Description
Fleming Library is an old public library located in the suburb of Dulston on the border with Rhodenbank. The library is one of the oldest public libraries in Malton and was named after eccentric bibliophile/philanthropist Eugene P. Fleming. The Fleming Library was established in 1912 thanks to a generous donation from Fleming, but the library was first opened to the public in 1916. One of the reasons for the delay was that Fleming insisted on personally overseeing the selection of each book added to the library's collection, in some cases reading the entire book before he pronounced it "worthy". Books that did not meet his standards were returned to wherever it was purchased or to whoever had donated it. While distressed with the delays city officials remained silent in light of Fleming's considerable donations, without which there would be no library in the first place.
In the months following the public opening of the library it soon became painfully obvious to library staff and visitors alike that something was inherently wrong with the building's design. In many cases people would become lost while wandering among the confusing maze of bookshelves, or climb a staircase to reach an upper floor only to find it led nowhere, or open doors that opened to reveal only brick walls.
City officials, concerned with the bad publicity these reports generated, contacted the building contractor involved with constructing the Fleming Library. It was not far into the investigation that the contractor finally confessed that he unwillingly made alterations to the library's original blueprints at Fleming's behest. Outraged that their authority had been circumvented the city officials visited Fleming's estate in order to confront him and demand answers. Most of the details surrounding this meeting were never revealed, but rumors surrounding it claim that city councilors departed with the strong impression that Fleming was not so much "eccentric" as he was "insane". Apparently Fleming, who had been perched on the edge of a chair throughout the discussion, had explained the library had been constructed in such a manner as to trap and confuse spirits who might try to steal his books, as the library was built upon an ancient Indian graveyard. Facts later proved there was no such graveyard, but by then it hardly mattered.
In the end, as is often the case, money solved the problem. Not that any of it actually reached the library to address its architectural issues. As such, to this day visitors to the library are known to often become disoriented and lost within the book stacks, sometimes emerging hours later.
Barricade Policy
This building must never be more than Very Strongly (VS+2) barricaded. This barricade level has been set forth in the Dulston Optimal Defense Diagram, a strategic barricade policy that is enforced by all member groups of the Dulston Alliance. This building's purpose is to serve as an access point for all survivors and a safehouse for inexperienced survivors who do not possess the Free Running skill. Visitors are requested to never barricade beyond Very Strongly unless the building is currently under siege from 5 or more zombies. Note that any survivors associated with the Dulston Alliance have the right to lower the barricades back to Very Strongly if they discover them raised higher without just cause.
Current Events
October 8th, 2008 - Bounty Hunters Unltd. reported that the library was overrun, with casualties from said group now shuffling off to Duport Avenue.
September 23rd, 2008 - Dead vs Blue recon reported that Fleming Library was barricaded and in survivor hands for the time being.
May 31st, 2016: The building's abandoned. No survivors or zeds. But it would be damn difficult to set up as a base. Nothing valuable, just books. Moving onto Club Dowell. Time to fight for my right to party. --Razer Cain
