  • (Since his first death, inquiries as to the significance of the epigraph on his axe result in clear annoyance, followed by an abrupt change of subject.)

  • His father, Colm Finnegan, a third-generation Irish-American, was a fan of Irish ballads and James Joyce and named his son Timothy, much to the boy's chagrin. Years of jokes about his namesake have caused him to develop a facial spasm at the mere mention of the song or the novel, which led his fellow firemen to call him Twitch. Ironically, this eased his embarrassment, as it gave him some small relief from his father's thoughtless choice.
    • Timothy Finnegan grew up in a five-story tenement that was demolished in 1989 to make way for what would become the Chudley Building. (Finnegan had moved to Pashenton a year earlier. His reply to the news: "Good.") His father was a beat cop for Roachtown PD; though he was one of the rare RPD cops not entangled in corruption, he was a thuggish presence on the streets. Though Colm loved Tim and his sister Molly, he was a small, petty, distant man at home, an example that his son was determined not to emulate. At the age of 18, Tim applied to Cocker Boulevard Fire Station but failed to meet the physical requirements. His father liked the idea, but was too mired in his own troubles to be of much help. The love and encouragement of his younger sister, Molly, gave him the fortitude to spend the next year training to pass the next physical. Molly escaped during the evacuation, but their father, still living in Roachtown, was missing. Timothy promised to find him, and missed the last fire truck leaving Cocker Boulevard before the quarantine came down. Now he is trapped in Malton, hoping to save a man he loathes to keep a promise to his beloved sister.
