Howdy, you have stumbled across my talk page! If you want to leave a comment, please put it in the appropriate section using a Lv. 3 header (===Header===). You can also add a new section with the + key, and I will move it myself, but I prefer you use the first way. Whether the conversation stays here or moves back and forth between two talk pages is completely up to you.

BIC: Update Status

This is for keeping track of major edits to the BIC, both by others and myself. Please do NOT edit this section.

The Project

I have taken it upon myself to create a BIC for every suburb in Malton (67 of them didn't seem to have one when I started).

  • Top two rows done! Only 56 more to go!--Red Hawk One 09:05, 5 July 2009 (BST)
  • 53 left, quite a few of these mid-city suburbs are rather lacking in details.--Red Hawk One 05:27, 6 July 2009 (BST)
  • Working on Stats reports on the side, I have all fire stations A-H done. On a side note, I think I've got this signature working.--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 20:27, 6 July 2009 (BST)
  • A danger report has been filed for every fire station in Malton.--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 06:54, 7 July 2009 (BST)
  • Woo-hoo, halfway! (50 suburbs down). Chudleyton was a real mess, but other than that, this seems to be getting easier. A quick check at the danger report categories shows that most Hospitals and Police departments have reports, so it should be mostly smooth sailing from here.--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 08:33, 7 July 2009 (BST)
  • The color red is slowly creeping across the city... Is it the return of a mega-horde like The Dead? No! It's the BIC- Coming to a suburb near you. Top four rows are done, with most danger reports out of the way things are moving along pretty quickly, although some suburbs are still pretty bare (such as the (in)famous Dunell Hills).--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 00:29, 8 July 2009 (BST)
  • Ending the day with 70 complete BICs.--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 06:55, 8 July 2009 (BST)
  • It's done, a Building Information Center has been filed for each suburb. it was hard work (I still cannot believe I finished in a mere 4.5 days!), but it's there to stay. A big shout out to all the contributors:
  • The Status Reporters, for coming up with the idea first and doing the NE and NW.
  • Red Hawk One (myself) for picking up the project and updating 50+ suburbs and countless reports.
  • Rorybob, for linking each suburb to the BIC, updating southern Malton, and making a BIC template.
BICTemplate.png Bldg. Info Center
This user supports the BIC
  • The countless other users who have created and maintained BIC pages and Danger reports.

Without the contributions of these people, it would have never been done (or at least would have taken the forecasted two weeks). That out of the way, there is still a bit of work to be done- uniforming, categorizing, aesthetics- it will be even more thankless from this point, but someone's gotta do it. ~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 08:16, 9 July 2009 (BST)

Aftermath

  • Minor aesthetic improvements, including the below image from Sunil.~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 22:58, 9 July 2009 (BST)

Left

  • Rorybob and The Rooster are creating status maps for the buildings listed in the BIC. They have completed:
A hospital map
A police department map

Great job Rorybob and The Rooster!--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 20:52, 21 July 2009 (BST)

  • Uniforming the SIB pages (4/10) by removing creator sigs and adding factory listings. Rorybob is currently writing up listings for all the factories. Quite a daring task!--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 03:53, 23 July 2009 (BST)
  • The Rooster strikes! As we speak his amazing army of bots is filling in reports for all report less buildings.--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 20:14, 26 July 2009 (BST)

Location pages

  • Breaking apart grouped TRP pages into individual location pages.--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 11:49, 16 August 2009 (BST)
  • Rooster reminds me to clear out incoming links before throwing the grouped pages on the chopping block; this slightly complicates things. Nine done.--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 06:55, 17 August 2009 (BST)
  • Five more groups split up.--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 06:40, 19 August 2009 (BST)
  • After a month-long hiatus from this project, I'm back and have unmerged all Carparks. In my absence, Maps has dilligently carried on the work. Kudos, Maps!--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 05:26, 28 September 2009 (BST)
  • Since The Rooster has gone on hiatus, his bots has also gone inactive, and no longer maintain the BIC. This is unacceptable. Meet Marked Unknown (kudos Rooster for all your hard work. Please come back soon- I think I'm getting carpel tunnel).--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 02:50, 14 October 2009 (BST)

