History
The Martland Museum, before the outbreak, was a neatly run museum. The owner, Eli Martland, studied Evolution through college, and was always fascinated by it. He had many exhibits on Evolution, as well as displays of: primitive man, World War I gas masks, medieval suits of armor, and a display on Southern Africa - dealing specifically with Witch Doctors, and their ancient practice of turning people into "Zombies" ("in fact the process had nothing to do with zombies as we have come to know them in modern times. ...as the Witch Doctors made the victim effectively brain dead with their secret powder, and the new "zombie" stumbled around and murmured..." - excerpt taken from the display). In the display was an actual Zombie from the 1800's, made by a witch doctor long ago, and it was well preserved. In the museum, Eli had installed secret departments and doors, because he could not afford to buy a house, as his ambitious work with the museum drew most of his cash flow. Everyone knew that he lived in his museum, just not where!
Eli was running an incredible business and people came by the hundreds to see his fantastic exhibits, until the outbreak began. For Mr. Martland, it started when the zombie on display in the witch doctor exhibit inexplicably came back to (un)life, and attacked the people gathered in the museum that day. The zombie devoured at least three people before the evacuation of the museum's patrons was completed.
Eli was not married, and had no children - all he had was his museum, and he wasn't going to give it up to a little thing like a zombie outbreak. He retrieved a spear from the medieval exhibit and began to fight with the zombie. He stabbed it in the chest, but the zombie pushed itself upon the spear and bit Eli in the shoulder. Eli, acting out of confusion and bewilderment, grabbed a vase and preceded to smash the zombies skull in until it no longer moved. He then picked up the zombie and chucked it outside. The police came later to retrieve the body, and provided a cover story to the media to prevent panic from breaking out in suburb, as the news of the outbreak had begun to do in other parts of Malton. The next day, Eli began to feel sick, woozy, light headed, and began to experience bouts of vomiting.
He began to barricade his museum to keep it safe from looters, after some "idiots" (as he called them) on the local news station reported the outbreak as "The end of the world". He condition worsened the more he moved around, and it got to the point were he couldn't take it anymore. He opened one of the secret departments and sat at his desk, and he wrote a letter - his last will and testament, to whoever found it. After he completed the letter, he pulled a pistol out of his desk, placed the barrel in his mouth, and with his last bit of strength blew a hole about 9 mm out the back of his head!
His Will
Dear the finder of this note,
I am sufferings from a bite of a exotic creature, ans am feeling rather bad. I knew that I am not in best of the mind, but I want do write a will. I leave all my possession to the finder of this will, I hope you feel as strong for as all this historys as I do! Please take care of this buildings and never let fall into the hands of a person who will use this building for nothing good. —Eli Martland
Current Use
- In the first week of January, retreating from the death cultists in Dakerstown, F.R.E.E.Z.E. took control of the building. They found it to be of great historical wealth, and in a prime location next to Garson Towers, in close proximity to valuable resource buildings. The group found the secret room containing the dead corpse of Eli Martland alongside his will, and swore to follow his dying requests.
They have not defiled the museum, expect for adding group related graffiti - which was done in large part to cover an obscene image painted on one of the walls by a random vandal. The building has been retrofited as a barracks of sorts, with beds chained to the walls. The windows are all broken out, and have been barricaded over with wooden planks. The group also discovered Eli's old sleeping quarters behind a display of cavemen attacking a wooly mammoth, and converted it into a war room where they meet to discuss strategy away from the eyes and ears of other survivors who occassionally share the safehouse. Maps of the suburb adorn the walls of the secret room, as do propaganda posters collected from the groups travels across Malton.
Wrappers from the new Mczeds which opened in early March at Esgar Auto Repair share the table with papers containing battle plans and strategies. To honor the memory of the museums former owner, the group made a new display with Eli Martland, still at his desk with the pistol in hand, and his will before him on the table. They took a panel of glass and barricaded off the office with it. In the glass is carved "Here lies Eli, a grand curator of history". It is rumored that some members of F.R.E.E.Z.E. wear the gas masks from the WWI display into battle, to symbolize their agreement with the dead body of Eli.
