History

The Doggrell Hotel was built in 1888 and was later remodelled extensively at the turn of the 20th century. Once one of Malton's proudest hotels, she was host to the literati and glitterati of 1920s society but financial scandal in the mid 1970s later forced her to close her doors. She then stood empty for much of the next decade: boarded up, battered and increasingly marked with graffiti and street tags. Since that time, the complex financial fall-out following the collapse of her management has prevented her re-occupation on anything but an informal basis. Towards the end of the 1980s she was home to an art collective who used the abandoned rooms as studios, accommodation and gallery space. Although that group contributed significantly to her preservation, they were inevitably moved on by the authorities. She then went through a further period of shuttered vacancy from the early 1990s until her purchase by an investment consortium in early 2000. Subsequent to that purchase, plans were passed for redevelopment into a block of luxury flats but these stalled and the work was not yet underway at the time of the outbreak. She now stands as a reminder of a distant era, bearing the marks of her sad story both inside and out. She is an eccentric Grande Dame with many a tale to tell.

Drama Club was scheduled to perform "Apocalypse Now" in The Doggrell Hotel for the BARBRAZ organization. However, no one was home at the time so they performed for the two zombies outside the building instead. The group plans to travel in a counter-clockwise expanding spiral from the center of the town to the outer edges. See their group page for performing groups and schedules.
