ForerunnersThe MLEA can trace its beginnings back to the early 1850s, where each month, five of Malton's Gentry had to donate a set amount of money to the Lord Mayor for the running of the Malton schools. The schools themselves were very mismatched affairs, with classes held in a library one week, and in a pub the next. The Elevenstools School held the record with classes held in over 500 different locations! Thanks to the unfairness and bias of the system many of the disgruntled Gentry began to blackmail and bribe a few city counsellors so that they didn't have to 'donate' for a year or two. Rumours also circulated Malton in late 1852 that a West Grayside counsellor was assasinated by an unknown 'Mr Smith.' Although bones thought to be the councillor were recovered, they were destroyed in an accident before carbon dating could be scheduled. Malton School BoardLuckily for the Gentry, the Government's 1870 Elementary Education Act introduced a Malton School Board with the first permanent school buildings built - though mainly around the Vinetown area. Malton Local Education AuthorityWith the abolishment of the Malton School Board in 1902,thanks to the introduction of the Education Act, the Malton Local Education Authority replaced it. Since then we've gone from strength to strength and as well as running both primary and secondary schools we also run most of Malton's further education. |
