Suggestion Talk

I was thinking that your new suggestion about temporary contacts is grown out of Short Term Memory & Zombie Recognition, and was about to move the discussion from Talk:Suggestions to the discussion on that suggestion, but it occurred to me that perhaps you are developing them as two separate suggestions. Let me know. Thanks. --PdeqTalk* 05:13, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

You were correct. I was just to lazy to do the move myself. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 20:23, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

New Suggestion Talk

Hey! I just left a brief little request on the talk page of your most recent suggestion. I have re-read it a couple of times, but I'm still having a problem determining the value of the suggestion. Any extra input is always appreciated. Thanks --Ryiis 22:09, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

"Claw for Threes" numbers

I got the numbers by setting up a spreadsheet populated in the left column by attack status (HP & grab status; eg, for attacking the 8HP survivor with claws, the states would be 8grab, 8nograb, 5grab, 5nograb etc.) Then across the top I had 1, 2, 3... representing the number of APs spent. Each box in the sheet was filled with a function describing the proportion of zombies that would be in that particular attack state on that turn. For example, the number of zombies with a 5HP grab would be the number of zombies in the previous turn with: 8HP grab *0.6, plus 8HP no grab *0.5, plus 5HP grab *0.2 (writhe & miss). Having done the functions for each, I extended them across the spreadsheet to work out the percentages.

If that makes any sense?

It's useful because it incorporates the actual functionality of Grasp rather than reducing it to an average, which is fairly important because a grasp miss can really skew later percentages.

I'd need a secure place to get you an account name and password to do so. The ud.info forum would do. Obviously there is some sensitive stuff in there. In Tank Girl records there is a day up to Heytown, 21 September 2007 (02:20) and next starts from East Becktown, 22 September 2007 (06:20). So amongst those already on wiki it lacks Brooksville (12:40) and i assume it's the only report, i.e. nothing is missing. Thanks --~~~~ [talk] 08:46, 24 September 2007 (BST)

iWitness Forum

I registered there last week sometime (with the name 'armareum'), but was rushing and chose the option that I was under 13. Is there anyway you can deleted that account, so that I can re-register? There's at least 2 things I'd like to post there. 'arm. 03:16, 23 September 2007 (BST)

I actually forwarded the registration email to your gmail (on Sept 12), from my gmail, when I realised my mistake. It should match the email address for the account. I can't PM you on the forum, since I can't actually log in at all ("being under 13" means that the account can only be activated by a parent or guardian, rather than the usual activation code). I can't register another account using the same email address. It's all a bit frustrating. You should see that the account 'armareum' is completely inactive. 'arm. 06:54, 23 September 2007 (BST)

Confused..

Why not simply eliminate Recruitment and Talk:Recruitment, and only use Category:Recruitment and Category_talk:Recruitment. Instead of using one part of each pair? - Whitehouse 19:00, 16 September 2007 (BST)

No good reason. I was just lazy; to get the category listing to work, I 'had to copy-paste everything from Recruitment onto Category:Recruitment. Once that was done, I could have copy-pasted the talk page over, but a re-direct was faster to make.
I don't see any harm in the "half and half" setup. The old Recruitment page has WAY to many target links to ever be deleted, so its talk page will always be around. If it makes thing less confusing, feel free to make them match. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 23:41, 16 September 2007 (BST)

Radio Logging

trying to setup a website to log radio chanels .. (well its setup but i need an easyer way to log) preview here it is a little primative but works

wondering on your thoughts / ideas on the subject

--Dans34 20:41, 12 September 2007 (BST)

How do you plan to get the radio messages UPLOADED to your site, and indexed by time? That's the tricky part; the rest is just DB queries, which I don't actually know how to do, but know are pretty simple IF you have the DB set up properly.
Assuming a decent upload stream, it seems a good idea. The features are simple enough, but obviously useful, if they function properly. The devil really will be in the details. Make sure you security is good; at a minimum, block any uploads that include characters not found in radio broadcasts, though I don;t think that really covers it. Not so much because the site itself is worth hacking, but because the hacks could annoy / endanger users. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 23:05, 12 September 2007 (BST)

i was thinking of grabing the html from the page. and grabing the lines that have a radio freqency in them .. how this is going to work i dont know (even if it will work) --Dans34 10:45, 13 September 2007 (BST)

