It's almost as if the Malton Incident gave my life meaning. I didn't have a job, I wasn't at university, and I wasn't spending my life in a way that society expected. I adhered to political beliefs on a whim, once describing myself as a ''entropic anarchist'', without even professing any thoughts on the subject.

I didn't know what I was going to do with my life. I was leeching off of my best friend Telina Juzyk, a part-time secretary for NecroTech. She wasn't earning much... for a while.

== A Brief History of My Life ==
A few days before the Malton Incident, Telina received an extra £5,000 and was advised to take a vacation as quickly as possible. This perked my interests. I knew that something had to be going on. NecroTech was just a bioengineering company, focusing on the effects of bacterial pathogens, that had a suspiciously large number of office blocks in Malton - but they weren't anything that hit the news often.

The Malton archives told me nothing that I did not already know - that NecroTech's public ambitions were for cures to terminal diseases like cancer and AIDS. Something peculiar - and rather frightful - about NecroTech's media history was that ''every single campaign for transparency or protest against their methods had been silenced.'' All of them. Bribery was the more common way to guarantee silence, but sometimes, '''kidnaps''' were used to bring an end to the outcries.

My investigations brought me to the publicly-unthinkable conclusion that NecroTech was acting on behalf - or perhaps, under its own orders - as a malignant entity, disguised as a corporation that worked for good.

Is it any shock that the next day, life and death became - at least, for Malton's populace - almost the same thing?

Something to ponder while you build your barricade or devour an arm.
