Some notes

All this is, at best, a solid and working hypothesis. (I hesitated to post this as an official wiki page for a while, because most of what I was doing was guesswork). I've finally been able to take screenshots of most of the flavor text, and observed several varieties of transition between levels and conditions, and so far this seems the best explanation of the patterns I've observed. But I've never, for instance, cleaned up dried blood from level 6 to 5 to 4 to 3 (though I've cleaned up 3 to 2, and 2 to 1, and 1 to 0). So if your experiences ingame contradict anything asserted or proposed here, please correct any shortcomings.

And here's some lingering questions I've had throughout the process:

  • Does attacking a zombie create bloodstains? Attacking a zombie does not appear to cause bloodstains; controlled testing is necessary to prove conclusively.
  • Are fresh bloodstains cleaned before dried bloodstains? Fresh and dried bloodstains are cleaned simultaneously, if of the same level. It is highly probable that mixed X transitions to mixed X-1; controlled testing is necessary to prove conclusively.
  • Can two sets of dried bloodstains overlay one another? Or do fresh and dried bloodstains end up compounded with one another at the server reset? It is highly probable that any mixed bloodstains transition to dried bloodstains upon server reset (mixed X ---> dried X). A controlled observation is necessary to prove conclusively.
  • What creates the flavor text visible from the outside? Attacks inside (and if so, what level is needed?), or attacks outside?
  • What is the percentage rate for a successful attack to cause a blood-spattering "hit"?
  • How many blood-spattering "hits" does it take to "up" the level of blood? Does the number of hits necessary increase for each level? (NB: It DOES take more than one successful hit. See notes on observed conditions and transitions. How else could "flecked with dried and fresh" coexist with an observed transition from dried 4 to mixed 5?).