"Grabbing" the HTML is a bit vauge. When I started working on Iwitness, I though I could uses javascript on my website, but that isn't possible- browsers won't let you run javascript that is on your own website and have it affect other websites, for security reasons. You need to use a bookmarklet or a user script / browser extension, both of which are javascript that runs on the client machine only, under the clients control, thus bypassing the security.
The other option is just using a form with a text box where people can copy and paste code, or even just cope and paste the text from the screen. This might seem less secure, and does make "faking" easier for people who lack coding skills, but its actually possible (and nearly as easy) to fake out the techniques mentioned above.
Neither method helps much with logging the time, unfortunatley.SIM Core Map.png Swiers 12:30, 13 September 2007 (BST)

i like your idea of getting people to conribute .. ill have a brainstorm tonight and see what i come up with .. ill probably use the server time --Dans34Talk Umbrella Corporation 00:37, 14 September 2007 (BST)

just thinking with user contributions .. there wouldn't be a way to check if the message had allready been uploaded .. so many logs may be incorrect / incomplete .. --Dans34Talk Umbrella Corporation 18:12, 14 September 2007 (BST)

You could check if an identical message string had been uploaded, but its possible for two identical messages to be broadcast at different times, or on different channels, or whatever. Its a complex problem, but basically it boild down to logging the time, channel, and content of each message. The last two are easy; the first is suprisingly hard, although an auto-logging extension could do it. Don't ask me how to program one... SIM Core Map.png Swiers 03:24, 15 September 2007 (BST)

Dupe Idea?

Howdy Swiers- recently, I put an idea up for discussion on the Talk:Suggestions page- but I was told it was a dupe of something you suggested. I looked through some archives, and at current suggestions, and I found one that had to do with scanners here: Suggestion:20070829_Scanning_Required_for_Revives, but that's all. Is this person mistaken, or have you suggested the same fix for the way that scanners handle stacks?--Father Thompson 03:06, 10 September 2007 (BST)

There's been a couple suggestions along the lines of fixing this problem. I forget what mine was called, but here's one. I remember making one that allowed 3 scanning modes - a random mode, a reversed-stack mode ("bottom first"), and a cyclic mode (this last being exactly like your suggestion). I think it took a skill to access these new scanner modes. Can't find the suggestion now, not sure what its status was (not approved, maybe removed). Sorry I can't help more, like by finding the suggestion. I think it was called something like "Scanner Hack", but that calls up my comment on the suggestion I linked to, not my own suggestion. Club Vagg

Yeah, I had actually considered going there, until I saw the red on the map... What I'd like to know is if the map really is full of angry zombies, or if there's just a wave front and the rest is full of dead people who haven't been revived yet. I have a tool box and I know how to use it, you know... Other than that, I considered Club Barling. --Penny Black 19:26, 2 September 2007 (BST)

The worst zombies are along the 20 block or so "battle front", but I'm sure there's enough "real" zombies in the "deep read" to be a threat to any group of less than 20 or so survivors. Plus, I know of a few groups that are solely committed to holding territory in the deep red. Still, hit with a group that's big enough, repair some decoy buildings and a safe house, start reviving people, and you MIGHT bring the suburb back. At which point, all the zombies from neighboring burbs would close in and crush you, unless other folks were doing the same in other suburbs. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 01:12, 3 September 2007 (BST)
Well, I'll say like Eddie Murphy: "Girl just wants to party all the time, party all the time..." I'm still not decided, Club Barling is an old haunt and seemingly in a safe(r) area, but let's not forget that Club Vagg has topless night on thursdays! --Penny Black 19:23, 3 September 2007 (BST)

Dirt:Nap with CanteraFire

2 September

Hey Swiers, assuming this is where you want me to post to you. I usually just lurk on the Wiki so not really up with the etiquette on quick talking. I'm out of AP for the day but I've got 31 syringes. Is that good or should I stock up some more? First time running one of these so bear with me a bit...--Cantera 15:25, 2 September 2007 (BST)

