Sam was born in Pontypandy, Caerphilly in Wales. He had always dreamed of becoming a Fireman like his father but, disgusted with the service during the nationwide strike action in 2003, Sam quit the brigade.

Shortly after leaving the job he loved, Sam was to lose the woman he loved when she asked for seperation. With no home to go to and in desperate need of work, Sam left for Malton, leaving his beloved wife and child behind.

Signing up for the Malton Fire Service, Sam was stationed in Millett Walk fire station in Spracklingbank. When he received the divorce papers from his solicitor, Sam suffered a breakdown and descended into a spiral of depression and anger. He was soon reassigned off active duty and deployed to the local schools to promote fire safety. Sam spent his days, in the weeks before the outbreak, smiling at children who all looked up to him and his uniform that he wore so proudly.

When the zombies attacked, Sam lost all contact with his family back in Pontypandy. Once again he had lost all that he had been living for. His spirit finally broken and mind barely intact, Sam headed for the only place he had left that could be called home. Millett Walk Station. Taking his old uniform down off the peg, and, shaking, pulling an axe from the dead hands of one who used to be a colleague, Sam found a new purpose. Vengeance.

Wandering, lost, around Malton, Sam found refuge with a man named Ace Vengabean, with whom he shared a drink to warm the cold, unforgiving night. It was during this encounter that he learned of a group of survivors. Tough, single minded in their purpose and resolute in their will to protect what and who they can from the scourge. Sam resolved to make for Frossard PD in Lockettside and take their cause as his own.

Sam Pontypandy has never stopped smiling.
