Pope Symmachus was the Pope of the Holy Roman Catholic Church between the years of 498 and 514 AD. He was born a pagan but converted to Catholicism as a young adult. 
He was later baptized in Rome where he became an Archdeacon and eventually Pope. He was praised for providing aid in the form of currency and clothing to missionaries
in Northern Africa. Pope Symmachus died broke and naked on the steps of the Vatican, where he was stoned to death with gold and silver denarii late in the year 514 for
alleged extortion and bribery.
Prior to the outbreak in Malton, parishioners of St. Symmachus's Church would annually strip naked and attend a sermon where they would toss handfuls of pocket change
at the priest, doing this in the Saint's honor. Rumor has it that several stark naked survivors, clutching fistfuls of Pounds and Euros, have been seen in and around
the church during the weeks honoring the feast of this Saint.
