- Mike Duffton entered the city as an advance Scout for his squad, who were deployed into the city in hopes of establishing an onsite command center for still-loyal military forces. Unfortunately, they passed over the drop zone he designated because it was 'too cluttered' and landed instead in uncluttered Ridleybank, where the RRF greeted them warmly by munching on their intestines, kidneys, and assorted other organs. Mike (who didn't really like military life, and had only joined to pay for grad school anyhow) took this development as a sign to shed his military trappings and instead set off to explore the city and see if he could find a way out. Setting the border suburb of Owlsleybank as his destination, he began his trek, sleeping alone and avoiding all contact, Human or Zombie.
- He got there, couldn't, and promptly died.
- When he awoke, he found himself lying in the street outside Ackland Mall with blood in his hair and little bits of meat under his fingernails. Thoroughly put out by this turn of events, he managed to climb from a nearby building into the mall, where he did his first bit of post-apocalyptic socializing and learned about the basic tenets of survivor life- shooting zombies, revivification and all that jazz. After spending a few days in the relative comforts of the mall, he set off eastward once again and worked at assisting the survivor presence in the relatively barren west side of Malton.
- After one zombie bite too many, he came down with a nasty headache and a constant sense of distance- Mike's brain had begun rotting due to his constant death and revivification, tying him down to specific Necrotech buildings to stay alive. Tiring of this, he abandoned the fight in the wild wild northwest and set up shop at the Miskatonic University in Arkham, dedicating his time to finishing out his Master's degree in Physics and also using the university's... "extensive" library to research the causes behind the outbreak. Late one night, in a forgotten back corner of the library, he discovered a huge, musty book bound in human skin. It *whispered* to him. Mike began reading...
- ...
- ...and woke up roughly two years later, with some strange phrases in his head and no idea why the hell he was dead, or at the Blackmore Building (although the two are usually related). Feeling that his education was complete for the moment, he's struck back into Malton for no real reason other than to see what cool stuff he can do, and maybe figure out what the hell's up with this human-leather book.
