"The Great Fire of Malton, 1912"
Eyewitness reports claim to have seen the flames literally bounce back from the walls. In the chaos of that night, with all the noise and fear and panic everywhere, and everyone huddling together in the main ward on the ground floor... no one thought twice about the screaming. It was only weeks later that rumors began to circulate of a terrible laughter coming from the lower levels of the building that night, and of the disappearance of 12 schoolchildren bought in from Pridmore Way. Official reports say that they died in the fire: but a hospital record discovered in the basement in 1920 confirms that the youngsters were in fact put in Children's Ward B and "treated for shock and minor burns." --Zann 07:20, 21 April 2008 (BST)
