Beer.png

Locations: Warehouses; Mall liquor stores; Auto Repair Shops (L2.9%); Pubs; Clubs; Barracks Encumbrance: 2%

Heals 1 HP at the cost of 1 AP. Can only be used on oneself, disappears from one's inventory after a single use, and does not cure infections.

On 28th May 2008, an update allowed the use of a few household items as melee weapon; including the beer bottle. Its base accuracy is 10% (25% with the Hand To Hand Combat skill) and does 3 points of damage (equivalent to a fire axe without the Axe Proficiency skill.) When used in combat, the bottle breaks after a single hit (but not if the bottle misses); disappearing from one's inventory.

Newspaper

Newspaper.png
Locations: Mall bookstores; NecroTech buildings; Pubs; Auto Repair Shops (2.9%/3.3%); Gatehouses
Encumbrance: 2%

Gives a short news story to read, sometimes providing some back story on the city, NecroTech, and the zombie plague. Now they may also contain useful information for the newer inhabitants of Malton. Disappears from one's inventory after a single use and costs 1 AP to use.

Newspapers were the subject of particular loathing from a significant portion of the Urban Dead community due to their lack of practical use, and their habit of being found instead of first aid kits in hospitals.

On January 19th 2007, the following update was posted:

A cold wind sweeps the streets, and post-quarantine newspapers now offer some advice and propaganda to new players, rather than long-forgotten local news.

It is unclear as to how the newspapers have been altered to provide the propaganda as yet, although there is speculation that it is based on the Peer Reviewed Wiki-Based Newspapers suggestion. However, the advice is usually found in pamphlet form, such as the following:

It's an evacuation pamphlet, advising residents of Malton to remain in their homes or find shelter in established safehouses, and to avoid sleeping in empty police stations or other buildings likely to be attacked by looters.
It's a quarantine information pamphlet, explaining that bodies should be carried outside of buildings as soon as possible after death, for both hygiene and safehouse security reasons.

Some newspapers are now propaganda, such as the following:

It's a crudely-printed propaganda rag, encouraging survivors to surrender to the hordes and reclaim Malton, to exist without material needs rather than scavenging to survive.

For a full list of the stories found in newspapers, see News Stories.

The 28th May 2008 update allowed the use of a few household items as weapons; including the newspaper. It has a 100% chance of striking the target (still halved in darkness), making it the most accurate of all weapons in the game. However, it does 0 damage, rendering it useless as a melee weapon. Attacking a human or zombie target with a newspaper will result in the message: You slap (the target) with a newspaper. This is generally intended to be humourous. The attacker gains no experience and spends 1 AP. The newspaper is not lost after use, and can be used to slap one's desired target again. Attacking a portable generator gives the message: You swat at the generator.

In December 2008, newspapers ceased appearing in hospitals.

Poetry Book

Thewasteland.png
Locations: Schools; Malls bookstores; Libraries
Encumbrance: 2%

Gives a short piece of poetry, usually pertaining to apocalypse, death, zombies, etc. often extracted from actual poems. Costs 1 AP to use, but provides no experience.

Stale Candy

Candy.png
Locations: Mall candy stores (100%)
Encumberance: 0%

Stale Candy was added to the game on Halloween (31st of October) 2007, and was obtainable for a short period of time thereafter. It was obtainable again for a short period of time after Halloween 2008. Survivors could give the candy to another survivor or zombie, or, if none were present, eat some themselves (does not remove candy from one's inventory). Despite taking no inventory space, only one lot of candy can be had at one time.

Wine

Locations: Mall liquor stores; Pubs; Clubs; Arms; Churches; Cathedrals; Hotels; Motels
Encumbrance: 4%

Heals 1 HP at the cost of 1 AP. Can only be used on oneself, disappears from one's inventory after a single use, and does not cure infections.

Wirecutters

WireCutters.png
Locations: Fire Stations; Mall hardware stores; Junkyards; Storehouses; Vehicle Depots; Power Stations (2.9%/3.6%)
Encumbrance: 4%

Formerly used to cut through wire fences, padlocks and chains on some buildings (warehouses, junkyards, power stations, etc). Since the effect is currently permanent and irreversible and all "cuttable" barriers have been cut, wirecutters are currently useless.

Since about the second week of September 2007, wirecutters are no longer obtainable.
