The outer cover of the journal is stained in bloody handprints. Upon opening the book, you see that the inner pages are bloodstained as well. The blood has coagulated, and several pages are stuck together. You note on the front the words "Combat Medical Technician Hunter Grafsburg, Royal Medical Corps."

Contained in the front cover of the journal is a photograph that appears to be a little worn, but is obviously a picture of the owner. [1]

Rumors are going around at the base that High Command is gonna send in more troops to Malton. Everyone's heard of Malton, so I don't really need to explain it. As soon as I'd heard it, I was excited and afraid at the same time. I'd always wanted to see some action, but I'd also heard about what was going on in Malton. Horrible stories.

I'm wondering why it took them so long. The Americans were there before we were, it seems. Hell, I could probably find people from the Bundy if I looked hard enough. Always heard those blokes from the German Army were tough. It'd be a good opportunity to find out.

It had to be us. Couldn't be some other unit. Nope, it just had to be us. My company, C Squadron of the 107th Medical Regiment, would be sent in as a sort of... "M.A.S.H." unit, I guess you'd call it. Oh boy. Well, at least we shouldn't be too close to the fighting.

We've come up to the Quarantine Zone today. It looks like the gates of Hell, ready to swallow us and rip us to shreds. I talked with the guys in my Squadron for a bit. Most of them are eager to get in there, but a couple are nervous. One man was even hysterical, saying it was the end of the world. Must be a religious fanatic or something. I mean, I'm a faithful man myself, but he was just taking it too far.

February 17th, 2007

7:00 P.M. I arrived today into the Quarantine Zone. It wasn't exactly what I expected. I'd been told that it would be chaotic, constant fighting and carnage all around. But it wasn't, it was as quiet. Quiet as death. The moon could barely be seen past the smog in the sky. No, it wasn't what I expected. It was worse...

8:30 P.M. We were dropped off at St. Columbanus's Hospital, and given our mission objectives. As ordered, we were to set up field operations and treat any military personnel and civilians who happened to pass through. Unfortunately, we were underequipped and unprepared for the massive number of people who needed medical attention. Since I was one of the Squadron's vets, I set off to find supplies with a young Corporal named Ingram.

February 18th, 2007

6:00 A.M. Ingram and I were forced to take refuge in an alley after we encountered a small group of zombies. We tried to find a safe building, but fatigue forced me to sleep on the street. I thank God that I woke up this morning, because it would have taken one of them to wander by and kill me. When we tried to find our way back to the hospital, I realized that we were lost. Going back would do us no good, so we continued north, hoping to eventually hit Huntley Heights.

12:00 P.M. I've been hearing the moans of the dead and dying for hours now, and it's beginning to get the best of me. About two hours ago I came across the Challenger Library, and I encountered a few survivors. I've decided that, if I am unable to find shelter farther north, I'll return here and lie low for a few days. I wish I had my smokes, but they were taken away when we got here. Heh... Everyone thinks just because I'm a medic I'm a health nut. Well they're wrong.

3:00 P.M. I've lost Ingram. He said he had to take a piss, and went inside a flat for about three minutes. While I waited, a group of undead came upon me and I was forced to run. I hope Ingram's alright... He had a family in Manchester, I was told. I'm keeping a positive outlook, though. He was a smart kid, and I'm pretty sure he'll find his way to safety... I hope.

February 20th, 2007

6:00 A.M. All I can hear is them scratching at the barricades. I've been staying at Challenger Library for two days, reading books and conversing with other survivors. But the dead have found us, and they're trying to get in now. My handgun is spent, I used it to take down a zombie on my way here. I don't know if I'll survive, but if you find this diary, chances are I'm one of them now.

4:00 P.M. They broke through, around two o'clock. I managed to get out a back window, but as I ran I heard the screams of the other survivors. I don't know who else escaped, but may God watch over the souls of those who didn't.

February 21st, 2007

8:00 A.M. After a day of some hard running, I've come to my current haven, Dunstan General Hospital. Unlike St. Columbanus's, it's reasonably populated by several other survivors, and across the street there is the Orders Crescent Police Station, which currently is inaccessible to me. I took up residence in one of the rooms upstairs, and spend most of my day reading and searching for medical supplies.

5:00 P.M. I've finally found an entrance to the police station across the street, and I spent my time there searching for ammunition and other supplies. The expedition was very successful. I found an extra handgun, a shotgun, two shells, and plenty of spare clips. This structure, too, is very heavily populated by survivors. Deciding that it would be better for me to remain in the hospital, after I was finished I returned.

February 22nd, 2007

10:00 P.M. I was getting restless, so I decided to wander back over to the police station and stock up on ammunition. However, the people inside have barricaded it even more, and it's impossible to get in. There was a lone zombie, and I tried to kill it. However, the horrors of Malton have scarred me, and my hands shake so bad that I could barely aim. I hit the zombie a couple of times, but I was unable to kill it. I retreated back inside the hospital and spent the rest of my day searching for more medical supplies. I found enough to make two more medical kits. Since I've come up with quite a few medical kits, I have set up an operating room in the breakroom where I am staying. For tonight, however, I'm too tired to do anything. I'll have to help others tomorrow.

