1912 saw much of Malton go up in flames, scorching the earth and reducing the original architecture to ashes and rubble. One of the few buildings left untouched was the newly opened psychiatric hospital known as Emma General. Eyewitness reports claim to have seen the flames literally bounce back from the walls. Many civilians sheltered there that night, huddling together in the main ward on the ground floor, and burn victims were treated. It was only weeks later that rumors began to circulate of a terrible screaming coming from the lower levels of the building that night, and of the disappearance of 12 schoolchildren bought in from Pridmore Way.
