User:The General

Since he had badly going RE due to inactivity a year ago (which were only short-circuited due to self-requested demotion), he has made a great return and stemmed a lot of grunt work, including cleaning up various pages and detecting missed scheduled protections in the suggestions system. As for leadership roles, he has started the signature policy discussion, showing awareness of current issues on the opinion pages. I think he deserves a chance to show once more for some months if he can handle the job. -- Spiderzed 21:25, 4 May 2011 (BST)

Accepted.--The General T U! P! F! 23:04, 4 May 2011 (BST)
Given some of the comments on this bid, I feel the need to elaborate on why I haven't waited longer: the reason is that I'm seeing things which I'd like to get but require sysop permissions to do. For example, I requested protection of a bunch of suggestions pages on May 4th and it's only been protected today. I'd also like to go through all the deletions archives and fix all the broken links so they don't clog up Special:Wantedpages. Currently, the protection requests are being double-handled and I don't feel I can really put in a request for a sysop to go through 60 pages of archives in order to fix a bunch of broken links.--The General T U! P! F! 12:35, 9 May 2011 (BST)
A note to those looking at my contributions list: It would probably also be a good idea to take a look at the contributions of my bot because, while those edits are essentially automated, the scripts behind them often represent hours of work in coding and bugfixing.--The General T U! P! F! 20:37, 18 May 2011 (BST)
  • Vouch - see bid. -- Spiderzed 21:25, 4 May 2011 (BST)
  • Strong Vouch - The General has, imo, always been a strong member of the team. When I first came to the wiki, he was already quite inactive, but by his first evaluation, the few edits I'd seen him make won me over. Even when he was making relatively few edits, he was making fantastic ones. Now, he's making lots of edits. If he can keep it up without burning out again, then he'll be by far one of the greatest assets to the team.--Yonnua Koponen T G P ^^^ 21:41, 4 May 2011 (BST)
Fantastic edits. EPIC, REVOLUTIONARY edits. The kind of edits that only come along once in a lifetime. Now...combine that with LOTS OF EDITS and you get, and I'm not ashamed to say it, THE greatest UD Wiki asset of all time.
Holy shit, Yonnua, what is this crap? Some kind of mutual masturbation thing? Or do you just like having your head lodged in people's asses?-- | T | BALLS! | 23:58 4 May 2011(UTC)

  • Weak Against - Too soon. He's been here less than a month. Sure he's done more grunt work in that month than I generally do in a year, I applaud him for doing so but in that short time-span I can't say how long that will last, how he is in admin pages, I just barely know the guy and I'm not sure if he knows the community well enough himself. He's doing great now, so keep going. What's the rush? -- Cat Pic.png Thadeous Oakley Talk 21:45, 4 May 2011 (BST)
Just wanted to (sorta) address (part of) this point: My opinion is that Sysop rulings should be made based on the facts of the case at hand rather than any past history with the user, and so I do not believe that familiarity with the user should be required in order to make a fair decision.--The General T U! • Vouch - Has enough technical knowledge of both the wiki and the internet. I appreciate when another user understands IPs enough that them having access to Special:Checkuser is actually useful. Not to mention he's always been willing to discuss his rulings and give users a chance when he's actually been around.--Karekmaps 2.0?! 22:37, 4 May 2011 (BST)
  • Against - Sysop team doesn't need another mindless cypher that will only be another reinforcement vote for the herd mentality bloc. If he doesn't just fall off the face of the earth again after getting the feather in his cap.-- | T | BALLS! | 22:41 4 May 2011(UTC)
  • Very Strong Against - Guy went around correcting typos on 2-year-old postings just so he could get to 500 edits. No. No fucking way. That is not the action of someone who should be an admin. That is the action of a psychotic who should be as far removed from power as is humanly possible. The problem is the fact you're only doing it to get promoted, which is simultaneously pathetic and also a reason for you not to get promoted. --カシュー, ザ ゾンビ クィーン (ビープ ビープ) Katthewsigtag.gif @ 23:17, 4 May 2011 (BST)
No, I'm doing it to procrastinate from doing what I'm actually meant to be doing (I.e. Working) and because badly written pages irritate me. My question is: What am I supposed to be doing here if it's not the low-profile maintenance tasks that no one else has the time/inclination to do?--The General T U! P! F! 23:47, 4 May 2011 (BST)
  • Very Strong Against - Anyone the rest of the sysops will vouch for is obviously unsuited for the spot. • Questions:
    1. In what areas of the wiki do you most see yourself contributing as an op?
    2. What made you take a break from the wiki and what has changed since then? ~Vsig.png Amurica. Fuck. Yeah 14:30, 5 May 2011 (UTC)
  • Answers:
    1. In all honesty, the main thing for which I will be using the Sysop permission is in cleaning up all the broken links in the A/SD archives, ensuring the all scheduled protections and deletions have been fulfilled, and in tidying up the suggestions archives. To give an example of something where I could be useful: I recently put up a requestion for all pages in a category to be protected, which is naturally taking some time; I have script which could do this as a batch-run. Other than that, I would obviously be ruling on A/VB cases where necessary and fulling requests on the admin pages.
    2. I basically burnt out after spending 4 years as a sysop on the wiki, during much of which I wasn't actually playing the game: I progressively became less involved in actually contributing to the wiki until I was logging in purely to check the Administration pages. I never really made a concious decision to take a break from the wiki until my second A/RE, at which point I made the decision to leave as I was not longer really interested in the game of the wiki.
Well, I've spent some time working on other projects (including spending some time on Wikipedia) and I think my judgement has improved significantly. I've taught myself a couple of programming languages (PHP, javascript and python), which I've used to write my bots and update UDTool. I've also started playing the game again as a member of Red Rum, so I actually have an interest in the wiki beyond merely maintaining it.--The General T U! P! F! 10:44, 7 May 2011 (BST)
Good deal. I spent some time looking through you misconduct log and saw a lot of drama in 2006. It seems like you were dragged into a lot of it but some probably could have been avoided. It sounds to me like you're more interested in the maintenace side of things which is where I think you should focus. More Queue Queue and less QQ. That's what we need. ~Vsig.png 16:42, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, a lot of the drama could probably have been avoided if I had stopped to gain concensus before acting. My priorities have now changed from "is there anything new on A/VB" to "is there any new task that I can persuade my bot to do?"--The General T U! P! F! 12:39, 11 May 2011 (BST)

  • Weak Against - As DDR. Broadly speaking, The General is one of the good sysops we've had. However, towards the end of his last term, there were definitely a few rulings where he seemed to come out of left field, which I believe was because he was mostly inactive and had lost context for making decisions. If he's active again and can demonstrate that he'll maintain his activity, he's a useful person to have on the team, but waiting a little longer would be nice. Aichon 06:20, 9 May 2011 (BST)
  • Against, for now - Never had any constructive relations with him, always drama. Its possible he's changed for the better, more activity would go far in showing that. --Zod Rhombus 02:54, 11 May 2011 (BST)
I believe would be because anything involving the CDF back then would inevitably result in drama (though that wasn't actually the CDF's fault). So yeah, most times I go involved with you were due to drama but I wouldn't say I was the cause and I was always attemping to help.--The General T U! P! F! 11:54, 11 May 2011 (BST)
  • Vouch - Because I figure it's too late for my vote to negatively affect anything. :) Way back in the day he was one of the very, very few SysOps with a cool and clear head about things. That alone makes him a good candidate. Add in the rest and you're good to go. Plus I kind of want to get on his good side so he makes a bot that subtly steers every conversation toward the topic of Amazing. -- Amazing(UD + WTF = HR) 20:22, 11 May 2011 (BST)