Damn, you must have had some good luck! I'm just over 20, I think. Its pretty easy to run- we just need to pick a revive point with about as many targets as we have syringes between us. That's really the hard part! Its entirely possible to move from one rp to another though- you don't need to be alive to walk! The essential trick is just to make sure at all times that one of us is dead but has been revived. There is NOTHING that can injure a reviving body, so that "funny smelling corpse" is a garunteed source of revives (assuming they have needles, which we've taken care of). With two people, this is a bit harder, but its not so bad. The trick is just to revive your team-mate first thing after you stand up, so that you know THEY are now the "funny smelling corpse". This is pretty easy because, even when dead, you can see who is present at the RP. Just make sure a team mate (me in this case) is present as a zombie, and your good to go!
Mind you, this is the ideal case. In many cases, your team mate gets revived by some other person, or wanders off to find a new revive point. Both are OK- it just takes a bit of communication to make sure you can keep a safe pattern of "always have one sleeping". Again, that is easier with a bigger group, but do-able with 2. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 16:30, 2 September 2007 (BST)
Sounds good, a few questions.
1. Can you see the list of dead bodies when you are waiting to stand up as well as the zeds?
2. Should I only revive zombs that have registered in the revive tools or just try to work my way through the queue?
3. If there is a rotter in the queue and I don't have any of the other zeds in my contact list is there a way to get around him to the other zeds if DNA Extraction shows "No new specimens"? Never been a problem for me in the past but I haven't been doing bulk sticks...
4. Should I bother with FAK's for infections or will it not matter?

3 September

My needles are ready, just point me to the queue you want to head to. Looks like Extinction has done a hell of a job in the west so the lines are pretty long over there. Gonna try to get a last few syringes while I'm here but I'll be ready to go tomorrow. --Cantera 04:23, 3 September 2007 (BST)
1 - Yes, you can. You get a full scene description, just without certain event reports.
2 - Revive (or not) at will. Only a very small portion of people use the revive tools, so I advise shooting for as many as you can, without reviving obvious zombies (dies 5+ times per level, etc).
3 - Yeah, thats a real nuisance. The easiest solution is just to move to a new block. You can even just tell the dead people the rotter is there, and ask THEM to kill him and also to spread out, so that the next person doing revives has an easier time. Talking to the zombies can make DIRT:NAP a lot easier, especially if somebody stays standing as a zombie long enough to see their response.
4 - While doing revives, infections won't matter. Doing a revive counts as only one action for infection purposes. You won't die of infection- you'll die because you go into negative APs reviving people in a red zone! Keep a few faks for when you are done, or in case living looks to be a better option than doing a suicide revive, but you won't need them as a general thing
Summary- Not really sure where the best place to head is. My gut says NE Yagoton, as that is the typical area survivors use to stage re-captures of Caiger. Gonna check the RP list, see if there are any near there. Yep- 41,12, next to the Style Building, looks like a good location. Obviously we won't know till we get there. We just gotta make sure the folks we revive don't try something stupid, like re-taking Bale Mall. Why doesn;t one of us move in first, and do some tagging / reviving until zombiefied. Then the other can come in and reivive them, and spend the rest of thier AP on tags / revives, and the process will be under-way. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 15:57, 3 September 2007 (BST)
I've got an alt that I usually keep in Yagoton and it was pretty bad. Had to move him out about a week ago because revives there were so slow and I got tired of the stand and sway. Probably a good place to start. It would be a good start out there if they could get an NT up and running. I don't have any spray cans, will that matter? Other than that, ready to go. Just let me know if you want to go first or if I should. In the meantime I'll let my AP build up.
Sounds like what we are looking for, though I suspect if they try to get the NT going again, they will die. That's the point of the spraycans- tag with directions to SAFE areas. I can't act for another 6 hours, so you might as well move out first. I'll do a bit of tagging on my way in, throw out some dialog, revive you, and make sure I'm standing as a zombie when you wake up. Just let me know when you are standing as a zombie, and where. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 18:30, 3 September 2007 (BST)

Not sure there really are any safe areas anymore. Check this: Raines_Hills. At the speed the map is turning red there won't be anywhere to fall back to unless we can get some yellows and greens to the west behind the front lines. Also, looks like the DEM revive request tool is down. All in all, not looking like a good time to be a survivor. (At least my zombie alt is having a good time).

