If a player is talking or behaving as if they are their character, they are said to be "in character", or roleplaying. If they're talking as themselves, they are Out Of Character.

Some areas of the game's discussion areas out-of-character (which can be regarded as a form of metagaming), while others are entirely in-character. The game itself is obviously in-character, though not everyone behaves this way.

If talking in an otherwise in-character situation but needing to communicate something out of character, players will often prefix such statements with the letters OOC.

Naturally, the opposite of Out Of Character is In Character.
