If '...' is around text, it shows thought. "..." is speech.
Chapter One
Alarm bells going off and lights flashing. Footsteps and shouting.
'Dammit. You would think the alarm systems would have messed up by now.'
I take a card out of the late Harald von Halzopfel's pocket. It has some cryptic symbols and a set of coordinates scribbled on it.
'Huh. I guess this is it.'
I put the card in my pocket and start to leave the room. Just as I stand up a group of people run in and start screaming something that sounds like an attempt to be offensive in German. They look in my direction and begin to draw weapons. I get behind a desk and wait for the sound of gunshots. Surprisingly enough, there aren't any. It sounds like they are looking for me and didn't see me jump into cover in the dim red light. I see two walk past me and hear another to my right. Deciding that this is as good a time as any to get out, I look right, jump out of cover and plunge my knife into the bodyguards stomach. He screams and the others turn toward us. I run for the door at the same time they begin to fire. Lucky me, only one shot hits. I hear loud shouts and footsteps behind me as I run down the hall. It doesn't sound like they appreciated me killing their boss. Oh well, I have more impotant things to worry about. I find some stairs to the roof. After getting on the roof I lock the door and take a second to bandage my shoulder. I barely manage to get a cloth on the bullet hole when I hear someone beating on the door. I take a run and leap onto the next building just as they come through the door. They follow me, and follow fast considering they still have a buddy with a knife in his gut. We do the routine of jumping from roof to roof for a few blocks before they remember they have guns. I notice a building with a hole in the roof and decide it is time to stop playing games and get them in a place where I have the advantage. Then I hear gunshots. Most of them miss, but one hits me in the middle of my thigh. More reason to finish this.
I hide inside the building with the damaged roof until they get there. The hole is fairly small, so they can only come in one at a time. I get behind some debris and wait on the first guy. Somehow two of them get through at once. They split up and start looking for me. I see the hurt one by himself and rush out and stab him in the neck. Chapter Two
I woke up on a rather uncomfortable gurney. Surrounding me was roughly twelve unfamiliar people (not that I was familiar with many people to begin with). They seemed to be talking about something important but I couldn't tell what. As soon as I moved to listen better one of them noticed me waking up.
"Quiet, guys. He's waking up."
I got up from the gurney and started to back away. A man in a black and white suit with orange shoes looked at me.
"Calm down. We aren't going to hurt you. We already wasted time and resources helping you."
"Why keep me around? You already helped me, you could have just left me where you found me."
"Simple. You looked useful."
I moved my hand to the left side of my chest and felt an unusual flat spot. I must have lost my spare knife somewhere.
"I seemed useful for what?"
"We are the Anti-Zombie Squad, or AZS. You seemed like a capable person who could help us out right now. Im Penguinpyro, by the way."
The group continued introducing themselves until I had met most of them. Penguinpyro, the man in the suit. Dragei, a Scottish fellow. Dr. Freakenstein, their revive specialist. And a few new recruits.
"Well, I guess I can help you. I really had nothing else to do anyway. Um, anybody got a knife I can use?"
Dragei tossed me a small switchblade "Sure, take this one. I don't need it anymore."
"Thanks. I won't let this one get out of my hands."
I went to another room and cut off enough hair that Von Holzapfel's people wouldn't easily recognize me if they came along. I still had mid-neck length hair, but it would have to do.
"So, what do we need to do?"
It took a couple weeks and several demonstration sessions with Penguinpyro for them to start warming up to me. I'm not sure how much they trusted the new guy with knife obsession. Oh well, I was used to working alone anyway.
We were sleeping in an NT building. I was on the third floor, Penguinpyro (or peng, for short) and Dragei were on the fourth floor. Apparently the fourth floor was pretty comforting, because Peng, and Dragei didn't hear me fighting the zombies on floor three.
I was standing in front of the makeshift barricades and watching for movement. I didn't see any so I went to sharpen my knives (I had found more, since Dragei gave me the switchblade). A few minutes after I started sharpening my blades, I heard some noise. It seemed like the wind so I let it go. Then three zombies came up the stairs and ran at me.
The first zombie wasn't a problem, it reached me before the others, and I already had two knives at the ready. So, he was simple, chest stab, let him bite my arm, temple stab. Problem solved. The next two reached at about the same time. Damn my love of knives. If it weren't for that, these two would be dead by now. Oh well, I stab the first one in the stomach, and pull up on the handle. The second one claws my back, its nothing to bad though. The first one backs away from me and swings at my head. He misses and I step forward and try to stab it in the neck. I hit its arm and nearly lose grip on my knife. The second one hits me in the back again, this time bad enough to get me to turn around. I swipe at the second zombies throat and hit it on the right side. I guess that will have to do, it should go down in a minute. I turn around and the first zombie bites shoulder. I try to stab it in the back of the neck, it moves and I hit myself. Oh well. I start to black out, and just before I pass out, I manage to stab it in the heart.
I woke up in a hospital with Dr. Freakenstein. He said he had something to take care of and told me to meet him and the rest of the AZS in a junkyard and gave me the coordinates. I went to the junkyard, and found myself to be the first one there, so I took a real nap, while I waited on everyone else.
I woke up again when several people arrived. It sounded like they were talking about something important. I decided to listen in while I sharpened my knives.
They had decided to meet up at Tompsett Library after they talked about the rather apparent loss at the NT. I decided this was good. They wanted to meet up somewhere later, and I had a friend I needed to talk to.
