Sorry for not making a note of it at the time, but I modified the template a few weeks back so that only the five topmost events show up on the main page of the wiki, with a link appearing that directs the reader to come to this page for the rest of the events. It seemed like a good compromise for keeping the data without stretching the front page, and it has the added benefit of directing more people this way, I hope. {{User:Aichon/Signature}} 22:23, 1 October 2012 (BST)

Proof of Concept

User:Bob_Moncrief/Timeline. I moved it to a template for Bob so I could start playing with it. All credit to User:Bob_Moncrief. ~Vsig.png 21:16, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

Content Discussion

So on Vapor's talk page some questions were raised about what content is & should be included in this template. To start with some clarification, information contained within comes from UDWiki:Project Timeline (which contains actual nonfictional information) and User:Bob Moncrief/Timeline (which contains fictional information from the Wiki about pre-2005 events). Because of the nature of much of the fictional information, which mostly mentions years without specific dates, the vast majority of information in this template is post-2005 nonfiction (I believe ~10 total entries are pre-2005).

That said, I would definitely like others to weigh in. Does fictional material have a place on the front page? If so, should it be cordoned off, or kept together with the rest (as now)? And if it should be clarified, how? Thanks! Bob Moncrief 01:14, 29 June 2012 (BST)

It should be stylistically different and clearly marked as fiction. Other than that including it is fine. --Karekmaps 2.0?! 03:37, 29 June 2012 (BST)
I'd suggest that it should be shorter. Right now, it takes up way too much space on the main page. Perhaps only include the fictional material on months that are light for content? Aichon 04:29, 23 July 2012 (BST)
That's because July is a popular month in UD history. July has by far the most notable events. Twice as many as August and thrice as many as Februrary. ~Vsig.png 05:27, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
Maybe trim it back anyway then? What shows up on the front page does not need to be a comprehensive list, after all. It's pushing the most important part of the main page "under the fold" for most people. Aichon 16:50, 23 July 2012 (BST)
If by most important part you mean {{Navigation}}, then perhaps it should appear above the community portal on the main page. As for content, there may be some events of little notariaty that could be removed. I haven't checked every month, but I know that Project Timeline needs to be purged of some of its less notable events and Bob partially aggregated the events on this template from the timeline. ~Vsig.png 22:29, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
Moving that up would fix the issue, I think. Good idea. After that, who cares how far the other stuff stretches, after all? Aichon 00:38, 29 July 2012 (BST)
I've created a continuation of this discussion on the Main Page talk, since that's what would be affected by the swap. (Of which I'm definitely in favor.) Bob Moncrief EBDW! 01:32, 29 July 2012 (BST)
