This beautiful old church was erected in 1766, replacing a lunatic-asylum which was destroyed in an arson attack.

One of the distinctive features of the church is its dark, gothic interior. Both imported Hungarian black-stone, and local limestone were used in its construction. As well as illegally-imported Burmese teak wood flooring that, sadly, remains hidden beneath masses of dried zombie excrement.

The impressive stained glass windows are steeped in history too, for they were donated by parishioners in memory of relatives who had perished in the fire. However, much of the glass-work depicts scenes of torture, torment and suffering, reminiscent of early Hogarth etchings.

The building was financed by a local criminal, and was subsequently seen as more of a den of iniquity than a place of worship. Construction was completed in an astonishing sixteen months and, in 1770, St Perpetua’s was dedicated by Archbishop “Dagger John” Hughes. So great was the crowd at the opening that some of the surrounding walls collapsed from the weight of onlookers; resulting in the extremely painful deaths of nineteen children.

The church's cool, simple interior contains many fascinating memorial tablets to some of Matlon's earliest settlers, as well as present day zombie-bone memorials to some of Matlon's illustrious and much loved residents.
