Description

Hains Street is a minor thoroughfare in Gatcombeton offering access to Calvert Mall and the Challes Museum of Cubist Sculpture. It also has access to the parking lot for Don Cinema. Hains Street intersects with Clinton Way to the east.

History

Hains Street was developed during the suburb's early expansion as a commercial corridor linking Gatcombeton with Quarlesbank to the north. It was named for Eustace Hains, a local who had risen to the rank of Colonel in the Second Boer War. As part of a major civics project in the 1970s, its northern stretch was sold by city authorities to developers to comprise part of Calvert Mall. An extension of Hains Street was built to connect it to Clinton Way to facilitate traffic through the area.

Hains Street is known primarily for the 1966 Hains Street Flood, during which heavy rains and a broken water main submerged the street under nearly a meter of water. There were no fatalities, but damages were estimated to exceed £200,000.

Barricade Policy

As an empty block, Hains Street cannot be barricaded.
