007 (BST)
Yes, its the laziness / TLDR factor I'm worried about. Look at the many suggestion votes we get that say (in effect) "I think this suggestion does exactly the opposite of what its clearly written description states." Those come from the wiki readers actually smart enough to figure out how to make an edit and vote... 03:08, 20 June 2007 (BST)
Hey, if anything, there'll be more meatshields out there :P --Daranz.t.mod janitor.W(M)^∞. 23:57, 18 June 2007 (BST)

Not a lot of survivors out where I am, Any hostile ones I see will be eaten, though.--Sarpek 22:59, 20 June 2007 (BST)

Thought it was a pain that some users might not know what "article" you guys were referring to, so I went and found a link to it: http://videogames.yahoo.com/printview_feature?eid=518635 . Honestly, I'm surprised that they picked us for their list.... and not Runescape. Meh. --Private Mark 02:10, 24 July 2007 (BST)

Virtually everyone on Digg mocked Urban Dead, I was one of the few people to try to defend it. People have such a hatred for text-based browser games. Geez. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 03:36, 24 July 2007 (BST)
Hello mark. The article was on the main page and in the community portal (actually, it still is there) news boxes. --People's Commissar Hagnat [cloned] [mod] 04:40, 24 July 2007 (BST)
Oops... my apologies, then. Oh well...--Private Mark 21:30, 25 July 2007 (BST)

What is happening?

My zombie is in Roftwood, and there are TONS of survivors OUT in the streets? Is this some parade? I'm infecting everybody! ~m T! 02:19, 20 June 2007 (BST)

Read the section just above this one--re: Yahoo --Barbecue Barbecue 02:22, 20 June 2007 (BST)
I know, they're everywhere. I've seen six in one block in Millen Hills just loitering around, and I've counted 14 survivors outside within a 3 by 3 area. It's madness! Everywhere I go I'm handing out links to the A Beginners Guide to Urban Dead like I'm a drug dealer trying to get 'em hooked. Even my zombie characters from within my profile. --Banana reads Scoundrell for all of Yesterday's News, Today! 02:26, 20 June 2007 (BST)
In center of Lockettside they're almost in each square, unless that square is a vsb building (smart enough to get inside). --Duke GarlandTLCD SSZ 11:08, 20 June 2007 (BST)
My zombie infected 16 newbs and there many more out there. --Buddy Joe 15:34, 20 June 2007 (BST)

Peppardville has fallen, Zeds Rules the Street, should be renamed to Zombie Town USA. Last group of survivors dragged from Meyrick Plaza Police Dept. into the street and killed. --Gnat Food 21:20, 20 June 2007, (EST)

Is chatting with other Urban Dead players permitted?

I have AIM (SN is penitentslayer) and I'd like to talk to some other Urban Dead players about various recruiting groups and other things related to UD, but not many have their AIMs listed. Anyone have any ideas? Is there a listing somewhere?

It is not only permitted, it is a major component of game tactics and community. There are not many general purpose chat rooms, but there are many forums. Most forums are run by a specific player group, but have areas for public discussion. Most groups that have such forums also have caht rooms of some sort available for group members to use while playing.
For more information, try these pages:

Thanks. It's driving me nuts being unable to IM with anyone, though. I'm not sure I can use these IRC chats and forum chatting takes way too long for my taste. Even a list of a handful of UD players with AIM would be helpful.

Yahoo Messenger works just fine as well.--Bagel7 19:24, 21 June 2007 (BST)

Any out-of-game communication between players is usually done within a set group of people (which can be anything from a rag-tag bunch of survivors willing to help each other out, to a huge horde of zeds with a ridiculously complicated chain of command). Because of that, IM clients aren't really the preferable mode of communication; forums and IRC channels are that much better suited for intragroup communications. --Daranz.t.mod janitor.W(M)^∞. 20:00, 21 June 2007 (BST)
Yeah, what he said. To really get anything out of it, you want to talk to 4+ people at the same time, in one window, so they can all hear what everybody says. But I thin YM will handle that, if you already have a group you want to talk to.
BTW, here's a non-group specific forum that has a chatbox.
However, I very much doubt you will find a list of AIM contact info for random UD players, or that people would desire such contact from strangers. ... 20:13, 21 June 2007 (BST)
MSN messenger has group chats, you know... used to use them all the time with my team when i played Real Time Unifciation Wars.... --WanYao 04:21, 6 August 2007 (BST)

