Water sloshes up through a locked metal grate barring a wide opening in the floor. A current flows... and carrying with it the intense smell of wet wood.
A few criss-crossing bars, misaligned or bent maybe, permit a larger gap. Not large enough to fit through. Yet an object, once carried by the current, has gotten snagged at that gap.