I've got 30AP right now but I'm gonna head to the Cemetery at 45,18. Pretty close to two NT's so I'm guessing the line is pretty long there. It'll take about 35AP to get there so I'm gonna wait for my AP to top off before I head out. Hopefully I can get one stick in or at least some good Extracts before lying down. I'll check in here before I go so if you've headed out there already let me know when you're the standing dead. If you're not in Patterson I won't leave until I see a post here saying you're ready for a revive. Good hunting...

Standing as a zombie outside the Style Building- 42,12. Had to swan dive to do it- the revive point is REALLY safe, I stood there for almost three hours and just took a couple bites. Here's a couple profiles to revive- http://urbandead.com/profile.cgi?id=766582 , http://urbandead.com/profile.cgi?id=416986 , and one not to http://urbandead.com/profile.cgi?id=980486 . SIM Core Map.png Swiers 02:56, 4 September 2007 (BST)
Alright, you should now "smell funny." You know how to cut it close, 1 AP after finding you. After seeing how badly the suburbs were while going through them I'm starting to feel like my prom date just drove me out into the desert and I just noticed the shovel in the backseat:) Added your zeds to my contacts and found this one out front of style: http://urbandead.com/profile.cgi?id=189223. Only had one AP left so I extracted instead of going inside and not having enough to jump. I'll plan on jumping first thing in the morning but I figured you didn't have your AP back up anyway so the zeds will probably get me first. --Cantera 05:02, 4 September 2007 (BST)
Your dead now. I can see the body, but haven't stood up. I won't have 50 AP for another 20 hours- at that point, I'll make sure your standing as a zombie (either if I see you or get word) and stand up to do my revives. And yeah, I pushed a bit deeper than expected- not much AP left after the hike. Hopefully that means fewer hostile zombies (from my three hours outside, I'd say it does), though I can see already that rotters will be a problem. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 11:23, 4 September 2007 (BST)

I went ahead and stood up but I know you've gotta wait for your AP to top out again. I'll check back later in the day to make sure the other zeds didn't knock me down again. Looks like we've got our work cut out for us in clearing out Harkness. Too bad we didn't have a few more people with us. Guess I'll just try to grab as many rev requests as I can into my contacts from the tools and hopefully we can work around the rotters.--Cantera 13:50, 4 September 2007 (BST)

Good plan. Time spent standing as a zombie can be a great way to find out who needs revives- important, as there are rotters around. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 21:04, 4 September 2007 (BST)

Did my first full cycle. I'm at -8 AP, but will stand up as soon as I am able. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 03:27, 5 September 2007 (BST)

ok, I see you over there. Just let me know when you're dead and standing. Also, didn't realize you could go negative. Guess it never occurred to me to try.--Cantera 03:44, 5 September 2007 (BST)
With revives costing 10 AP, its pretty much the only way to perform 5 revives at one crack. Works well with DIRT:NAP, as you don't need to save AP to get inside. As a practical thing though, don't be surpised if you can only perform 3-4 revives a day (including the one on me) on some days- 5 a day is hard even when you don;t care about staying alive afterwords, or at least it is if you are at all selective about who you revive. BTW, I got a couple good ones today. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 03:58, 5 September 2007 (BST)

I'm a zombie again. Your turn to live. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 13:18, 5 September 2007 (BST)

