Malton chronicle.jpg This story is part of the Malton Chronicles.
This story is fan-made, and is not officially part of any background history for Urban Dead.

NOTE: There is some humor in this, and yes, it is intended. Penguins. Yes. I foreshadow penguins in your future.

After a Death

Tripp Redfield sat there asleep, slouched in the corner of The Rayfield Building in Tollyton, the home suburb to him and Johnny Naylz. Everyone from the group of people led by Requiem were residing in Tollyton, but most were unknown of their whereabouts. It was generally silenced in the building. There was no generator, no people, and the only thing you heard was the occasional groan or the gunshots and footsteps outside of the doorway.

Tripp finally awoke. He stood up, stretched, and took his few pistol clips he had left and put them in his bag. He was going to continue his search for at least one more member of the group. After climbing over the barricades, and walking past Lake Street Fire Department, he saw a four story building... with lights. He ran swiftly, even though there was no enemy in site, he ran like he was about to die. But the barricade was too high up. He couldn't squeeze through. Thinking... he looked west and saw Marcus General Hospital... full of zombies... but open with a rooftop that extended out to Bawden Towers, the four story building. He ran fast, shooting a zombie or so just to slow them down. He ran up stairs, and eventually found an exit to the top. "Oh god... this is a long jump..." he thought. But it was his only way of surviving, and getting into an inhabited building. Taking a breath, the ex military man stepped back, and jumped off the ledge. It seemed way too far away while he was in the air... but the longer he was in the air, the closer it felt. Then he saw a window, with a large grate up under it, where he was about to fall into. He hit the side of the building, holding on. But the grate was right up under him. He couldn't tell if it was gonna fall through if he fell on it or it would hold, and he could go in. His sweaty palms were about to decide for him. He fell, hit the grate, and broke the window. "What the hell was that..." a loud, stern voice said from above. Tripp laid there, dizzy and disoriented. He saw a silver flash, and saw a watch. Then a familiar voice from farther behind came, a soothing voice. It was Dr. Bowman. She came over, pushing the man out of the way. "He's cut up... bad... Johnny, go get me some first aid kits from Marcus across the street." "Okay. I'm going to leave some stuff here, I can hop to the next roof easier." Johnny Naylz said. Tripp couldn't speak, but he thought to himself "This is where everyone's been... in Bawden Towers...". He passed out.

The sound of a radio was all that could be heard. A smooth, crisp sound of feedback coming from an old battered radio transmitter. "How long has he been up?" Naylz asked Dr. Bowman. "About an hour, but leave him alone, he lost alot of blood, and we still can't tell if it was an infectious bite from a zombie that did it or it was just the glass that got him when he fell in." She replied. A syringe sat on the counter in case Tripp was infected, and he would turn into one.

"Hey everyone... how'd you get here?" said a voice, coming down the stairs in a slow, slightly funny manner. "You shouldn't be moving around this much..." Dr. Bowman said slowly. "I'm fine. Now what's gone on here? I've been in Rayfield all this time and you all have just been a block awa -" Naylz interrupted. "We think... this needs to be the new headquarters. I know this part of the city well, and you should too. After all, we were raised here you know... and plus my father worked here all the time, so this place seems a little like home." Redfield had totally forgot about his childhood. After everything going on, he didn't have much time to think about anything else. "Is everyone here?" Tripp asked. "Everyone who carried a radio." The same stern voice from earlier said. It was Oblivion, back and ready to kill. As usual. He was excellent with tech stuff. He was always fixing radios, doing things with the NecroNet access panels and such. Tripp ran back upstairs, grabbed his clothes, weapons, and radio and went back downstairs. "You know..." he started to say, "if we're gonna work as a group... we'll need a name...". On everyone's mind, it was Requiem's last words. About a phoenix, rising from ash. They were a division of their own. They were The Phoenix Division.

Finding Survivors

The next couple of days were spent searching for leftover people. No one. Naylz ventured up north to Woodroffe Mall and found 200 survivors, already in groups. But a least everyone knew where to find us if someone needed help. Only a few people weren't working with others as a group, but there's always some that will turn up looking to work with some guys. Wasn't doing too well for us. The cold December came... along with a secret.

A Dead History

A penguin tripped out on NecroTech syringes conspiring a plot against humanity with Frosty the Snowman.

There was an underground research facility under Rayfield that to this day had not been re-entered since the breakout. There were tests going on there, a new virus treatment. Well. The only mammal that could be purposely exposed to the virus and obtain it was penguins. The underground facility was a freezer, pretty much consisted of penguins sliding around. Well, to test these anti-virus injections, penguins were supposedly able to be tested easily. After about a year of exposure, they observed the virus that could potentially harm humanity... greatly... and tried to put a stop to it with syringes. The penguins seemed to grow more vicious. They developed claws, sharp teeth, and the ability to communicate and group with other... undead... penguins. They got out in the Rayfield Building, and two men were bitten trying to get the penguins under control. Not even the people who were bitten suspected that they penguins were infected... actually, people were trying to figure out what penguins were doing in Malton. Eventually, these penguins got into the sewers, and infected the water. The whereabouts of these penguins are unknown today, but the infected water caused many to get sick, spreading a vicious virus. The human body eventually become immune to the virus from the water... but if exposed to the blood stream it is deadly.

Papers

As Dr. Bowman shuffled through some papers in Rayfield, she found a strange document... talking about penguins. She discovered what was going on and told the group. They had never seen penguins. But how could something so cute and cool... be so deadly? You can compare the effects of the penguin's transformation to the human transformation. It all made sense. And there's no way no one can completely heal the problem. And no one is allowed to leave the city in case the virus is accidentally spread outside. So all humans have to wait until a permanent cure is found. Until then, they are in this city. But why would a company want to investigate a virus such as this? The virus was native to certain agricultural parts of the world and is a combination of a new genetically modified plant and animal waste. The virus was deadly, but it turns out that it could be easily contained and cured. But if let to spread throughout a body, like it was to the penguins for about a year, it can become permanent, and spread twice as easy and harder to get rid of.

Malton was turning into a city of evil.
