History

Known mostly by the public for its inviting stone structure and five-star service, the Markes Hotel actually has a quite dark history marked by mafia connections, drug dealings, and even, death... Commissioned in late 1955, it was originally designed to be a high class alternative to the much older The Leggatt Hotel. It was scheduled for completion in 1960; however, do to several unforeseen complications, it was not made until 1967 and didn't open until 1969. The first and foremost of these 'complications' was the sudden and grisly murder of its head architect, rumored to be by the mafia. From then on the hotel went in a different direction, supervised by a new and mysterious figure, John Carly. Instead of being a glass high-rise building, it would become a four story stone building; a throwback to times past.

After completion, many people flocked to the hotel, causing it to become one of the centers of culture in north-east Malton, but public opinion dropped sharply after several investors were found to be planting drugs in guests rooms in order to blackmail them for large sums of money. Soon afterwards 11 were killed in a gang shootout that was to be known as the 'Markes Massacre', the eleven including five guests, two police officers, and four gang members. John Carly was put under investigation for the shootout, but committed suicide by jumping out of the window in his top floor apartment at the Markes. The reason for the attack was never discovered.

In the late 90s, attendance took a turn for the worse. Due to the end of the dot-com bubble, population was decreasing sharply in Millen Hills, and the Markes would have to close down. Thankfully, due to the appearance of several NecroTech buildings, and therefore, more jobs, the Markes was left standing and today is used as a comfy safehouse and entry point by the survivors and DEM cadets of Malton.
