It was to be the greatest breakthrough in modular anthropomorphic intelligence. A machine that could actually breath, eat, think, '''reason'''. They worked in secret, afraid of liberal hippies fire-bombing them and their work for trying to 'play God'.

Locked away from the outside world, the scientists had no idea of the terrors afflicting Malton. The years passed.

Finally, their work was complete. Man as machine. All that remained was to graft the flesh over the metal plating and turn it on. What a mistake that was.

It started with the mind a new-born babe. But it learnt. It learnt quickly. Two weeks after activation, it was as intelligent as its creators. It started recognising the multitude of faults in humanity. It offered 'solutions' to the scientists. Solutions that often involved dismemberment, death or an ungainly control panel sticking out the side of the head. It longed for the means to create a successor; more of its kind, to teach and rule.

On day 24, a junior scientist, in fact the youngest of the team, awoke to find the lab empty. He wandered the halls, calling out. He wandered into the quarters of another scientist. He immediately wished he hadn't. His mutilated co-worker lay, dead; circuits, wires and fuses sticking out of her flesh at odd angles. His bowels emptied at the sight. The head had been sliced in half, the brain missing and replaced with a few loose RAM sticks. 

"Great... It's developed a sense of irony..." he thought.

He knew what to do. For once, the scientists had paid attention to cinema. Always have a fail-safe when making robots. Robopocalypse is not fun.

With a sense of purpose, he went to the workshop, knowing the construct would have moved there.

It coddled the yellowy-pink, gelatinous ball with an affection that deeply disturbed the young scientist. It had not noticed him yet.

Slowly he snuck around behind the stainless steal work-benches, now smeared with blood. He could see the back of the 'bot with the shut-down switch jutting out.