You're crazy. Lol. I tried an idea like that once. The Status Reporters. --Haliman - Talk 04:21, 6 July 2009 (BST)
Fortunately for me, I already had 33 suburbs knocked out of the gate, and plenty of reports to use as templates. It's going to be time consuming, but I think I could have this done solo in 2-4 weeks. Sooner if a few people would be willing to help with writing up danger reports. (Stupid fire departments :/)--Red Hawk One 04:26, 6 July 2009 (BST)
P.S. For anyone who cares about the method to this madness, I'm working from the top-right to the bottom-left, making sure that all Hospitals, Fire Stations, Police Departments, and NTs have reports, then creating a Building Information Center for the suburb with all of the above plus phone masts, malls, and landmarks (mansions, cathedrals, stadiums, etc).--Red Hawk One 04:34, 6 July 2009 (BST)
I got the NE corner. Well, TSR did. --Haliman - Talk 05:17, 6 July 2009 (BST)
I noticed. You guys really saved me some time there. Thanks! Also, would you mind if I "borrowed" your map to chart my progress? --Red Hawk One 05:27, 6 July 2009 (BST)
Go ahead, mate. TSR is dead. My main focus is on the UBCS now. YOU SHOULD SO TOTALLY JOIN. --Haliman - Talk 07:04, 6 July 2009 (BST)
Thanks for the clearance. And as tempting as your offer is, I'm afraid Santlerville is a long commute from Rhodenbank.--Red Hawk One 07:07, 6 July 2009 (BST)

Great job creating all those suburb information centers and building danger reports. I had to change your navbar to fit the other resource pages, and I created a map linking to all the suburb center pages, so it would be easier to find them. Still, if you had not made the initial push, this would never have happen. Good job --People's Commissar Hagnat [talk] [wcdz] 13:13, 10 July 2009 (BST)

Cookie.jpg A FREE COOKIE

Ideally I am hoping to model the BIC page on Necrowatch, but until then your navbar modification looks quite a bit easier to use. Thanks for that map thing as well, I can't believe I didn't think of that! Mmmm, cookie... ~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 20:39, 10 July 2009 (BST)

I just noticed that several suburb information centers have been signed. While I (and the community) appreciate the work and effort of creating such pages, since they are supposed to belong to the community they shouldn't be signed by the user who created them. Could you please remove them ? --People's Commissar Hagnat [talk] [wcdz] 02:13, 23 July 2009 (BST)

No problem

No problem, I just need to make the Building Information pages once I have finished with the suburb pages. D: That'll be a pain, but it'll make the wiki a better place I'm sure. Congrats on thinking it up, by the way. :)

--RahrahCome join the #party!21:51, 7 July 2009 (BST)
Righty; I've linked up all the suburbs (fingers crossed I've got them all, and dealt with the No-NT suburbs correctly), so now we have to make the TRP report templates, put them in the BIC's and we're done? :D --RahrahCome join the #party!22:16, 7 July 2009 (BST)
Ah yes, must remember to do that. Also, thanks for editing Buttonville's BIC to include Buckley, I forgot. That's an interesting map,(the one on your talk page) is it recently updated? And thanks about the template :D ----RahrahCome join the #party!19:37, 8 July 2009 (BST)
That's good! I'm currently working on a Malton-wide TRP/Mall/Suburb status map, located here. It'd be great if you could help. Adding in the TRPs, copy and paste one that was done before, like :<div style="position: absolute; left: 25px; top: 17px"> {|{{User:DangerReport/Dovey Boulevard Fire Station|template=StatusMap Formatter}}| |}</div> and replace the "left" with the x co-ordinate, times 8, then add one. Do the same for "top" but for the y co-ordinate. Then replace the name of the TRP where the name is present. --RahrahCome join the #party!08:44, 13 July 2009 (BST)

Yeah, the one at the moment is a PD one. It's not a problem, it was a simple thing; and Rooster has offered to make one using his bot. :) The problem is, when I use {{StatusMap PD}} on a page, it breaks. Strange. The template breaks, that is.

