This page is for the request of page deletions within the Urban Dead wiki. Due to concerns about loss of data, the ability to delete pages is restricted to system operators. As such, regular users will need to request a deletion from the system operators. For consistency and accountability, system operators also adhere to the guidelines listed here.

Guidelines for Deletion Requests

All Deletion Requests must contain the following information in order to be considered:

  • A link to the page in question. Preferably bolded for visibility. Note that Category and Image links need a colon at the front to turn them into links (ie [[:Category:Category]] and [[:Image:Image.jpg]]).
  • A reason for deletion. This should be short and to the point.
  • A signed datestamp. This can be easily done by adding ~~~~ to the end of your request.

In addition to placing a request on this page, please place the {{delete}} tag on the top of the page that is being recommended for deletion. Please make sure that the original content remains on the page, so that others can judge whether the page is worthy of deletion.

Any deletion request that does not contain these three pieces of information will not be considered, and will be removed by a system operator.

Once the deletion request has been entered, the request shall remain on this page, where it will be voted on for a period of two (2) weeks, as judged by the initial datestamp. At the conclusion of this two weeks, the appropriate action will be taken by a system operator, and at the end of that day the request will be moved into the Archive.

Certain types of pages may be better being scheduled for deletion in order to reduce the amount of red tape and stop this page getting too cluttered. To lodge a request for scheduled deletions, go to UDWiki:Administration/Deletions/Scheduling.

Deletion of pages that match a certain criteria may be better serviced by a request for a Speedy Deletion. Speedy Deletions are for removal of pages that are clearly of no value to the wiki, and do not incur the two week voting requirement. Speedy Deletion requests can be lodged at UDWiki:Administration/Speedy Deletions.

Speedy Deletion Eligibility

To be eligible for a Speedy Deletion Request, the page must fall under at least one of the following criteria:

  1. No Content: The page contains no more than a line or two of content that cannot clearly be expanded, consists of random or incoherent content, or is duplicated elsewhere to no purpose.
  2. Off-Topic: The page is a clearly off-topic page.
  3. Unused Redirect: The page is an unused or underused (ie, only 1-2 pages using the link) redirect.
  4. Empty Category: The page is a Category page that has no entries within it.
  5. Missed Talk Page: The page is a Talk: Page from a previous deletion request that has not been deleted with the request (please note the relevant deletion request if this is so)
As of 19 May 2010, Crit 5 is now a scheduled deletion.
  6. Deletion Workaround: The page is a duplicate of a page that has been deleted from a previous deletion request (please note the relevant deletion request if this is so). A page that fits this criterion is immediately qualified for deletion without requiring it be nominated on the 'Speedy Deletions' page. Recreating a page that fits this criterion will get you a polite message to stop doing so. Any further infractions of this nature will qualify as vandalism and will be treated as such. Note that criterion 6 does not apply when the page has been restored through Undeletions.
  7. Author Edit Only: The page has been requested for speedy deletion by the original author, and has been edited only by its author. Note that edits by adbots or vandals and reverts caused by them do not count.
  8. User Page: The page is a User subpage that has been requested for speedy deletion by the original author.
  9. Personal Page (Prefix Rule): The page is named after a user without the "User:" or "Journal:" prefixes and its content has been moved to the appropriate User or Journal page. Includes pages that should be User subpages, ie. in-game characters.
As of 2011, August 29, Crit 9 is now a scheduled deletion.
  10. Unused Template: The page is a template that has existed for at least one week and is currently unused within the wiki.
  11. Non-existent User Page: The page is a User: page for a user that doesn't exist, and any content on the page has been moved to the appropriate User: or Journal: page.
As of 20 June 2009, Crit 11 is now a scheduled deletion.
  12. Defunct group page: The page is a non-historical group page, it is over two months old, it has not had an update in a month, and is not on the stats page. Such pages will remain in the queue for 5 days to determine their defunct status has been correctly identified. Due to the large number of pages that fit into this criterion, please {{speedydelete12}} on the pages to ensure that they are categorized differently from normal speedy deletion requests.
As of 2007, September 16, this is no longer a valid criterion.
  13. Missed sub-page: The page is a sub-page from a previous deletion request that has not been deleted with the request, and that serves no individual purpose (please note the relevant deletion request).

A page may also fall under a scheduled deletion and should be posted here if it is missed by the sysops.

Guidelines for Voting on Deletion Requests

  • One vote per user.
  • Voting should take place underneath the request, and each vote should be started with a # with no empty lines inbetween votes.
  • There are four vote types:
    • Delete. For agreement with the deletion request
    • Merge. For indication that the content on the page should be merged with another page (includes an implicit Delete).
    • Speedy Delete. For indication that the page meets one of the Speedy Deletions Criteria (includes an implicit Delete).
    • Keep. For disagreement with the deletion request.
  • The specific vote keyword should be bolded within the lodged vote. Any relevant comments are also allowed, but these should not be bolded.
  • At least one Delete vote must be entered by the deadline in order for a page to be deleted. System operators may not use their own vote after the deadline to delete a page.
  • If more Delete votes are entered than Keep votes, the page will be deleted. In any other circumstance, the page is kept.
  • If 3 Speedy Deletes are lodged, and there are no Keep Votes, the page will be deleted as per Speedy Deletions.

