This page is for users to request System Operator status. The act of user promotion is restricted to those with bureaucrat status, and as such users will need to request user promotion here. System Operators and Bureaucrats cannot assign promotions unless the request has gone through this page.

Guidelines for System Operator Requests

Users who wish to request System Operator status (and users who wish to nominate other users for System Operator status) should note that before they can be considered the following guidelines should be met by the candidate:

  • Significant time within the community.
We define this as at least 6 months since the candidate's first edit.
Note: looking in a User's User contributions might give false results for this criterion, as the edit history is periodically purged on this wiki.
  • Significant activity within the community.
We define this as at least 250 edits in the past six months under the candidate's name.
Note: looking in a User's User contributions might give false results for this criterion, as the edit history is periodically purged on this wiki.
  • Prior interest in maintaining the community.
We define this as clear evidence that the candidate is already performing maintenance tasks and taking leadership roles on the wiki.
  • Desire to become a System Operator.
We define this simply as indicating in the candidate's request their desire for the position (Note that if a person is nominated by another user, the candidate in question should note their acceptance of the nomination).

If a user is highly exemplary in one criterion, a certain amount of leeway may be given with the other criteria.

Once the candidate satisfies these guidelines, the user is then subject to a community discussion. All users are asked to comment on the candidate in question, ask questions of the candidate, and discuss the candidate's suitability for becoming a System Operator. This is not a vote. It is instead merely a request for comments from the wiki community. This will continue for two weeks to allow all users an opportunity to voice their opinion regarding a candidate's qualifications for promotion. After two weeks, the Bureaucrats are responsible for announcing their decision within a reasonably short period of time. Users may continue to add their thoughts until the Bureaucrats announce their decision. The current amount of System Operators running should not influence your decisions when voicing your opinion.

Once the two weeks are up, the Bureaucrats will review the community discussion and make a decision based upon it. The user will be notified of the status of their request, and will be promoted should it appear that the community is willing to accept them as a System Operator.

Example Application

Example User

I've been around 3 months, and I've made to date 550 edits. As you can see [link here] and [link here], I've been in the leadership role attempting to create a new format for this page. I'd very much like to become a System Operator.

  • Vouch - I am willing to vouch for this user. -- Voucher 03:41, 23 Jan 2006 (GMT)
  • Against - Example User, I haven't seen any evidence of your work on the wiki. --Some user 19:01, 25 July 2006 (BST)
  • Vouch - Example User is the most active guy here. --Another user 19:01, 25 July 2006 (BST)
  • Abstain - I'm just not sure, but I don't want to say why for some reason. --Some other user 19:01, 25 July 2006 (BST)
  • Question - I just want to know what you think about this subject? --Yet another user 21:26, 4 April 2013 (BST)

Candidates Being Discussed

Stelar

Hey guys, with most of the sysops less active nowadays (myself included), it's about time we punished someone with a promotion, and I know exactly the right person for the job.

If you've taken a glance at Recent Changes in, oh, the last three years, you're likely already aware of Stelar's incredible work in keeping thousands of DangerReports updated. And while the sheer volume of her contributions is immensely impressive, what's even more amazing is the humility with which she's gone about them tirelessly for so long. She's never demanded recognition. Instead, she's simply done it with an "I just want to help make things better" attitude.

Beyond that, her work with Radio Malton and adding details to stub locations on the wiki has helped to add some much-needed color to the game. As the leader of two successful groups—one breathing, the other not—she doesn't play any favorites. And while the rest of us have been treating the wiki as a dying archive of a bygone era, Stelar has been experimenting with new ideas, which is exactly the sort of activity we need around here.

As an added plus, she's an Aussie, which helps us with our coverage across more time zones.

And really, someone who's active and aware is what we could use most right now. While wiki drama may not be gone for good, it isn't an important factor in how the wiki currently operates. Instead, what we need are even-keeled sysops who can respond to the infrequent situations that unexpectedly come around...like a few weeks ago when the wiki's login system broke, locking many of us out of our accounts. If you blinked and missed that happening, guess who you have to thank? Stelar. She realized the problem and coordinated people to get it fixed quickly.