I suppose what would be a good thing to do now is to try and spread the word, get some big groups using the BIC, like the DEM and MOB, things like that. :) --RahrahCome join the #party!}20:09, 21 July 2009 (BST)

Stuff

Good work with the suburb Building Information Center whatnot. --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 04:43, 10 July 2009 (BST)

Agree. Just wondering, did you do all of this by hands? Or, more appropriately, with a bot? -- Kittithaj 16:22, 11 July 2009 (BST)
By hand (I wouldn't even know how to find or program a bot anyways). I had about 5-8 tabs running at all times, and kept copying and pasting the necessary info. It was mostly smooth sailing (turning out a report/listing per minute), but there were quite few times where I would have to go in and write up something completely by hand. I'm not completely sure a bot could have patched those holes. Besides, I actually kind of enjoyed filing all those reports.~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 20:42, 11 July 2009 (BST)
Wow. You are really diligent. If you need help with bot-assisted automated updating, try asking The Rooster. -- Kittithaj 15:26, 13 July 2009 (BST)

Danger Reports

Man, I think you need to reorg some of those headers, it's all a bit haphazard concerning the BIC and reports and whatnot.

Anyway, no problem with the danger reports. I created every last possible one. I also churned out Status Maps for every building type. You can see them on each subcategory of Category:Building Danger Levels if you're interested.

Can I ask you take a look through Category:Danger Reports and its subcategories for any errors, particularly with regards to the BIC category which I also messed with.

Ongoing discussion regarding all this is spread over many user talk pages, but there is a little centralized stuff on my page if you want to mention anything important there.

Thanks for the help. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 01:50, 30 July 2009 (BST)

I did not see anything wrong with the categories (granted, I only scanned over them). I'm curious, is there any way to organize the nameless buildings (junkyards, factories, etc.) by a different method, such as by suburb? Alphabetically is a little hard to find the particular building you're looking for.
As for the goofy headers, I'm planning on remodeling the page, ideally modeling it off of Necrowatch.--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 06:00, 30 July 2009 (BST)
Aye the sort key's could be changed, but to what? If we sorted them by suburb all the "S" suburbs would show up under one section, etc. Could always come up with a code system using the 52 letters (upper and lower case). A=suburb a and b, B=Suburb c etc. Alternatively I could key based on co-ords and pad the zeros so we get ten sections, each one representing a "column" of Malton... I'm just throwing ideas about here, I agree that sorting them all under one heading is a bit useless. Any other thoughts?
On a semi-related note, I had to muck about with you sig as the pipes were interfering in the danger report templates, causing some of the sig and the timestamp to be cut off. I even threw in some tag fixes so it's a bit nicer to edit, hope you don't mind. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 22:09, 30 July 2009 (BST)

I've thought it over some more, and I realize there's actually a lot of building's that have useless keys.

  • Churches and Cathedrals all start with "St.", so that should be ignored.
  • Clubs and Forts all start with a prefix naming them as such, so that should be ignored.
  • Hospitals are either "St." something or something "General", should St. be ignored?
  • The co-ord ones: Factory, Junkyard, Warehouse.

What do you think about the hospitals, it's sorta 60:40 in favour of St. from the looks of the Category: Hospital Danger Levels. Would people prefer St. ungrouped given the fact there are other things in order anyway, would they expect "St." under "S" in such a case?