Recent Actions

Scenteral Intelligence Map (and subpages) and Omnimap

The Scenteral Intelligence Map has not been substantively edited for at least two years, and its talk page gives similar evidence. The website (urbandead.info) from which the information is derived has also been down for a while (the last Wayback Machine record for sim.urbandead.info is August 2010). Given how the SIM is referenced on prominent pages (here and here), its broken state can confuse new Wiki users. Since it doesn't appear to be fixable, I nominate SIM for deletion.

I also nominate the other maps that rely on its data which are also broken, and affiliated pages:

This is a lot, and it's my first proposed deletion (and first action in the UDWiki:Administration space other than voting) so if I've horribly screwed up, please forgive me! Also, if these pages should be voted on separately, feel free to split them up. Bob Moncrief 22:33, 25 June 2012 (BST)

  1. Delete per above. I also offer to eliminate links to the maps and affiliated pages, to prevent a proliferation of redlinks. Bob Moncrief 22:33, 25 June 2012 (BST)

  4. Keep isn't there a way to keep it? at least for posterity--User:Sexualharrison01:32, 26 June 2012
  5. Keep - SIM and Omnimap were excellent creations and were great experiments of automated metadata making something that was usable for everyone. Did it work? For a while I guess, but even though it's long since dead I still love all this history being here- if only because if someone wants to pick up a similar project like this, reading this may give them a better understandings of the pros, cons, and issues SIM encountered before them. A template explaining that the project is dead wouldn't go amiss, but I'd avoid deleting it all from existence, especially since Swiers/Karek's sister website probably won't be coming back. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 02:53, 26 June 2012 (BST)
  6. Keep - the main page hasn't been edited for a year, should we delete that? We don't get rid of things just because we aren't actively using them.--Shortround }.{ My Contributions 09:14, 26 June 2012 (BST)
  7. Keep - I'm with the others on this one. We don't erase history. That said, adding notes where relevant to indicate that it's no longer active may be in order, since it can indeed be confusing for new users. Aichon 15:46, 26 June 2012 (BST)
Making things less confusing for new users is my goal. Would it be acceptable to remove the links to the maps on Suburb and Maps? That way new users won't be confused but everything will stay as a historical record. Bob Moncrief 16:08, 26 June 2012 (BST)
Suburb- definitely. Maps- perhaps add a section at the bottom called "defunct maps" and have SIM and Omni there? If not, yeah just remove it I'd say. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 16:13, 26 June 2012 (BST)
I've added notes on the relevant pages, removed them from Suburb and created a new "Historical Maps" section on Maps. What's the procedure for withdrawing a deletion nomination? Thanks so much! Bob Moncrief 16:36, 26 June 2012 (BST)
that fact that you were the only person that voted to delete the page. it's failed. shorty should be around any second to archive it.--User:Sexualharrison16:48, 26 June 2012
Yeah, by default it would simply get archived after two weeks, but since you've expressed an interest in withdrawing it, we can go ahead and archive it early. Aichon 19:14, 26 June 2012 (BST)

Withdrawn early. Aichon 19:16, 26 June 2012 (BST)

Massively out of date, and probably never used.

  1. Delete --Rosslessness 17:26, 31 May 2012 (BST)
  2. Delete - Unless there's interest in updating it, in which case I'll consider changing my vote. I used to prune it, but enough people yelled at me over pruning it that I eventually stopped bothering with it altogether. I'd love to see it pruned and made useful again. Aichon 17:37, 31 May 2012 (BST)
  3. Keep - Something being massively out of date and unused implies making it up to date and usable, unless making it so isn't doable. We should and would delete many wiki pages that are out of date and unused by the deletion request's argument–e.g. most location pages, and CP. I used it a few weeks ago to collect names. It's just a list of usernames. It's a place to look for users; this is a use, though it's not frequently used. --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 23:49, 1 June 2012 (BST)
Not since the system update it isn't. --Karekmaps 2.0?! 10:26, 3 June 2012 (BST)
Funnily enough, I used the User Hub list because it contained users who have not edited in a while, but their name was still left on the User Hub. (Special:ListUsers was impractical for this.) It might be better used, instead of a list of active users (which you point out is already supplied), as a list of "noteworthy" users. I don't think that anyone would care to do this, or that there'd be much point to it. --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 15:17, 3 June 2012 (BST)
  8. Delete - As boxy, it was mostly made out of a fit over DDR's user redirect deletion to shut them up. It's never really seen use or had one. I'm indifferent to it's existence which, for me, is enough for a delete when I can't find a single valid reason to have it at all. --Karekmaps 2.0?! 20:47, 1 June 2012 (BST)
  9. Keep/Clean it up -- Lets just delete everyone on there who hasn't edited the wiki for a certain amount of time or some other qualification. Since I do occasionally use it to find people as I'm sure other do.        03:34, 3 June 2012 (BST)
It's one thing to say that. It's another to do it. When my roommates and I were cleaning out the fridge awhile back, we had a tendency to say, "No, that's still good, don't throw it out," even though we never identified the owner. The next time we cleaned out the fridge, those things were still there, so we made a new rule: someone has to claim it, otherwise it'll just continue to rot and will need to be thrown out later. The same applies here. If someone wants to claim it and clean it, great, let's keep it. If no one will claim it and clean it up, then it will just continue to rot. Aichon 08:12, 3 June 2012 (BST)
Im currently deleting anyone without year '12 contribs. At this rate its going to be a very short list. --Rosslessness 10:00, 3 June 2012 (BST)

