Basic Info:

  • A monument is a city block containing a statue or similar piece of public art, without a building in it. It is functionally equivalent to a street, except that players with the Tagging skill can gain 2 XP for writing graffiti on a monument.
  • This is, game-play wise, an empty block, and cannot be barricaded.
  • After the July 3, 2009 update, some monuments became tall and can be seen from a distance with binoculars

The Lane Monument

Description

You are at the Lane Monument, a fountain on a plinth.

The wreckage of a brass, Victorian looking machine stands next to the still fountain, pieces of twisted metal scattered across the broken floor. The strange mechanical contraption clearly fell from the sky, impacting the ground with considerable force - enough to shatter the stone paving. Upon further inspection the use of the machine is unclear - several levers stick out at varying angles, pointing near enough towards the central seat contained with the machine. It looks like something that should be ridden by a single pilot. A cracked dial is visible, the needle stuck at the extreme end of the scale.

History

The Lane Monument Fountain was built at the same time as renovation was carried out on the Estmond Museum just east of it, in a bid to boost the image of the surrounding area as part of a localised urban-renewal scheme. A modest creation, the fountain nevertheless served its purpose, improving the image of the immediate area and attracting more visitors to the museum.

A few years into the outbreak there was a great flash of light in the sky over the square in which the monument stands, and a strange mechanical contraption was seen by multiple survivors hurtling towards the ground. It crashed next to the plinth on which the fountain stands with a considerable sound, attracting zombies and survivors alike. Hoping to find a supply crate, survivors were dissapointed to find the unidentified wreckage instead, empty of whoever was piloting it. As no one knows what the Victorian-like machine is supposed to be, it cannot be fixed by the survivors into a useful state.