The co-ords, I'm thinking either by their number (so 0-9, for ten "columns") or, and here's a thought, by district (NW-5, SE-2 etc). Would districts be a good idea? They'd need a code to work though A=NW-1, B=NW-2, etc. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 03:08, 26 August 2009 (BST)

I think it would be best to leave the hospitals as "St. Such-and-such" under the "s" header. Most people I've seen refer to them like that, so categorizing them by their second word might throw these people off. As for the co-ord pages, I like the idea of arranging them in columns; the district one sounds like it could get complicated, although I'm not completely sure what you mean by that. Care to elaborate?--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 03:29, 26 August 2009 (BST)
Also, before I forget, is it possible to link the squares on the status maps to their corresponding danger reports? (i.e. the square on the NT status map corresponding with The Blackmore Building would link to User:DangerReport/The Blackmore Building).--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 03:34, 26 August 2009 (BST)
We arrange them by districts, so any junkyards for example in the NW-1 district would be sorted under "A" (like so: [[Category:Junkyard Danger Levels|A, Junkyard X,Y]]), any in the NW-2 district would be sorted under "B" etc. It might be confusing, and I guess the sorting by co-ords is probably the better option.
It could be done. Say like the x's on the map on the TRP page. However, I fear that would stress the inclusion limits. It might double the code on each map page. Those pages would still work of course, but including them, anywhere would likely make everything fail horribly. Besides, all those links make the load time much nastier. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 03:51, 26 August 2009 (BST)
Yeah, arranging them by districts would probably necessitate posting the district map on the page as well (and even at that, the districts seem kind of non-sequitur), so I'd say stick with the coordinates. As for the maps, it's a bummer to hear that, but based off what you're saying it sounds like leaving them alone is for the best.--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 04:02, 26 August 2009 (BST)

Revive Point Updaters

Are these being done by the BIC? Because I'm doing them at the moment, trying to make Suburb pages look more uniform.

Sometimes, I just wanna get on T.V. and just let loose!

I should really have something to type here; I should be able to describe to you who I am, why I joined Urban Dead, and why I decided to take the time to join and contribute (Though I'm sure if you look at my contributions, you'll realise I don't contribute much to the wiki, nevermind contribute usefully.) Oh yeah, this one time, I totally ran for SysOp, because I was stupid and was in it for some kind of sense of self-importance or something, I don't know. In other news, I adore my new user page. EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THIS BOX IS TOO SHORT. I NEED SOMETHING TO PUT HERE.

My Characters

This page needs updating, but yeah, my characters (and former characters) should be available for you all to see soon.

My sandpit

This is where I keep things from aeons passed where I wanted to save edits instead of just using preview all the time. Yes, they go at the bottom of each suburb information page under the "Revive Points" header. Of course nobody's gotten around to writing them up yet, so by all means, let 'er rip! Thanks for taking care of this.--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 00:26, 6 September 2009 (BST)

Unmerging Locations

I noticed that some of the locations you posted for SD still have many incoming links. You need to fix these to point to the new articles. This is why people don't like unmerging stuff as it can take ages to fix all those links sometimes (streets are the worst, since they can generally get an incoming from every location in the suburb). Just copy pasting content around is the easy bit :P. Just a head's up. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 23:20, 16 August 2009 (BST)

Right, completely forgot about that part. This is going to make fixing the BIC look easy.--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 23:21, 16 August 2009 (BST)

I put Dakerstown Buildings up for deletion. Should be interesting see, how many wiki rules I broke in the process. Anyhoot, did you redirect Wykewoods coordinate pairs to the unmerged new pages? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Maps (talkcontribs) at an unknown time.

What are you doing with pages like SHADOW COMPANY, Tiera and Category:Confirmed Groups/stats? You appear to have recreated this page. May I ask why you are creating a page in the designated wiki space of a defunct group? Mischief! Mayhem! The Rogues Gallery!. <== DDR Approved Editor 17:03, 12 September 2009 (BST)

The page also existed as an (unused) category; I was just moving it to the regular namespace since it didn't really seem to be much of a category. My group templates...