Welcomenewbie

{{Welcomenewbie}} is an oversized piece of crap which needs to be taken out back and shot. I'd have nominated it for A/SD as off topic (because something that fucking overdone is even more effective than standard boilerplate at putting people off from the wiki), but figured it should have its day in the sun. So, have at!

I'll be bringing in WikiMedia research data at some point when I'm less tired. Alternatively someone else can find the relevant Jorm quotes. ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾ 11:48, 22 May 2012 (BST)
  1. Delete – As above. ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾ 07:45, 22 May 2012 (BST)
  2. keep - Did you do this once before? May have been for something else. But this thing has thousands of transclusions and in my opinion just cannot be deleted outright. We should discuss how to facilitate the transition away from WN instead of simply deleting the one bit of it on a whim. That doesn't solve helping users. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 09:24, 22 May 2012 (BST)
    Nope. That was Nosubst.
As for how to transition? Firstly, write people relevant messages if you want to welcome them! A personalised message from a real person is far, far more effective than a boilerplate message, especially one as hideous as this one.
For the existing transclusions? Have The General's bot replace 'em with a link to something more useful. (Let's not even get into how welcome templates are not supposed to be transcluded, FFS!) Grr! Argh! *shaking fist* ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾ 11:48, 22 May 2012 (BST)
Yeah, see, even though it was nosubst last time, it's a similar issue I guess. As one of the only people who actually did write relevant messages to people to help them out (and was rightfully thanked for it on many occasions), I totally agree. But that's the initial step to the solution of removing WN. Removing the mess made is the middle step, deleting it is eventually the last. Much like what I imagine the fallout of the nosubst deletion vote was, in order to have a chance of getting this deleted I'd imagine you'd have to fulfil promises like using a bot to change the transclusions before putting the template up for deletion. that's what really convinces average anal-joes like me. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 12:41, 22 May 2012 (BST)

Switch them out for transclusions of Mediawiki:Welcomecreation, not for the template code plox. Otherwise it's kinda douchy to the users. --Karekmaps 2.0?! 02:21, 3 June 2012 (BST)
Waah waah waaaaah. System messages dont function like templates. Instead of some variable, the plain text "$1" would get passed through. Not a bad looking page as a template, though. Much better than the current welcome template. ~Vsig.png 17:09, 3 June 2012 (UTC)
  3. Keep - Although I agree that it can be a bit much for most newbies (I just glanced at it when Thad WN'd me), It can still be helpful at times (I just link to it in a personalized WN in case they want to look at it, for example). Plus what DDR said. -- †  talk ? f.u. 11:27, 22 May 2012 (BST)

  10. Speedy Even the project creator admits this only exists for spamming users to the point of vandalism. It's worthless and redundant since we already have a system message that does this without dropping a big steaming pile of worthless self indulgent spam on new users talk pages. "I appreciate you, now have this generic introduction of crap no one needs or wants to read through because to me you're only a +1." If you use this to welcome new users you are a horrible wikizen and should be escalated for vandalism just like MatthewFarenheit and Airborne88. --Karekmaps 2.0?! 11:32, 27 May 2012 (BST)
RE: Correction Full -> EXCERPT: Tl;dr?: You're right, he never admitted it. He just complained when one user was escalated for intentionally misusing it to the point of leaving the wiki in a mass of wiki drama. If a template's primary use is spamming then it's spam and there is a large multitude of proof that this is the only remaining purpose to Welcome Newbie as a project at least since Project Mentor and MediaWiki:Welcomecreation went live. Holding on to projectnewbie is holding on to the past for nostalgic, ill conceived, reasons. It shouldn't actually matter what MatthewFarenheit said having this at all is a bad idea lest someone start using it again. --Karekmaps 2.0?! 10:56, 28 May 2012 (BST)
