History
Founded by avant-garde art-lover Oscar de Ment, the museum is sited in what was the founder's home. Once the darling of Malton society, de Ment filled his home with objets d'art and was known as much for his aestheticism as for his sparkling conversation. However, he later began to champion new movements in art, much to the horror of his former patrons. When he began collecting the works of the early Cubists, long before they were celebrated, his former friends deserted him and declared the new forms of art 'demented' - a word which subsequently entered the English language.
De Ment died in his early 40s, a broken man in mind and body, if not in spirit. Although the misspelling of his name lives on as a final insult, his love of Cubism has since been vindicated and he is now recognised as one of the great wits and connoisseurs of his time.