6 September

k, you should be ready to live again. I should be dead shortly. Lost count but I think I got 4+ you, at least 3. One was a Lvl 30 and one was a level 41 so not bad. I skipped one that was only a level 2 and GnawYourFace(980486) is a non rotter in the queue requesting not to be revived. Not sure what to do at that point but if he gets in the way we may need to just combat revive him anyway. Either way, wasn't a problem this time. Good luck. I'm at -8AP now so I'll be ready to go again tomorrow.
I have 50 AP saved up, but I see you as a dead body, not a zombie. I can't stand up until I know you are a zombie- otherwise, how can I be sure you will get revived? SIM Core Map.png Swiers 13:00, 6 September 2007 (BST)
Sorry, standing now. Here's a zed in the mix to save you an extract if you don't have him: Peter The Dressmaker(770319). Also, here's the level 2 guy I've been avoiding: Akrate(899793). Happy reviving. I'm at 36AP right now so I should be able to start up again this afternoon.--Cantera 13:08, 6 September 2007 (BST)
Cool, thanks. While I was giving my little speech, a zombie attacked me and took me down pretty low, so I revived you and ran away. After a few fruitless scans, I decided to use one of my FAKs instead of dying without doing any revives. So I did, and went back to the RP and revived Peter, Akrate, and another I had in my list from before. They all have free running and a good level / death ratio, so should be OK if they follow the advice I gave.
Here's the scans I got in-
Tony Yaker - good for a revive if you don't have time to scan
The Widower - the zombie who almost killed me. Just ignore him.
Andy Warhol - a rotter I scanned while looking for revives (got him firt try) - 500+ deaths, impressive. Must be one of the guys who normally jams the Yagoton Revive Clinic.
Jaysan - Also scanned on the first try. If he didn't have brain rot, I might have revived him - lots of human skills and not THAT many deaths. Wierd.
colorado - Level 1, Vigor, no xp. I'm betting there is a utah, nebraska, montana, and idaho somewhere not to far away. Ignore.
SIM Core Map.png Swiers 14:02, 6 September 2007 (BST)
Thanks for the scans. Warhol has gotten my alt in the past, he's a regular. Of the 18 zeds here it looks like the queue is pretty jammed with rotters. We can keep cleaning but we may want to move to another location at some point. Also, the guys we revive are gonna be screwed if infected and no faks (quite probable if they've been out here to long). They'll be dead in 30 steps, probably not enough to get to safety. Since the front lines are continuing to move east we may want to consider moving at some point over the next couple of days too. I'm at 48AP right now so I'm ready to go as soon as you stand up again. Also, let me know if you want to use an alt to start another Dirt:Nap or to take over on this one. If so I'll get mine to start gathering needles. With the work Extinction is doing and difficulty of getting a survivor beachhead with Ruined buildings it's probably the most helpful thing to do right now as a survivor.--Cantera 19:22, 6 September 2007 (BST)

Hey man, ready to go whenever you are. Just waiting for you to standup so I can revive you and get to work. You're showing up as a dead body scientist rather than a zombie. Did someone else revive you? Sorry if I'm missing something but thought I was waiting for you to be a zombie before I stood up and went to work.--Cantera 04:51, 7 September 2007 (BST)
My bad. I ran into negative APs and forgot to log back in to stand up. Sorry. Handled now. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 12:52, 7 September 2007 (BST)

Good run, I got a couple of 41er's in there plus the guys we had extracted before. Only had to go -3 too so that's a good thing. I'll stand up in about 6 hours so you can hit me again. Damn job always gets in the way :) Here's a couple of zombs to avoid, should save you some extractions: 901351, 984761 --Cantera 14:01, 7 September 2007 (BST)

8 September

Did 4+ you. At -9, will have to wait until tomorrow morning to stand. Unfortuantley, adding a zombie to your contact list does NOT remove them from the scan stack; you are forced to scan past folks you don't want to revive, even if they are contacts. Its only when you have people you DO want to revive in your contact list that it helps any. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 02:05, 8 September 2007 (BST)
Not sure if you see ruined buildings as a dead body but if you can it looks like the Style building next door may have been retaken. Am I going crazy on that one? I'm at 50AP so I'll stand up as soon as you do.
Yep, you can see ruins / powered buildings. The NT is actually powered now. I wouldn't bet on it staying that way, and would rather keep doing what we are doing, maybe at a new revive point, and send the folks we revive to help rather than help ourselves. Anyhow, I'm standing as a zombie now - sorry again for being so slow. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 23:33, 8 September 2007 (BST)
You should be ready to go again. Got stuck with the "All Zeds have be scanned" before I could get my last revive in but I got you plus 3 more. Style is at EHB so that's a good sign. Orders Street NE of Style has 3 zeds standing so they might be waiting for a rev there if you can't get through the rotters. I've got at least 4 rotters in the line with 17 standing and 21 on the ground. Might be time to move to another spot. I've still got 18 needles left. Let me know if you want to move but be forewarned that I'm infected and only have 1 fak so I'll only be able to move 30 before dying. I'd like to keep that FAK to get home when we're done if I can help it.--Cantera 01:14, 9 September 2007 (BST)
Simple answer to the infection; if you move, do it as a zombie. I've got 2 FAks, so can move as a survivor and revive you. Probably makes sense to do the trip home as a zombie and get a revive in a green zone anyhow. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 01:22, 9 September 2007 (BST)

