The hospital is notable as being the first to be evacuated after the infestation and it lay empty for quite a while, overlooked by zombies and survivors alike. It was only after Woodroffe Mall began to attract attention from the zombie hoards that the tactical significance of the hospital was realised: it is the closest hospital to Woodroffe.
As such, St. Joachim's has been staffed by various survivor groups - The [[PDEOU]], the [[Outbreak Control Unit]] and now Tollyton Medicare.

Before the zombie infestation, St. Joachim's served primarily as a maternity hospital. It was founded in the late Victorian era by a pious man whose wife and son had died in childbirth; he named the hospital after the patron saint of fathers. It is a narrow grey-stone building with black crosses painted across its doors. In the post-apocalyptic wasteland that is Malton today, most notable is its location: the closest hospital to Woodroffe Mall.