February 26th, 2007

3:00 P.M. I spent most of my weekend inside the Dunstan's General Hospital, sleeping more than anything. When I woke up at around ten o'clock, the hospital was all but abandoned. I left, and found the streets swimming with the dead and undead. Running south, I found a lone haven. Rawkins Row Police Department was not only far from the horde laying waste to Raines Hills, but it was completely abandoned. I remained here for most of the night and through the morning. When I woke, a couple of people had joined me. I've decided to stay here for the night and if anything comes up, I'll be quick to leave.

February 28th, 2007

5:00 P.M. A couple more people have somehow managed to slip past the barricades. God knows how. One survivor came in, torn all to Hell. He was infected as well. I had more than enough medical supplies, however, to treat the wounds he was suffering from, as well as snuffing out the infection. Earlier, I searched the station and came up with some more pistol ammo and shotgun shells, plus a brand new flak vest. Should come in handy if I find myself in a fight.

6:00 P.M. I started talking to a cop who had somehow got inside the building today. Seemed to be an interesting guy. I heard that he had a family, and that he was looking for them in this Hellhole. I feel sorry for the guy. I hope that he finds his family...

9:00 P.M. I did a check of my medical supplies. They're dangerously low, and I'm afraid that sometime in the very near future I'm going to have to leave the station and head for the St. Seraphim Hospital, two blocks to the north. I don't know the situation nor the present state of the hospital, but having to leave the safety of the police station isn't very appealing. I'm going to try and persuade some of my fellow survivors to either accompany me to the hospital, or perhaps clear the barricades when I get back.

March 2nd, 2007

10:00 P.M. Had to leave Rawkins Row and head north two blocks, towards St. Seraphims. The place reeked of zombies, but I maneuvered past them and collected some supplies. Mostly morphine, some antiseptic, a stuture kit, and a hemostat. After that, I left the hospital and ran south as fast as I could, coming to another police station, Cotterrell Crescent. There were zombies inside, but the survivors who barricaded themselves in killed them and threw their bodies out. I'm lucky I made it in when I did. I'm sure though, that my medical abilities will be appreciated here. God I could use a cigarette.

March 5th, 2007

6:30 P.M. So... I'm back where it all began, St. Columbanus Hospital. Kinda like a homecoming, I guess you'd say. I regrouped with my squad and even found Ingram safe and sound. There were people who needed to be taken care of, and so I did my duty. The citizens are grateful, and for that I'm very happy. My spirits are high for the first time in a month. Not only that, but I'm getting used to the place. My hands don't shake as often now, and I think I might even be able to shoot a gun effectively. Plus, there's at least some more good news for me to report. I found a pack of cigarettes inside the Nurse's Lounge. Hooray for me.

March 10th, 2007

11:00 P.M. I had taken refuge in an abandoned office building yesterday, because I assumed that it would be a lot safer if I stayed somewhat isolated. I was mostly right. However, I woke up earlier today to find that someone had joined me. If you asked me, he looked kind of crazy. I've decided to keep a VERY close eye on him, and if he tries anything, I'll put a plug in his head and toss his corpse out the window. Heh... Listen to me... I'm talking about killing another human being. Normally, I'd feel bad... But this guy. Well, it seems like he'd do the same to me without much thought.

March 20th, 2007

2:00 P.M. It's been a while since I've written in my journal. Turns out, I lost the damn thing inside the hospital. My medical skills are getting better from my time tending to the sick and wounded. If I ever escape I could probably become a certified Surgeon or something. Gang violence is rising here in Santlerville, and it seems to me that even the undead are trying to get the hell out of here before they get caught in the crossfire. Two groups, the Angels of Mercy and the Dribbling Beavers, are out for each others blood. The Angels of Mercy are well known for murdering innocents, and the Dribbling Beavers seem to be the opposite. They try to help people. For the time being I am going to remain neutral and just heal whoever needs it. Won't stop me from killing zombies, though.

May 28th, 2007

11:00 P.M. It's been nearly two months since I've written in this diary. I've been carrying it with me, but the recent chaos has kept me occupied. Well, finally I've got time to continue my story. A lot has happened, so I'll be brief. Santlerville is not as safe as it used to be. A massive zombie horde has besieged the neighborhood, attacking Dowdney Mall and the outlying buildings. After a month of hard fighting, they gave up on that and instead turned on the Hall Building a bit to the north. But they're being repelled there as well. Which is great news in the least. Nearly everyone is celebrating our victory. Because that means that if we can hold Santlerville, we can hold the rest of Malton. And then we can all go home. A bit too optimistic but hey, it's all we've got for now.

The reader notices that several pages of the diary are stuck together from bloodstains. Perhaps they will become unstuck with time.

About Hunter Grafsburg

Started playing Urban Dead around December of 2006, and got hooked onto it from there. Played more or less a few times a week until about May of this year. After the Battle of Santlerville, I found myself bored with the peaceful life and moved out of Santlerville, but now I'm more or less back.

I pride myself with being Malton's only "Greatcoater", a less-cliched variant of a "Trenchcoater".