If for some reason you haven't had a chance to get to know Stelar through the wiki or NecroConnect, I'd encourage you to take this opportunity to ask questions of her. I expect you'll discover that she's exactly as polite, humble, and helpful as I've painted her to be, and that she'd be a welcome addition to the sysop team.

Also, I told her I was planning to nominate her, so I expect that she'll be along sometime later today to confirm that she is indeed interested in the position.

Aichon 15:40, 13 May 2017 (UTC)

Er... many hours later today it seems. Guess that's how it goes when you live in upsidedownland! But anyway, I accept the nomination :) stelar (talk) 01:09, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
  • Vouch - See above. Aichon 15:41, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
  • Vouch She is a girl --User:Sexualharrison17:12, 13 May 2017
  • Vouch I invite you to explain why you are obeying these rules constitutes a difference with Cheese's rules explains the difference between what you're saying and precedence's example. -- Adward  17:39, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
Cheese rules? Of course it does. Always obey the cheese. Only a crazy person would monkey around with other rules. stelar (talk) 07:40, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
  • Question Are you OK with me asking several questions? Bob Moncrief EBDW! 04:51, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
Does that count as one towards your several? Maybe I'm more like a genie and you can only be granted three? stelar (talk) 07:40, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
Hope you're a generous genie, 'cuz I've almost certainly got more than three. Question What is something you plan to do if you're given sysop powers? Bob Moncrief EBDW! 07:45, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
Maybe yes, maybe no :P Aside from being all "ooooh buttons!"? I am sure there are pages that should be moved or deleted, or other janitorial type things to be done, but beyond that, it would mostly be learning how to use them appropriately to begin with. I think it is also important to note, that as Aichon mentioned above, that a lot of the sysops aren't as active on the wiki. I am on the wiki most days, if not every day, which means I am more likely to see and then subsequently be able to correct, anything that happens that would require sysop powers. stelar (talk) 20:38, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
Question A bureaucrat election period has ended, and the vote is 8-7-7-2. What happens? Bob Moncrief EBDW! 11:43, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
The votes have caused a tie between two candidates and if this happens, the current sitting bureaucrats are to decide between the tied candidates. stelar (talk) 12:10, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
Yep! Question Do you have thoughts on the current all-male composition of the sysop team? Bob Moncrief EBDW! 12:25, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
You all get the job done, so there's no issue there. However, in any situation where people work together, it's generally good to have a balance of some sort between male and female. Both genders think and react differently, so to have a differing point of view can be a good thing. stelar (talk) 13:11, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
Question What is something UD-related, whether on the wiki or not, you are most proud of? Bob Moncrief EBDW! 17:48, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
I think if we're talking wiki-related, it would be the word I did with Peralta on providing an alternate suburb page for East Becktown. A lot of work went into that, and the outcome was really great. Game-wise it would be leading two successful groups that are able to maintain a presence on the Stats page. stelar (talk) 05:22, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
Question I know you've been operating on Discord with some of your groups. Do you think creating a UDWiki Discord, to supplement/replace the UDWiki IRC, is a good idea? If so, would you assist me with it? Bob Moncrief EBDW! 17:16, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
I think since a lot of groups are using discord and moving away from IRC, I think a UDWiki Discord is probably not a bad idea. I am sure a lot of people aren't or weren't aware that there is a UDWiki IRC (I know you've had it on your userpage), so if it were something to happen, there would need to be something on the front page to show it is there. Probably in the resources link on the sidebar. And of course I would assist you with it. We're on opposing timezones, so there would generally be coverage throughout the entire day. stelar (talk) 07:23, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
Someone will always use IRC -- Spiderzed 09:18, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
Cool, thanks! Oh, and one last Question — Just to make sure, are you me? Bob Moncrief EBDW! 16:33, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
Well, we all now know I'm not Yonnua. But Bob, you know we're all you. Even when you were 'dead' everyone was still you. stelar (talk) 12:29, 26 May 2017 (UTC)
Thanks! That's it for my questions. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 21:57, 26 May 2017 (UTC)
  • Vouch My girlfriend is in her zombie group and tells me she's a good choice. --Dr. Guedner (talk) 11:51, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
  • Vouch--Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 22:29, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