Okay,.... so I've made a template to encompass the text I want to have on my groups KOS List Pages. I have editable sections on the template. This makes it look as if there are editable sections on each of the pages. But when I click edit, it takes you to the Templates Page, and wants you to edit that section, under the Template space. I don't want to edit my template... I want to edit the page itself. I've tried everything I can think of, and have used the reference pages you gave me. Any other suggestions? -Poodle of doom 17:58, 13 September 2009 (BST)

Remove the headers from the template, and copy paste them onto the page itself. You can't template a section you intend to edit for each page individually. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 18:07, 13 September 2009 (BST)
You can template sections of your page, but not the whole thing. Fpr instance, the "What is this page?" section (minus the header) could be templated, with the variable {{{Insert Suburb Name Here}}} (I'd settle for something shorter as the variable name; you'd have to write that out everytime you set it). You can template sections of text, code, and images, but when you throw in a whole page with headers, it doesn't really work. Also, as Rooster said, you can't template sections you're going to edit (such as the KOS list), You could template individual sections, or you could copy-paste (ctrl+c and ctrl+v) and tweak the text for each page. Given the amount of variables you're looking at, the latter might be better.--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 18:55, 13 September 2009 (BST)
So at this point,.... I'm creating 100 pages worth of stuff still, which was how the whole disagreement started in the first place on my take page. Sounds good though. Now, how do I get the variables to work? That's where my real problem lies..... -Poodle of doom 19:24, 13 September 2009 (BST)
Let's use {{Edits}},
Typewriter.jpg Edits to Date
This user has made approximately {{{1}}} edits as of {{{2}}}.
as an example. As you can see, this template uses short variable names; they don't have to be {{{1}}} and {{{2}}}, they could be {{{lotsaedits}}} and {{{datehere}}}, but simple variable names are generally more efficient and safe. Now, foy filling in the variables:
There are two ways of going about this. You can fill them in the order they appear, like this: {{Edits|42|today}}, which yeilds:
Typewriter.jpg Edits to Date
This user has made approximately 42 edits as of today.
Or you can specify which variable you want the text to represent, like this: {{Edits|2=42|1=today}}, which yeilds:
Typewriter.jpg Edits to Date
This user has made approximately today edits as of 42.
Makes sense?--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 20:25, 13 September 2009 (BST)

Large Barricade Plan Template

Hello RED! Noticed some of the nice work you've done around the wiki and thought you might be able to lend a hand with something I've been playing with off and on in my sandbox for a while-- a large version of the barricade plan template. Not quite as big as the map you have in your sandbox, but similar in size requirements.

The idea was to take the individual barricade plans for a district in Malton and combine them into one nice table so you could get the ideal barricade situation for an entire district. Also tried to get it set up such that if the plan for a suburb changed, the district plan would automatically reflect that. Over the course of a couple months work and talking with Rooster, we got that much figured out. It still looks pretty rough though, so wondering if maybe you had thoughts on how to spruce it up so it looks nice and neat before implementation for all 20 districts of Malton. --Maverick Talk - OBR Praise Knowledge! 404 18:31, 26 September 2009 (BST)

My idea was to make one for each district. I think that one large barricade plan map for the entirety of Malton would be so large that most people would be unable to even view it. Adding the key to the bottom is easy, the problem I've been having is the sizing--as you might have noticed the different suburbs have differently sized tables. Later this week I'm hoping to play around with the height and width values in the suburb tables and see if that remedies the problem. Once I get a common size among those tables, then I can shrink the size of the district table a little bit. If you think of an easier way of doing it, let me know! --Maverick Talk - OBR Praise Knowledge! 404 18:24, 28 September 2009 (BST)
I had noticed that many of the suburb barricade plans were not templated. I had to deal with that for the five suburbs I started with. It's honestly a rather minor fix, but certainly one that we will have to deal with once we get the design down and start applying it to the other districts. I'll toy around with some minor fixes to the suburb templates to see if that fixes the sizing problem, otherwise I'll contact DDR and see if she has any ideas. But I'll keep you in the loop if you're interested. --Maverick Talk - OBR Praise Knowledge! 404 01:58, 29 September 2009 (BST)
