I remember when they built this mall. It was so beautiful and clean, with a huge sparkling fountain in the foyer that people would throw their loose change into, like tiny down payments on their dreams. Now we use the fountain as a staging area for corpses, the drain is supposed to keep the blood from pooling until someone has a chance to dump them outside. The drain is slow and the stench is awful.

Strap and I have set ourselves up in an old Cinnabon near the fountain. Strap was a butcher, before, and for a reasonable trade he will remove any body part you want, quick-like. For a substantial trade, he will remove it from someone else, as slow as you please. When Strap is finished working with a “client”, I clean up. “Stitching and ditching”, I call it, since I am usually sewing someone up or dumping their corpse. I spend a lot of time going back and forth to the fountain. I was supposed to be a veterinarian.

Standing by the fountain now, looking at the reflection of myself emptying this dripping sack, I catch myself laughing because I cannot think of anything to wish for.
