The Grandon Family was one of the more prominent families in the late 19th and early 20th century, having acquired a large share of a firearms manufacturer. They advocated public safety and sought to aid the public in dealing with the rising crime in Malton. Grandon Place Police Department was directly funded by the family and, nearly 50 years later, another building with the name of Grandon Place Police Department was funded by a descendant of the family with the help of City Council.

Notable Family Members

The Grandon Family history in Malton extends back to the early 18th century with the arrival of a poor couple with nothing but a change of clothes and hearts full of hope.

John B. Grandon

Born sometime in the early 1700's, John B. Grandon was a former sailor from Northern England who had moved to Malton with his wife, Elizabeth Tyler Grandon, whom he had courted some years before he arrived in Malton. John began to work in the lumber industry, making enough headway to build a modest house in central Malton. He passed away as a middle-class worker on August 23, 1752, from a fall that broke his neck.

Henry Grandon

Henry Grandon was born on April 2, 1862, to James and Rachael Grandon. He studied at the Oxford University from 1874 to 1877 and then returned home to take over his late fathers estate, who had been murdered by criminal elemts. His death would stay with Henry for the rest of his life. After securing his families estate, Henry began to invest in a number of enterprises, including elements of the railroad, firearms, and refining industries. By 1889, his wealth had grown substantially and he had married a Miss Jane Haston and began to invest even more heavily in the firearms industry. By the turn of the century, Henry Grandon decided to protect the public to the best of his ability and funded the construction of Grandon Place Police Department. He passed away on May 31, 1916, leaving his wealth to his children, Dylan James Grandon and Martin Henry Grandon. Both decided to invest it in a new company, but it fell through and much of the Grandon fortune fell with it.

Jane S. Grandon

Jane S. Grandon was born on January 21, 1948, to a widowed mother. She had lost her father in the war and it shaped how she would be throughout the rest of her life. Miss Grandon became an advocate of civil safety in the city of Malton and would regularly submit requests for more police officers and police stations to the city council. Eventually, the City Council caved in and provided a large sum of money to be used for the construction of a number of new police stations and more police officer training. One police station was named after her family, copying the name of an already built Police Department, Grandon Place Police Department was constructed in Miss Grandon's home suburb. She passed away on December 18, 1992, from a heart attack with no known descendants.