11 September

Revived 5, went negative, was being killed as a worked. Will post again as soon as I stand up. Don't worry about reviving me if it holds you up- I think we can get revives from others now. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 15:33, 11 September 2007 (BST)

Yeah, just saw you finally get killed. Do you want to move to another area or just call it a job well done on this one? I've got an alt in Pashenton and it's looking pretty rough over there. Plenty of needles left, seems like a waste to one by one them. Shit, just stood up and realized I'm a zed not a human. So we're both zeds. Well, we can move to another location or wait for someone to revive one of us. Ideas?
Well, Yagoton officially does not need us. I've already been revived and the queue is empty. Let me know if you want to call it quits but I'd be up for moving somewhere else if you're up for it.

I hope you;ve been able to move on your own. I've been busy and won't be doing much. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 12:20, 13 September 2007 (BST)

Newbies...

It seems as if Officer 123satsitx tried to create a new template by editing a previous one, or something... Anyway, he messed up the Custom Template. I've been trying to figure out what he did, but thus far I have been unable to fix it. Could you give me a hand? Also, thanks for shooting my guy with a shotty :P --Banana reads Scoundrell for all of Yesterday's News, Today! 22:11, 1 September 2007 (BST)

Looking at his contributions, it seemed you meant {tl|Custom Title}}. Simple fix- I just looked at the history, picked the version before he edited, opened it for editing, and saved it. My user page uses that template and looks fine now.
As for shooting your guy, I shoot so MANY, I forget them all. But I'm sure it was special at the time.
Just rest assured my new bounty hunter is every bit as deadly, if not more so. She's 1 week old and has bountied 4 PKers, LOL. (I don't report them, but encourage the bounty to self report.) SIM Core Map.png Swiers 22:29, 1 September 2007 (BST)

Suggestions

Is there really any need for this, that category is already so full to be pretty much useless at finding anything. All it is is a list of all suggestions, with the crap and the good stuff mixed up together The preceding signed comment was added by boxy (talkcontribs) at 01:24 1 September 2007 (BST)

Yes, and that is exactly the point- its a list of ALL the suggestion pages, IN ONE PLACE.
If you remember part of a suggestion name from 3 months ago, but not what the voting outcome was, how do you find it? Looking through a dozen possible categories (rejected, removed, approved skill, approved item, duped, spam, etc) is annoying as hell (and you might miss one), and (at least in my experience) the wiki search is almost zero help with finding these new suggestion pages. I made that big "ugly" category so you could go to that one page and do a search, being sure not to miss anything. Its not there to be pretty, its there as a "power tool". Its not expected anybody would perform a an eyeball mrk 1 search on this category- I actually use a regex tool to search it!
The category itself does no harm and is very logical (you should ALWAYS have a top level category). If there is some other way than using that template to get the category on every suggestion page, it would work fine; that was just the simplest solution I saw to get it on both all the old ones and any new ones. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 03:02, 1 September 2007 (BST)
Well, if I was looking for a suggestion I put up, or even voted on, I would go to my contributions, and then select the suggestions namesapace, giving these results. If I wanted to search the new suggestion namesapace, I'd type in the search query, hit search, then go to the bottom of the page, where there is the option to search the different namespaces, suggestions included. Consider substing your sig or something

your sig has an equals sign in it so it breaks every template you sign. If you try this as your sig it will plug all that stuff in from a user subpage retroactivly and work every where ...

Signature Help

Hello Swiers, I need help with my sig, and Dux Ducis referred me to you. Whenever I use my templated sig, this is what I get: --Hhal 00:51, 27 August 2007 (BST)

Dux said: "I've never really had that problem before. I think that it is to do with your tagging. You are using HTML and XHTML. You need to use one (include everything in the tag) or the other (use font=color not as a span). For the right code, you better ask someone like Swiers."

