NPOV gets talked about a lot on suburb pages, and its never nice to have your comment shunted off to a talk page or worse. So, to clarify here is a quick summary on NPOV.

Firstly it stands for Neutral Point of View.

An explanation

Like news reports should be, a NPOV comment should not try to force an opinion on the reader.

Remember there are many groups in the game. Zombies, Survivors, Pk'ers, Gk'ers, Death cultists and others. Your comments cannot be an attack against any of these groups.

The comment should be factual, and if controversial, evidence should be provided, for example a linked Iwitness shot.

Here's an example of something thats has a biased point of view, and isn't what's generally considered newsworthy.

January 19th 2008

I have arived in pegtown, I will now decimate the eval, stinking zombies who stand in my way and will garentee the safety of this area for ever. Already today I kill 18 zombies.--RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 13:55, 19 January 2008 (UTC)|

Problems with the above.

A lot.

This is not news about the suburb. Its about one person, his aims and claims. Very few people will find this relevant. Few individuals ever merit a mention on a page. No one knows how long they will be there, and their contribution will have little or no impact.

It is in the first person, and is full of opinion. Avoid the use of "I" or "we" unless no other option is avaliable. The zombies are called amomgst other things stinking. The news section is not the place to trade insults.

Claims

Note the outlandish claims. How can one person keep a surburb safe forever? It is an uncertainty or a personal belief and therefore not NPOV. Remember. You will not be on the Urban Dead Wiki forever.

Spelling. As usual watch the spelling.

Other common POV mistakes.

Commenting on others

Writing in character can be a problem. To paraphrase a recent example which caused much debate.

  • Now that more skilled survivors have entered the suburb, the mall has been secured by survivors.

The above is actually a derogatory comment about other players only sweetened by a note about the mall. This is not a positive edit.

Look at the group in question. More people leave or enter a suburb everyday. Almost any groups arrival is not newsworthy, the exception would be the arrival of a large number of players (100+). See below.

NPOV

Examples of more NPOV comments.

" The Second Big Bash has moved to the suburb. More information is avaliable on their group page. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 14:36, 19 January 2008 (UTC)"

One of the few examples where a groups arrival is newsworthy. When a group of 300+ zombies under a common leadership arrive in your home it is newsworthy. Also An apparent fact & very easy to check via the link to their page.

"Over 200 zombies are attacking the Nix Building. See the necronet scans on the buildings page.--RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 14:36, 19 January 2008 (UTC)"

A basic fact. With a link to evidence. Notice there are no calls for reinforcemnts or an explanation on how the survivors are winning.

"Members of the The Assassin's Order a Pk'er group have been shooting people at Calvert Mall.--RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 14:36, 19 January 2008 (UTC)"

Note no judgement on whether it is acceptable to PK. The assasins order can legitimately be called a player killing as they are listed in that category on the wiki.
