The precedent of Roman Law

In ancient Rome, citizenship was given to all those who lived in Rome. At least, at first. Once the empire started to expand, it was given to the few, the priviledged, not the many, and non-citizens had little or no rights. The word privilege derives from 'private law'; the law of the citizenry.

As citizens dealt with foreigners, this created problems. The rule of law is fundamental to commerce, amongst other things. How can a contract be made without the law? How can a transaction be secured? Merchants can only survive under the protection of law, against thieves, bandits and broken promises.

The concept of a natural law emerged, Jus Naturale, a law that applied universaly and was derived from a Roman view of what was self-evident for all mankind. At least at some level, Justice could and must exist for all. The greatest legacy of Rome.

In the 21st century, the Law and Justice parted company. Laws were set by those enslaved by the media. Legislative office was about how much money you could raise to pay to convince the electorate. What little morality in lawmaking became associated with arbitrarily defined lines of argument. Pro Life. Pro Choice. Pro Gun. Pro Social. Pro Individual. Law became about power, and power became ultimately corrupt. The United States fell, and it was up to the Judges to pick up the pieces.

Here, now, in The Pit, that a confused citizenry have renamed Malton, it is up to us to bring the rule of Law; Law that applies beyond the grave. Law that applies to citizen, Judge and undead alike. Law that will not be denied. We, the Judges, we will maintain our alliegance to the Law, and we will await the arrival of Judge Dredd. He is the Law!

Then, creeps, you'll know the meaning of true justice. Then you'll know the meaning of Ignorantia Legis Non Excusat.

Reporting in, Sir!

Glad I found you guys - I was concerned there were no other judges left. This is one lawless city and it seems to be down to the local vigilante groups to keep things under some semblance of order. I'm helping out an Unamedgroup over in Ruddlebank at the moment, but I'll reinforce you as soon as possible. My serial number's 497705: request you advise all known judges to add this to their contacts so I can obtain coordinates of Sector House 301 over a secure channel (just as soon as I can find myself a mobile phone). Judge Crispin out.