I'm pretty clueless about HTML, so can you help me please?

-Hhal

You had a tage tha you didn't close. Closing it solved the problem, though I can't say for sure why it caused a problem in the first place. Anyhow, it seems fixed now. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 13:00, 27 August 2007 (BST)
I'm betting he was getting a box around his text. If so it's a wiki code triggered by a line with a space in front of it
See
I would say a unclosed tag could do that, probably because it takes the next line of code as part of the block with the starting tag, it's like having a sup tag a line break and a space some words after the space, then closing the sup tag, and is read the same way because it's in the same coding block. That make any sense? If not I'll show you.

this is

what I mean
The code of the sig takes the first part, then there is a linebreak after your addition, a space and time and date are added.

VecusumRRF•CRF•CR 13:00, 27 August 2007 (BST)

It's essentially reading everything not in the template as a second line because the way the HTML is looking for an end tag. That's about all I can tell you on that.--Karekmaps?! 11:55, 28 August 2007 (BST)

ZMAZH shooting

If i recall correctly ZMAZH is yours character. Some new guy have just reported that he was shot by ZMAZH with gun. How could that happen? --~~~~T''' 10:08, 25 August 2007 (BST)

Well, given the profile, it doesn't take much to figure out that is my zombie! How did this happen? I dunno, it must be a bug, right? Nah, it was intentional- why do you think he wears the deerstalker?
It takes only a minor bit of URL tweaking to let a zombie use a gun. Actually, some extensions allow it without any extra work, either as an extension bug or as a "hidden feature". The result is either a bug exploit or a hidden game feature, depending on your viewpoint.
IMO it is not game damaging because the zombie shooters are basically just PKers who have all the limitations of zobmies. They still spend AP to shoot the gun, and they can't re-load, search, or od anything else a normal zombie can't do. Since they have to re-load as humans, its clear that ZMAZH got revived DESPITE his profile...
ZU zombies get shot nonstop (its their stated purpose for existance, and ZMAZH's profile shows he cleaves to that purpose) but they also get revived a lot. I figure its funny to turn the tables and shoot a few humans as a zombie after getting revived. It wouldn't be so funny if organized zombie groups did this, but as far as I know none of them allows it- or, for that matter, would gain anything from it. On your current suggestion

This is from the voting rules found at the bottom of any suggestion page: "Reing every kill vote is considered abuse of the Re comment." I don't say this to be mean (I actually really appreciate how active you are on voting on/making suggestions). I just wanted to make you aware that you are doing this. I tell you here rather than on the suggestion talk page so as to avoid influencing voting with this comment. Regards. --Pdeq 05:51, 22 August 2007 (BST)

I don't think they literally mean "every" kill vote. If you were to reply to 99 out of 100 kill votes, this would still be an abuse of the comment system. However, since there are only a few kill votes so far, I think you are in the clear. I just wanted to make you aware that you were approaching what could be considered an abuse. You seem to have a popular suggestion, and I'd hate to have it spoiled by voting misconduct. --Pdeq 22:53, 22 August 2007 (BST)

The Player Killer Hub /recruit

Hola. For whatever reason the line for Cybele's Slayers is dorked out of line way to the right of the rest of the page, putting a horizontal scroll on the Recruitment page. I glanced at the code on the template, nothing obvious. Could you check it out? -- Atticus Rex mfu pif Δ 02:21, 11 August 2007 (BST)

