UDWiki:Open Discussion/Page ownership and copyrights

From The Urban Dead Wiki
Jump to navigationJump to search

The aim of this discussion is to achieve consensus on the subject of ownership of user-submitted content. The trigger for this discussion was the recent deletions of user pages and current misconduct case.

UDWiki:Copyrights currently states that:

All content on the Urban Dead wiki is owned by the individual user who created it, and may not be reproduced without their express permission.

The Urban Dead Wiki prohibits the usage of copyrighted material in anyway way shape or form without the express consent of the original owner of such material. This includes the usage of logos and other forms of intellectual property.

UDWiki:Copyrights

This could be interpreted to mean that a user could demand that all content which they have submitted be removed from the site, which would obviously have a negative impact on a number of pages if the user was a frequent contributor. Wikipedia deals with this problem by stating that by contributing you are licensing your content under the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License (CC-BY-SA) and the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). As we don't have a requirement for content to be reproducible elsewhere, I would suggest a statement something along the lines of:

If you contribute text directly to Wikipedia then you grant The Urban Dead Wiki a royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive right and license to use, reproduce, edit, modify, adapt, publish and display the submitted content (in whole or in part) worldwide for the full term of any rights that may exist in the content.
