Description
KTFE is a short woman, about 5'2", and by virtue of sparse life in Malton, sickly skinny as well, with a face that's been lined by scars and troubles. She's all skin, bone and muscle, now, wiry and toned and carefully maintained. Wary, pale brown eyes are set in a roundish, ruddy-skinned face, and framed by shoulder-length auburn hair that is, more often than not, downright ratty.
Kay's entire wardrobe has been riddled with telltale stains and tears and bullet-holes, despite efforts to patch it up. Though everything is slightly too large for her petite body, her partner Agate has hemmed her pants so they don't drag on the ground or catch on things. She wears a sturdy pair of jeans, though by now they are so crusted with filth and patched and re-patched that it's hard to tell, topped by a grey long-sleeved shirt of nondescript fabric, and a heavy-duty black hoodie with red stitching that looks as if it should be worn by someone half her age and covered in black makeup. For outside adventures, Kay has a filthy, used-to-be-tan coat with a fur-lined hood and extra-insulated cuffs and zipper -- warm, more comfortable than a lot of things, and falls all the way to her shins. She's covered in weapons under that coat; pistols, shotguns, blades.
Personality
Over the years Kay has become a bear. She is taciturn, fierce, and easy to provoke; she can be harsh and downright mean, and she draws a hard line between the people she loves and everybody else. Malton is, after all, a city of disposable people.
She is not motherly, but she undeniably benefits from being a mother. Casey gives her purpose and a focus and though she leaves much of the practical parenting to Agate and Fa she loves the little girl with everything in her. There was a period of time while she was pregnant and for a time thereafter that Casey had been a touchpoint for a large, family-like group of others, too, and that had lent further stability -- rendering it all the more painful when the majority of them dissipated before Casey was a year old. She credits the people who had gathered in the Cosway with making certain her daughter to make it from conception to birth, but the loss of that support system hardened her in a bad way.
Like anyone else, however, she is a different person around her small family. With Casey she tries hard to curb her temper and her tendency to assume the worst about people, though she has always struggled with having the kind of patience necessary to put up with the foibles of a toddler. She tries to be a strong role model for the girl growing up in such cruel circumstance, and this does tend to mean she is a little less gentle than she might be. With Agate she is relaxed, sardonic and even tender at times, and with the both of them she laughs more readily than anyone might imagine. Fa she has a complicated relationship with, particularly because Fa comes and goes at times, eternally in search of the people the Cosway has lost over the years. She loves the woman blindly and is endlessly frustrated with her, and relies on Fa for succor in moments of weakness she wouldn't even show to Agate.
Background
Pre-breakout, Kay was a firefighter, and a good one, but otherwise was doing very little with her life. Anything beyond that, she figures is a moot point. Post-breakout, she spent months holed up in a little house hidden in the southern corner of Malton, safe and sound with a great deal of canned and dry food, secure from zombies and trying to wait this whole thing out. That didn't work, and a zed or five ended up breaking in and chasing her off.
She wandered around Malton for a while in what little she could grab on her way out the door, until she most unexpectedly found Agate -- a friend, and a good one, from before. She essentially attached herself him, staying by his side. Fa, her lover from before the outbreak, showed up as well and eventually stayed, completing their current triad. Others came and went, some stayed; at one point she traveled with the group she and Agate seemed to have attracted, but in the end she always ends up back 'home', at the Cosway, and is zealous about the continued defense of this one safe place.