Thanks for the heads up. I have no idea what caused that, but I suspect it had smething to do with an interaction between wiki parsing and my use of the HTML div tag with an align attribute. I was able to duplicate the intended layout using a wiki table rather than div tags, without the same problem. But then I went ahead and changed it up a bit anyhow.
Many, its nice doing all that work on an individual page, rather than scrolling past TONS of other stuff to see my results. ΔΔ Swiers BigEYEwitnessLOGOgrey.png 03:09, 11 August 2007 (BST)
I hear that, plus you can have your ad protected if you feel inclined. I did that with the AMS ad a while back, after seeing Max had done one for the JoGens. Dunno if the larger community is gonna sign on to it, but I think your idea of converting recruitment ads to template calls is a good one. -- Atticus Rex mfu pif Δ 03:31, 11 August 2007 (BST)
I don't think it need support form the "larger community". As far as I know, a pages editorial guidelines can be changed without democratic vote; its just a matter of concensus (as expressed through group editing of the guidelines) between the individual editors. (Correct me if I'm wrong, btw.) The new system makes things MUCH easier on the people who do the most editing. If I get those few on board, its a done deal for the rest of the users- well, maybe barring some howling mad objector who thinks templates are the devil's tool. ΔΔ Swiers BigEYEwitnessLOGOgrey.png 03:45, 11 August 2007 (BST)
Aye; by "larger community," I think I meant the people who post recruitment ads. :D Hopefully they'll see the advantages of using this method too. And yes, it makes editing the page much easier, not to mention eliminating those annoying Danger: This page is Really Frakking Long messages. -- Atticus Rex mfu pif Δ 03:50, 11 August 2007 (BST)
It also allows the ads to be categorized, an advantage that won't be fully clear until AFTER the change is made. At that point, I plan to stealth-swap the whole page over onto Category: Recruitment (leaving just a re-direct and a LARGE cloud of dust at Recruitment) so that the sorted category listing shows up on the bottom of the page. ;-) ΔΔ Swiers BigEYEwitnessLOGOgrey.png 03:57, 11 August 2007 (BST)

Hey

Hey Swiers, Matt here. I don't contact you very often, but as I'm always lurking around and I get to see your contributions a lot, I was wondering if you intended to ever become a Sysop. The way I see it, you have helped a lot on this wiki and beyond, and I trust that with the extra powers you won't do any harm and have the potential of improve your wiki experience and the ammount and value of your contributions, or at the very least skip some bureaucracy and do things that you can't currently do by yourself, like moving pages and stuff.

Normally, I would nominate you directly, but with all those contributions, your time here and yet... no nominations, I was wondering if you purposelly didn't want to be on the Administrational team. Maybe I missed some discussion or something, so... how do you feel about a promotion? --Matthew Fahrenheit YRCT+1 06:00, 5 August 2007 (BST)

Matt has a point here Swiers - you fiddle around and make a lot of pages. I'd also love to have you on the team. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 06:40, 5 August 2007 (BST)
It came up for the first time not long ago... User_talk:Swiers/Aug1Archive#Look.21_a_level_3.21.21_heading. I've generally stuck with basic content edits, which may be why there was no previous nomination. My fear is that such a title would be extra work and unavoidable drama. But if all it really amounts to is having better tools to do stuff I already do, then it might be a good idea. ΔΔΔ Swiers BigEYEwitnessLOGOgrey.png 06:45, 5 August 2007 (BST)
You won't have any extra obligations except those that you choose to have, and you can pretty much go idle the same day you get promoted and I don't think someone will care. BUT, of course, the extra abilities will help you a lot and the Sysop status doesn't by itself attract drama. The most ative Sysops have trouble with drama because they have to deal with petty cases and all kind of disheartening stuff, but in no way drama is unavoidable as a Sysop. This is even more true with calm, well behaved and respected users such as yourself when they become Sysops.
If I can dare to say this, to be a UDWiki Sysop is much less about commitment than it is about harnessing, keeping and mantaining over time the trust of the community. The Sysop status itself is a lot like a badge of recognition over confidence and a good deal of work well done that comes with a handy toolkit. I can't think of a better way to help you to help us make this wiki grow. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRCT+1 07:27, 5 August 2007 (BST)
OK, I'm convinced. ΔΔΔ Swiers BigEYEwitnessLOGOgrey.png 13:09, 5 August 2007 (BST)

Nope, I'm pretty uselss when it comes to style formating. I actually skipped that entire era of HTML (no computer except a DOS 286 for terminal mode emails) and went straight from using <color> to using CSS. ΔΔΔ Swiers BigEYEwitnessLOGO.png 14:29, 2 August 2007 (BST)
Well, technically "style formatting" is inline CSS. It's applied per-element and can be really clunky... and it's about all we can use on a Wiki, where we can't edit the style sheet for a page. *cough* Excuse me for butting in, but I think I've fixed your problem, Dux. ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾ 14:05, 3 August 2007 (BST)