When I e-mailed her to say I was going to nominate her, I actually added, "P.S. If it turns out that you're Yonnua pulling the wool over our eyes yet again, kudos to you." So, seeing you vouch here is rather reassuring. ;) Aichon 16:39, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
  • What changes, if any, would you like to see for the wiki? --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 02:17, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
I think the main page for the wiki is a bit tired. I started playing Urban Dead at the end of 2007, and from what I can remember, the main page is virtually the same. That's almost 10 years ago. I know that UD isn't the most popular game anymore, but there are still new people joining, and the first thing they see on the wiki is the same thing we all did years ago. A revamp of some sort could encourage more people to use the wiki or get involved in the community. Even though it's "just a wiki", it is a massive source of information for new and old players, and it's something that has continued to be useful even as the population of the game has decreased. The "all news" banner across the top I feel should be more either more inclusive to other game-related news, or be removed entirely. Right now it's advertising something that happened almost two years ago and is the first thing you see when you load the page. Not exactly welcoming to those discovering the game or the wiki for the first time! stelar (talk) 20:38, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
Certainly the game news item on the main page makes the game look dead. I do think you'd have more success attempting a larger revamp of the main page than I did in 2009. Give it a go, if you'd like Biggrin.gif --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 02:15, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
  • Vouch - I do not know how Stelar would deal with drama or more complicated technical issues, but she is active and dedicated to the wiki, which is more than can be said of some current sys-ops. And in the current dusk of Urban Dead where just being around and maintaining things is in higher demand than innovation. Just try it out, with the shallow pool of ops we currently have we can't afford not to. -- Spiderzed 07:26, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
  • Vouch— I could swear I killed, ate, or maybe just stabbed you recently? also, for the record, there basically isn't a #UDWiki IRC any more, since I'm usually the only one there and anyone who joins never sticks around long enough for a conversation. ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾ You rated this wiki '1'! Great job, go hog wild!|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| 09:05, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
Maybe you have? Depends where you've been, I have a few alts around the city. So people do at least go onto the IRC? I don't think I ever have. stelar (talk) 10:39, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
I think I might have stabbded you in MCM, only I just remembered that was a sekrit alt so SSSHHH!!!!! (Sorry I couldn't shoot you, I only so many AP/so much ammo.) And it used to be pretty active with usually a quorum of sysops present (for cabal purposes [There Is No Kabal]), but not really used in years. Frankly I’m impressed Jorm keeps the server alive so long after the closure of Nexus War. ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾ You rated this wiki '1'! Great job, go hog wild!|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| 10:22, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
I used to hang out there all the time too, but have found it totally empty (other than you, of course, Rev) the past couple years. Once my group that was organizing there migrated, I haven't remembered to log in. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 16:33, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
  • Question Who's the worst sysop in UDwiki history? Rosslessness ; the shambling custodian of UD's past... 21:11, 26 May 2017 (UTC)
Depends on how you define 'worst'. One could say that Bob was the worst for disappearing without a trace for a year. Or Yonnua for essentially tricking everyone. Or those that followed strict rules, and were overzealous about things. Or those who had misconduct cases against them. Or those that were given the position but only really showed up when all the drama was going on. It's obviously been a wild ride throughout the years, and each sysop has brought their own uniqueness to the wiki. And besides, if someone is the 'worst' sysop, they were allowed to be because they were given the sysop role by the community. stelar (talk) 14:02, 28 May 2017 (UTC)
Nice. I would have also accepted Grim or Thad (obviously).--Rosslessness ; the shambling custodian of UD's past... 19:46, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
hey! at least one of the Bob's was a good psyop! (i miss you Hammero) --hagnat 11:30, 9 June 2017 (UTC)

The two-week period for comments and questions has concluded. Ross and I will make a decision shortly. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 17:21, 28 May 2017 (UTC)

After a brief discussion, congratulations! You've been promoted to sysop. Welcome to the team! Bob Moncrief EBDW! 11:48, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
It should be noted that as part of the decision any future impropriety by Stelar will result in Aichon being immediately promoted to Bureaucrat. --Rosslessness ; the shambling custodian of UD's past... 19:45, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
