Woolford Boulevard School

The Woolford: a bastion of privilege, or a privileged bastion?

Description

A Georgian private home constructed of red brick and stone, built by Sir Egbert Woolford (hosier to the Prince Regent, and founder of Wolford Hosiery). After Woolford's death it was converted into a school according to a bequest in his will that his fortune should help educate the scholars of the Village. Standing tall near the old house is Woolford Boulevard Public School, a four-storey metal-and-glass building that is clearly visible from the street poking above the trees.

History

A small private school set up for the grade school-aged children of Foulkes Village middle-class professionals, 'the Woolly' was to educate many of Malton's most prestigious individuals: Wilfred Urquhart, Archibald Cholmondely and Cuthbert Fotheringhay-Featherstonehaugh being just a few of the most unpronounceable. However far they went in their chosen fields - medicine, the law, even politics (for the less ambitious), the old school tie united Woolfordians, old and new.

Later, a larger public school was built from the funds donated by the Woolford School Alumni. It would serve as an important shelter after the apocalypse for NecroTech workers in the Henley building next door, many of whom attended 'the Woolly' themselves...

Fogbit

The annual Woolford schoolboys' game of fogbit - a violent mix of football, rugby and cricket, in which fatalities were common during the 19th century - remained part of Village life right up until the apocalypse. In fact, some analysts of zombie behaviour believe that some of the undead rotters may actually be playing a form of fogbit. While the original purpose of the game was to get a pig's bladder from one side of the Village to the other, it would seem that human bladders have now been substituted as they are more readily available.
