Description

Christopher lane is a minor thoroughfare in Nixbank, branching off from Sugar Boulevard and curling west around Galpin Towers to terminate as a dead end against wasteland to the north. It provides access to the Lord Museum of Contemporary Art and the Hellard Monument.

History

The construction of Galpin Towers in 1968 resulted in increased traffic to this area of Nixbank. In an effort to reduce congestion and increase access to local attractions such as the Hellard Monument and the Lord Museum of Contemporary Art, the Malton City Council approved plans to bulldoze the decrepit original building of the Carder Row School, which was already scheduled to move into a new structure. This land would be used to construct a thoroughfare connecting Sugar Boulevard to Heale Drive.

The initial leg was completed in 1969 and was named for Lane Christopher, a local theater actor who had been instrumental in the public campaign to promote this project. However, Christopher's death that year, combined with the Galpin corruption scandal and a minor recession, put the project on indefinite hold. The land slated for completion of the project remains undeveloped.
