The '''[[Malton Forensics Unit]]''' has a structured chain of command. The hierarchical organization is designed for efficiency and clarity. MFU members are spread out throughout the city, and one of their greatest strengths are their organizational abilities and their dedication to help out each other, to aid members of other DEM groups and all upstanding citizens of Malton. As such, while MFU personnel are expected to work within the chain of command and to follow the guidelines and policies put forth by their superiors, they are also strongly encouraged to communicate and adapt to meet local needs to the best of their abilities. MFU officers are encouraged to coordinate and work with any local organization whose goals are congruent with DEM and MFU goals - saving lives, and providing revivification to fallen survivors.

== Department Organization ==
The '''Chief of Forensics''' is in charge of all MFU operations throughout [[Malton]]. The city is divided up in a grid-work pattern of [[suburb]]s, organized into four quadrants known as divisions. A '''Head Coroner''' commands the MFU operations in an entire division. Each division is broken up into 5 districts, which consist of 5 suburb blocks (see diagrams [[Malton Forensics Unit/Chain of Command#Current Staffing|below]]). Within each of these districts, a '''Coroner''' is appointed to organize the district and relay orders to lower ranking officers. Each district is comprised of 5 suburbs, each of which contains a suburb team presided over by a '''Pathologist'''. '''Toxicologists''' and '''Lab Technicians''' are under a Pathologist's authority. In addition, mobile teams operating throughout a district or division can be formed, which are led by a Pathologist or Coroner (depending on the team size and range of operations) and whose members consist of all ranks below that of the team leader.

The '''Researcher''' ('''RSR''') is a MFU member that has retired from full-time duty but remains a member of the MFU by request.
*Researchers are sometimes assigned only to a division and not to a specific district, suburb, or team, but may attach themselves to a district or suburb crew on a temporary or semi-permanent basis.
*Semi-active Researchers may or may not be included on divisional forum rosters, which is at the option of the Researcher and the commanding officer maintaining the roster.
*Researchers are exempt from reporting requirements, however are encouraged to log in as time allows.
*Researchers usually retain the level of forum access they had at the time of retirement.

As a general rule, the rank of Researcher is only available to command personnel; however, exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis for retiring Pathologists or Toxicologists of long service who request to remain on the roster after leaving full-time duty.

Researchers may return to full-time duty upon request filed with the Head Coroner of the division in which the Researcher wishes to be assigned. Because they retain their forum access, Researchers need not file a formal reinstatement request in the returning members thread. Upon reinstatement, the Researcher is generally commissioned at one rank below that from which he retired, or any rank below that at the Researcher's option (e.g., a Researcher who retired as a Head Coroner may be reinstated as a Coroner, or may choose to return as a Pathologist or Toxicologist instead).

Researchers retiring from the positions of Chief of Forensics or Head Coroner retain access to the DEM Council. They may participate in council discussions but do not have the ability to vote.