Scent Trail - please free to delete, just found forums, sorry

I recently took a headshot and am looking for some revenge, zombie-style (a slow death, perhaps ripping out the innards a la the Pittsburgh mall)...however I am not sure how to find them. How does one enable tracking for Scent Trail? Or is there some type of map that shows me the location of said attacker? Thanks Wudevious 20:17, 6 August 2007 (BST)WuDevious

Where do we advertise zombie movies?

How do I get this next single line splashed all around the wiki?

NEWSFLASH -- Australian Urban Dead players can see zombie films every Thursday night on SBS for weeks and weeks to come!

I will be trying to get it broadcast in game, but in the wiki or even in the game's login page would be awesome!!

Right now the workers at an isolated logging community in a USA forest ere having their entrails nibbled. There are hammers and lengths of pipe and even conflict between the survivors; great stuff with much more to come!

Some environmentalist chained himself to a tree and the zeds are coming....

http://www.sbs.com.au/whatson/index.php3?progdate=09:08:2007 (see 10:50 pm)

"Severed ingeniously sets up a confrontation between eco-activists and loggers that turns decidedly ghoulish and incisively political. In deepest, darkest British Columbia, eco-warriors, loggers and company men are forced to band together for survival as the forest starts to crawl with zombies wearing lumberjack shirts… After the logging company infected trees with a hormone called GX1134, which promoted growth and naturally, increased profits, they discover that there's an unfortunate side effect when the genetically mutated tree sap comes into contact with humans, and turns them into zombies."

They are heading towards the police station, and in my experience in game that usually ends in being eaten.

Shouldnt everyone be dead?

Generators produce carbon monoxide, which is poisonous. Shouldn't everyone be dead if they can sit in a room with a running generator? -Doc Crook 03:58, 6 August 2007 (BST)

UD's not really the type of MMO which has realism in it, now does it? --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 11:22, 6 August 2007 (BST)
I doubt all generators produce CO, plus we don't know where they are placing the generators.--Karekmaps?! 11:24, 6 August 2007 (BST)
All generators produce CO, at least if they are gas powered- which these clearly are. Generator manufacturers include a lot of really big warnings not to run them indoors, but only in well ventilated / outdoor spaces. Neither of which describes a barricaded building, but its also not like buildings in Malton are airtight! ΔΔΔ Swiers BigEYEwitnessLOGOgrey.png 15:32, 6 August 2007 (BST)
And not everyone sleeps in buildings with a running genny... indeed, some GKers actually RP the noxious element into their actions. --Barbecue Barbecue 15:45, 6 August 2007 (BST)

Well i think everyone should use hydrogen fusion generators like I do. They produce no CO, CO2 or SO2 AND the nuclear waste can be used to kill zombies or to perform malicious experiments on them. --Murhapuro 19:38, 8 August 2007 (BST)
Isnt nuclear waste how the zombie problem came about? Pest02 17:05, 12 August 2007 (BST)

Noob and confuzed

First off, how do I find the coordinates for my position? Second, I tried to access the list of items and thier purpose, but it said it was restricted. Is there another or is there any way I can access this list? And third, is there anyway to track or find the location of someone? Any help would be great. --Chuckwagon 00:14, 14 August 2007 (BST)

Ok...

  • items, for a list of items and links to descriptions and their purposes.
  • GPS Units can tell you of your current location.
  • Tacking people is generally a no-can-do, however there are thrid-party tools and websites, some better than others. I don't know much about them. I believe you should check out what iWitness has, Red Rum has and anything that The Department of Emegergency Management offer. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 00:29, 14 August 2007 (BST)
