Youngan Boulevard

Description

The Youngans: an anarchic gang inspired by May 1958.

An uninspiring suburban street, notable only for being the site of the Youngans Commune from the late Seventies to 1984.

History

The so-called Youngans were a group of anarcho-hippie-Trotskyite students from Pegton College inspired by the events of May 1958 to set up a student commune in the heart of Pegton.

The commune was crushed in 1984.

Despite attracting the attention of the diligent local police force on a few occasions (for example, when an atomic bomb fell on their house yet failed to explode, or when a Special Patrol Group of hamsters went missing inside the commune), the commune was allowed to exit almost entirely beyond the reach of conventional society. Members bathed in mud, plotted the overthrow of the Thatcherite Federal Council of Pegton and devised bizarre fund-raising schemes - for example, letting out one room of the house as an ice-skating rink. The one rule of the commune was that no-one was allowed (or rather, able) to attract a girlfriend.

Between 1982 and 1984, the students went on general strike, refusing to do any work whatsoever. Nobody noticed the absence of their third-rate essays in any case, but the FCP decided enough was enough and the commune was evicted in the summer of 1984. The Youngans were marched onto a red Routemaster bus and exiled from Malton entirely; dark allegations were made that the bus was in fact simply driven over a cliff, most probably Malton's Great Rift Valley.
