Description

Horder Avenue School was the only school located in the suburb of Rolt Heights. The fact that it was closed down in 1972 may also go a lot towards explaining why the suburb has no local hi-tech industries, especially those belonging to the NecroTech corporation. Originally known as the "The Pickman School of Arts", the school later became known simply as The Horder, although no one knew or was willing to discuss the origin of the nickname. The school started its life in 1929 as an independent school for boys and was founded by the locally famous artist, Richard Upton Pickman, who had the goal of educating local boys in the fine arts. Pickman was best known for a series of somewhat macabre portraits he painted... paintings that had a certain "ghoulish" quality to them.

"The Ghoul", a portrait painted by Richard Upton Pickman that can still be found hanging in the school's main hall.

At the time parents were pleased that their children, if only the boys, had a place to develop their minds. In the years that followed a dark cloud seemed to hang over the school as every year at least one boy managed to disappear from the suburb. It was not until 1934, that police managed to connect the school with the string of abductions and while Pickman was never found the school was finally shutdown. In a shocking turn of events the bones of over a dozen children were found in the school's furnace room... with forensics pointing to the fact that the bones had been gnawed by human teeth. Parents of the missing children were horrified and outraged, blaming the local police force for never finding the man the accused of not only murdering, but devouring, their children.

In 1938 the school was reopened as Horder Avenue School, a public school, in an effort to distance itself from its grim past. The school continued to have an unassuming history until 1994, when students once again started disappearing. The police investigated the matter and again bones of six children were found in the school's basement. Not to let the same crime go unpunished the police continued to investigate until in 1996 a startling discovery was made. While reviewing the school's blueprints the police noted a discrepancy in the overall design of the basement. On further investigation they discovered a hidden passage that led them underground several block west to a cemetery. It was later learned that the tomb where the passage exited was owned by none other than Richard Upton Pickman, although the casket found there was empty. The passage was later sealed with cement, but the unsolved crime forced the school to close its doors once again, and that is how it was when the "Malton Incident" tore through the city.

Barricade Policy

This building should be Very Strongly (VS+2) barricaded at all times. This is in accordance with the mutually supported Rolt Heights Barricade Plan set forth in agreement with local survivor groups. This building is meant to serve as a shelter for Malton's inexperienced survivors and an entry point into the more fortified buildings around it.

It should be noted that as no specific survivor group monitors nor maintains the barricades associated with this barricade plan, so therefore it is not considered to be enforced. As such, survivors should always expect to find the barricades set at varying levels depending on the survivors inside the building. For the most part though, survivors should always expect to find this building over-barricaded rather than under-barricaded simply due to survivor nature.
