Recently released NecroTech internal memos indicate that in the months leading up to the outbreak, NecroTech suffered no less than a dozen break-ins at their facilities across the city. Immediately after the first such break in, dark corners of the Internet were flooded with numerous documents and pictures. While rumor and speculation had always surrounded the corporation, especially given its secretive approach to discussing its more dangerous projects, these events merely served as fuel for the fire, and those recesses of the Internet quickly ignited with ideas regarding what might be taking place behind the closed doors.
Based on our sources, shortly after the leaked images hit the 'net, a group of conspiracy theorists held their first meeting in the railway tunnels under Malton. While some felt that any attempts to garner additional information would be futile, and urged the others to merely prepare for the worst, another group was more militant, proposing that direct confrontation take place. This latter group is thought to be responsible for the majority of the break-ins in the months prior to the outbreak, though the extent of their activity is not entirely known. Additionally, the party responsible for the initial leak has yet to be identified.
Regarding the former group of theorists, sources indicate that they are responsible for the closure of the railway system immediately after the outbreak was first identified. As we are aware, the railway system running under the city inexplicably shut down on the day of the outbreak, and is largely credited as being a miracle that kept the outbreak from spreading beyond the confines of the city. In fact, our sources indicate that it was these theorists who, knowing such a thing might happen, chose to sacrifice themselves in order to ensure that the virus was contained. Even today, the railway system remains a mess of ruined structures and impenetrable barricades, hence why neither the survivors nor the zombies are capable of using it to traverse the city.
