The Neary Family

The Neary family were originally from Ireland. They moved across to the England and settled in Malton in the 1840s from County Tyrone. The family were an unusual family for there was only two children. Marcus Neary moved his family out of Ireland because of the lessening situation at home. His family was descending into poverty. The family's choice of settlement near St. Jude's Cathedral was not just chance. Marcus decided to settle near St. Jude's for the supposed powers of the Saint.

In the one and a half centuries since the family settled they haven't had as great an impact on Malton as some other families, but there has been a bank founded by one of the grandsons of the original settlers, James Neary, and a monument has been erected in North Blyville.

Famous Family Members

James Neary. Had friends abroad who were wanting to invest in Malton's upcoming industries. They heard of no very profitable investments at the time, yet had already committed to the city. Fearing for their safety, and probably more so, their money, in Reganbank with its lack of police stations, they asked James to hold it for them at his location in Warner Boulevard. James felt the power in possesing such money and responsibility, that he decided to found what is now known as Neary Bank.

The monument in North Blyville was a private venture funded by James Neary. He was attempting to franchise his bank into another suburb. The failed result of the bank was eventually bought by an unknown Scottish family, the Bugby Family. The monument has always been owned by Neary Bank.
